Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to a great video about the hidden or secret bedrooms in airplanes. Have never wondered where the pretty flight attendants go to get some rest during a 12 hour flight for example? Or have you spotted those mysterious doors, very often with an electric locking mechanism but no placard letting you know what’s behind that door.
Well behind these doors is a very steep and narrow staircase leading into the crew rest compartment or better know as the bunk. And the come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Don’t expect a large king size bed but a small narrow space with a few cushions, a proper duvet/blanket and a few gadgets such as an oxygen mask, PBE (protective breathing equipment) and flash light. But most importantly the inter phone, with which other colleagues could call you in case of an emergency or wake you up once your rest time is over.
But see more within the video!
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
    Wishing you all the best!
    Your "Captain" Joe

One time I was allowed to sleep on this bed back in 1996 or 1997, due to my heavy motion sickness, flight attendants guided me there. I appreciated the generosity of Singapore Airlines.

I have had the pleasure of a glimpse in to the sleeping quarters several times on different flights. As I have restless legs, I tend to stand at the rear of the plane a lot and get to talking to the crew. You'd be surprised how open they are about their work. So when I asked about their sleeping quarters (I knew the door led to them, but I honestly thought is was below deck...) they showed me the 'upstairs' (as noone was resting at the time). Just check out the last few rows of seats in the middle....some of the overhead lockers don't actually have handles, as they are fake :)

Some first class seats turn into beds, and everything else is better and more comfortable in first class than the pilots or attendants get. May not be in some airlines, but some Arab, some southern Asian, probably a few European airlines have these types of first class.

Third, your comment is one of the most idiocratic statements I've ever seen, and judging by your name... I'm not surprised that 3rd world education produces dumber than rocks idiots like you. I’m an MD. On a trans Atlantic flight i was called to attend to a fellow passenger who went into cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, he died. With this, 3 other passengers and myself pulled his body along the aisle to the front of the plane where we were told by the crew to place him in one of these berths where the crew would normally sleep. (This was on the same floor, directly behind the cockpit.) That is where the body remained for the remainder of the flight until we landed.

On some 767s and all narrowbody planes, longer flights generally will require several revenue seats be used as crew rest. In the case of United's Island Hopper route from Hawaii to Guam, the point A to B duration is 16 hours. Seats 1A & 1B in business/first class are reserved for a second set of pilots and seats 2A & 2B are blocked off to allow the pilots to have a lie-flat recline. Due to the remote locations served, the Island Hopper also has a Boeing 737 mechanic onboard seated in a extra legroom economy seat. As for the smaller wide body planes, several economy class seats are allocated as a FA crew rest & include a privacy curtain, and extra legroom / recline.

I can answer that one. You often have bird handlers with birds of prey around the airports or runways. However, that is not ideal for some airports, and you will have bird scarers, which are like a shot gun sound. You can never 100% stop a bird strike, however, it is very rare at an actual take off and landing. It is more common away from the airport, either coming in to land or after taking off. My source of information, myself. Ex Her Majesty's Royal Air Force operational flying base.

I often fly from Dallas-Ft. Worth to Sydney and this is what I think I remember one of the Qantas flight attendants telling me of their schedule during the 16-17 hour flight: There are usually twice the number of staff on board then there would be on a much shorter flight. All flight attendants are on deck during the first two hours (takeoff phase) and the last two hours (landing phase) of flight. It is interesting to see so many of the flight crew during those times! In between those two phases the first shift will be on deck for the first 6-6.5 hours while the second shift is resting/sleeping, then they switch shifts at the halfway point of the trip.

I recall the room being right at the back, near where we'd have that rising truck with food. With a very narrow steep stairway, the room was more square than what was shown at the end. There was a very low ceiling, maybe 4 maybe 5ft high and 8 beds in a similar arrangement but with much less headroom as they were double /bunk beds. To clean you head to be on all fours.

I am a nurse doing 12 hours shift. I have 1 hour brake. The rest I am on my feet taking care of patients needs. Doing life saving procedures. Giving interveneous medication. Would love a longer brake. Most times I am writing my reports during my brake. Nurses are even on less wages. I think o will become a pilot.

Why don't long haul airlines offer bunks to passengers instead of seats? Not the reclining first class kind, I mean stacked bunks that have the same kind of density as seats in coach. I would much rather lie down for my flight than sit, assuming I have a tablet with stuff to watch/read when not sleeping.

@@sierraromeomike Yea that's what I was thinking. They want us all to be awake and alert during takeoff and landing, with eyes adjusted to outside lighting conditions. But I'm sure the airline that Joe and I are starting can engineer a solution to that ;) Maybe adjust interior lighting to match the outside and have live camera feeds play on all the monitors + a good PA system? The authorities can be convinced. Same thing with space and weight. It should be possible to engineer a comfortable bunk with a footprint similar to a seat in coach. Just look at all the extra space above your head that's unused.

@@p11111 and you must also be able to evacuate the plane in 90 sec . Even with proper lighting would be problematic in that configuration

    • @p11111
      @p11111 5 років тому +3

Sergiu Calancea I still think we can overcome that. With proper communication (monitors, PA) and perhaps having the bunk covers be open for takeoff/landing, I think we can get the plane empty in 90 secs or less. Maybe even have inflatable cushions on the floor so people can jump straight out of their bunk. I totally agree that it's an engineering and logistics challenge, but not impossible!
