Thanks, Howard Jarvis. Today, 30 October 2024, Proposition 13 is again under attack by Proposition 5. Thanks to you, I can post this video to show people what the real target is: Prop 13. Keep doing the great work you do. It is truly unique what this organization has done for California. If someone doesn't believe me, phone a friend in another state and ask them do they have protections like Prop 13. Thanks.
Prop 13 should be abolished in a revenue neutral way. That way, the taxable value of the home will be the same as the current market value, but the total property taxes collected statewide would stay the same
homes should be marked to market, and taxed on today's value, %40 of home are owned by boomers, yet they're only %20 of the population, that's a big disproportion.
They have prop 13 in their sights... Lots of talk about "updating" it with our one party California system I think they might just get bold enough to try it.
Well done Jon, but give some numbers on the big picture. Like total prop taxes paid in 2014 vs 2004. With large home turn over in the last ten years and huge appreciation the $ going to state coffers must be massive!
@@johnconnor7501 Lets say you bought a home in the 80s in Malibu for about 190,000(medium cost during that time) Prop 13's 2% cap would mean that today you're paying property tax on about 430,000 dollars. Today the average cost of a home in Compton is about 550,000 dollars. Meaning a new person trying to buy a house in Compton, one of the least desirable areas in Los Angeles has to pay property tax on about 120,000 dollars more of property value than someone living in a mansion off the coast who just happened to get into the market early.
So then, what about those “special assessments”??? The house we bought was being advertised with just 1% property tax, and after reassessment, it added almost $3k!!! What the heck is that about?!??
Hi. My family’s home was transferred to be before 2021 , it is my primary residence and my taxes are still as they were in 1960. My mother is now telling me that propositions will no longer stand, and she wants me to quick deed the home to her. She claims that since she is over 60 years old, she will be able to preserve the tax rate that is currently on the home. She says that soon I will have to pay the taxes for a new home valuation (around $800k). She claims a real estate agent told her that Propositions will no longer stand. She also claims that there is a program in CA that will pay off the mortgage on this home after her death if I quick deed her this home. Is she lying ?
Prop 13 is a big deal. Property tax's used to cost more than the mortgage on the house! Try raising kids with Tax's rising every year! Try this in Wisconsin a 3 Bed 1and 1/2 bath house on market for $156,300 this years tax's $3787. Conventional loan $560/mo tax/mo $315/mo. If they had prop 13 tax starts at $130/mo. Big difference and you don't get taxed out of your home down the line.
Jeff Herriman That's what they want you to believe Prop 13 is a loophole for big businesses to get out of paying taxes. We the people end up paying more for fancy government building and public places we won't see in our communities.
Michell are you even a homeowner?Prop 13 is doing wonders for homeowners. Now if you think businesses are using this as a loophole for taxes you got to do a better job discribing that. But think about this... If you increase property taxes for businesses the price for their products and services will also increase, which will make us pay more for those products or services!!! If a Business is using illegal practices to going wealth go bring a legal lawsuit against them! But honest business are already in heavy competition to bring the best price for products and services, that's why 4 out of 5 new businesses fail after 5 years! Peoplen freely choose to spend their money on what products and services they want, business do not use force! If you think it's simple to run a business and make millions by any means feel free to make your own business and charge less! But raising taxes will make it more expensive for people with fixed incomes!
For those of you who think repealing prop 13 is the answer need to go back to school and start over! Prop 13 is one thing that California has right, out of millions of stupid things!
Almost right- the following is an excerpt from a 2020 Jim Shultz article written for Cal Matters: "Today the California Legislative Analyst’s Office estimates that the commercial property loophole (for corporations) costs California between $8 billion and $12 billion per year in lost revenue. Four decades ago, California’s corporate leaders opposed the windfall given them by Prop. 13. In November they will spend millions to protect it."

Nice if you go in the property market early in CA. Sucks if you are young person trying to buy a house.
Why is that?

Having an older white male deliver this message is not going to win us new converts.
I was converted and I’m what you call “a person of color”. Typical SWPL.
