I had not seen this episode before, but it's definitely one of my favorites. I laughed hard at the contestant's "No, thank you" response, and the celebrity panelists seemed to be really "on" for the whole episode. Two very likeable contestants too. I wish that the audience had gotten a chance to react to Fannie's "Tee Peeing Bull" answer! (Oh, and Gene's line about the six-pack in his dressing room was great! I don't think a game show host could get away with that line today.)
It occurs to me that someone should write a book about this fabulous game show...how it was created, the backstory, how it worked, the behind the scenes stories of sex and fun.
There are two books I can think of: Match Game 101: A Backstage History of Match Game by A. Ashley Hoff and The Matchless Gene Rayburn. The latter is more about Gene but still. Both are worthy of a mention!
End-of-week H/H match recap: ... Let's begin with today's action: For the second day running, we start right off with the H/H match. (To recap: yesterday a new champion was crowned and for the super match suggestions she picked Richard, Fannie, and Charles and went with Richard's answer to win $500 in the audience match just as time ran out.) And for the 19th of the past 20 times, Richard is chosen for the H/H match... Today's question: "________ Machine" Maybe a little harder than yesterday's? I'll say Sewing Machine. The contestant looks serene. The camera cuts to Mr. Dawson as he finishes his response. Ding! I'll be darned. I matched the contestant again. I've been doing that a lot lately. But the question is, will Richard match her? (The audience gave "lukewarm applause" so I'm thinking there's a more obvious answer?) Richard references gambling and reveals "Slot" machine. (I guess washing machine would have been another possibility.) No match today. Another quick game. Another new champion. He calls on Fannie (perhaps to apologize), Richard, and Charles for audience match suggestions. He takes Fannie's answer and wins $250. ...But, just like yesterday, time runs out, and we'll have to wait until next time for the H/H match. (For the contestant it'll be a longer wait: This show was taped on October 19, 1975. The next show will be taped on Halloween (!) October 31, 1975.) This week there were 5 H/H matches altogether, and 2 were successful: Richard 2/5 Yes, it was all Richard all the time for the second week in a row. In fact, other than Mary Ann Mobley's win in episode 585, it's been only Richard all the way back to 573 when Brett had an unsuccessful attempt. I miss the weeks when 2 or even 3 different celebs got to play the H/H match. It was more interesting that way. At any rate, Richard ends the week at 40.1%, virtually where he started, and, obviously, no other movement in H/H stats this week: Both William Shatner and Julie Harris "retire" from Match Game '7x without ever being chosen for the head-to-head match. Fannie remains at her 52.6% H/H accuracy rate, better than any of the three regulars and better than even Betty White (who would be my first choice to call on for the H/H match if I were playing back then)! And, as an added bonus, Fannie returns next week! Yes, she's pulling her third Match Game "double"! Along with Fannie and our three regulars, we once again have two "one-and-done" celebs in the same week: Joe Silver takes the #1 position and Esther Rolle is given the #4 seat. In the past I've mentioned that booking two new celebrities the same week doesn't seem like the best programming strategy, and nothing has changed my mind in the meantime. ...And here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts). Betty - 46.9% (15 wins in 32 attempts). Charles - 45.2% (19 wins in 42 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 40.1% (134 wins in 334 attempts). Brett - 38.0% (19 wins in 50 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 595, excluding the lost/missing episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
Pretty good week this week but Richard managed to take it again for the regulars giving away 11,500 dollars in audience match and head to head match matches with 14 matches. Fannie won for the semi regulars giving away 750 dollars in audience match match with 10 matches. Charles gave away 500 dollars in an audience match match.

That's the second day in a row where they had to end the show in the middle of the Super Match. Don't recall that ever happening. And that Charles, is just gosh darn sexy. Kind of reminds of Tom Valenti.
Joe Ambrose Oh just one of the most famous contestants on Match .Game ever. He was the high school gym teacher who was "flirting" with Fannie all the time, Some of the funniest episodes ever. 🤣🤣
I love the way Richard jumped to Fannie’s defense by asking if Charles the contestant was a male chauvinist pig. The contestant was just rude to Fannie and everyone knew it.
" Are you married?" "No thank you!" Great answer!
I've been married and divided my stuff in half twice, that would be my answer today. I wish it was my answer when I was single and had all my stuff.
HAHAHAHAHA I couldn't stop laughing at that
Too funny.

I think Charles (the contestant) meant "No thank you" to marriage in general, not Fannie personally.
Uh...she was acting.. she did that often on Match Game...remember her Greta Garbo impersonation?
And she was dating a woman at this time..
well she is a lesbian
No sh*t, ya think ?
Charles may be gay.
It occurs to me that someone should write a book about this fabulous game show...how it was created, the backstory, how it worked, the behind the scenes stories of sex and fun.
There was a special about 20 years ago on GSN "Behind The Blank." That's probably the closest any effort will come.
There are two books I can think of: Match Game 101: A Backstage History of Match Game by A. Ashley Hoff and The Matchless Gene Rayburn. The latter is more about Gene but still. Both are worthy of a mention!
I like to think Gene is mouthing "I love you" to his wife at the beginning of every episode.
I think he is
19:24 Bern Bennett subbed next week for Johnny Olson, so he voiced next week’s celebrities.
Thanks! I came to the comments to ask who the voice was.
NO THANK YOU ... hilarious
The cutest I've seen in a while . 💖 Omg so handsome!
Let hear it for Missouri City Texas!!! ;0)
Great episode. Laughed from beginning to end - even Richard‘s comment to Julia Harris: „This is the talking part“.
Gene , funny entrance
Definitely was not Johnny Olson announcing next week's celebrities at the end, wonder what happened....
Johnny was out for a week and Bern Bennett ("Beat the Clock" and "To Tell the Truth") filled in.
"No thank you" haha !!!!
Julie Harris was 49 when she guested, and she was STUNNINGLY beautiful.
I'll bet he was scuba diving looking for mermaids.🧜♀
Man, Charles (the contestant) definitely offended the panelists when they thought he was dismissing Fannie's offer.
nah, I'm sure they all knew that Fannie was gay
Okkkkkkkkkk then!
Gene Rayburn said it's not a few minutes and I'm just going down there end links coming through
Charles was a cutie!
Panelists:
1. William Shatner
2. Brett Somers
3. Charles Nelson Reilly
4. Julie Harris
5. Richard Dawson
6. Fannie Flagg
Fannie is adorable and Ann is gorgeous
Ann is very gorgeous! She reminds me of Whitney Houston.
From this episode the only 2 still with us are Fannie and Bill.
Gene Rayburn said it's okay it's okay

Cool Video
I love when Fannie pretends to be straight
Who was announcing the next celebrities?
Damn, that Charles was a gorgeous hunk of man.
He looks a bit like Christopher Reeves. It's the dimples I think
@@storylass9071 It's Chris Reeve. The TV Superman was George Reeves
I have a friend who looks just like him, it's uncanny. I even made him watch this show to see himself, 40 plus years earlier, haha.
He is certainly handsome.
@@joeambrose3260I love Superman and Christopher Reeves, but I don't see him in Charles at all. But he is very nice looking.
When asked if he was married he should’ve said no I’m happy!!!😂😂😂
What's up with the blurred out end credits?

19:01 Let's see what's under the 500 dollar number. " Slide it Earl. "
The Sitting Bull question at 14:43 would be used again a few years later, on Match Game Syndicated episode 39: ua-cam.com/video/eJxmY5jk084/v-deo.html
That's the second day in a row where they had to end the show in the middle of the Super Match. Don't recall that ever happening. And that Charles, is just gosh darn sexy. Kind of reminds of Tom Valenti.
Naa, it happens lots of time that they have to split the end game between two shows..
Who the phuck is Tom Valenti ?
Joe Ambrose Oh just one of the most famous contestants on Match .Game ever. He was the high school gym teacher who was "flirting" with Fannie all the time, Some of the funniest episodes ever. 🤣🤣
His name was Ron Valenti.
The first thought that came to my mind was Rob Grill. Lead singer to the " Grass Roots. "
19:25 - Bern Bennett Announcing The List of Celebrities for next week
I think Johnny O was off that time.
BEA, not Bern
@@retrochick9993 SHE! you don't recognize her voice!
@@kristabrewer6736 Wrong as usual.
How dumb Dora was so dumb he didn't want her son to get spoiled
Banjo eyes...? What is that?
@MAC lol
Good question.
Once again Fanny having to pretend she's romantically attracted to men.
ROFL!! Another good episode, thanks seems back to normal.. ;0) Hey isn't that Gene's leisure suit on Charles??? No Gene what happen????? ;0)
Brett's reveal of her answer at 6:39 is one of my top 10 favorite Brett Somers moments!
I'm not ready to marry yet, is a better answer.
Coming from Alabama I'm surprised fanny didn't say banjo on my knee
Is it okay if I if I Chuck said the first thing I

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA you are HILLARIOUS (not). EVERYONE knew the contestant didn't mean Fannie WOW!
I can say
Everyone on the Panel needs to STOP!! They ALL knew Fannie was gay and I seriously think they hurt that guy's feelings.
Has anyone seen the episode Betty is talking about in this video at 2:50?
