Late Winter Transition Fishing! (Targeting Bass When Conditions Change)

  • Come along for a fun evening on the water! Tim is targeting largemouth during a Winter warming trend. A warm storm blew through the area yesterday, causing the creeks to flow warm, muddy water into the lake. Temperatures are rising but the bass are still lethargic.
This transitional time can be really difficult but Tim turned to downsized baits to catch them consistently. We often rely on a blade bait but this time he went even smaller than normal to get fish to react. Late Winter is a balancing act between air temperatures, water temperatures, and fish behavior. It's easy to speed up your retrieves in anticipation of Spring, but we aren't quite there yet.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits and gear Tim used through the video. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

The Curado BFS has opened up a lot of opportunities. 1/4oz bladebaits, Karashi's, etc. My mother asked me last year when she found out she had brain cancer, what rod and reel she could get for me. She said, "I may not be here for your birthday or next Christmas, so I want to get you this now (indeed, she didn't make it that long). She got me a Curado BFS and a Dobyns BFS rod, so it's special to me every time I catch a fish with it.

I just wanna say thanks for all the advice! I have never been able to catch bass in the winter time. Recently I went out and tried your techniques of speed cranking and finesse fishing and consistently caught bass all day long. Y'all are the most helpful fishing channel i have ever come across.

Thanks for cleaning up the lake! I always do the same. I hooked "something big" and thought it was a catfish at first. It turned out to be a 6' wooden step ladder- but I landed that sucker! I didn't want to loose my LV-500.

Catching the Red Bull was awesome! Once I caught my jig that I had break off the day before. Another time, I caught a small bat that hit my lure as I casted it. Released unharmed. Same with a young herring gull.

I caught a big owl on a Deps NZ crawler night fishing last year. It felt like a "nice fish" as I reeled it in out of the moonlit sky.
It had a tender foot when I let it go, probably stick to mice and rabbits after that and leave the fishing to the osprey.

Strangest for me was I had a freshwater mussel actually grab both hooks of a crankbait. I didn't hook the outside, the hook points were perfectly grabbed in the opening. I didn't know what it was, but I didn't think it was a fish.
Some other strange ones...I caught a 6 foot fiberglass step ladder. It was standing upright even and had dozens of lures snagged on it. My bait came loose before I could grab it, I just saw it under the surface.
I had made a cast once with an LC1.5 (on a spinning rod) and right when I cast a gust of wind caught the line and blew a big loop in it. Right when the bait landed, a pair of geese landed off to my right. My line landed on one of their backs and I didn't realize it. It spooked and flew away, and I watched my first ever $15 crankbait flying behind a goose. Wound up flying the goose like a kite and crashing it back into the water, which knocked the bait free and let the goose fly away.

Last fall I was musky fishing in the collins river here in Tennessee (next time you guys feel like musky fishing that’s the place to go,) while I was fishing a deeper hole just up river of myers cove ramp I hooked into a baitcaster combo and it was the oddest setup ive ever seen. It was a Shimano metanium mgl on a 10 dollar ozark trail rod. Crazy right? Just wait… I pull this thing in and I’m looking at it and everything is fine so I start to reel it in to take the reel off and it starts pulling back against me. There was a 19 inch smallmouth caught on a finesse jig on the end of the line! I wish I had that on camera but it was toward the end of the day and both my batteries on my go pro were dead. Awesome story though and I still use that metanium to this day on my chatterbait setup…

Snagged a bundle of snagged lures and a ton of fishing line once in a bit of current. It felt like vicious head shakes. I was so disappointed, but I did pull up as much of it as a could to clean out the spot and actually kept 2 of the lures because they were good lures.
Also, I can't believe how many little rocks I've caught that have had tiny holes in them that my hook had gone straight into. Like what are the odds that I would come across a rock with a hole in it just big enough for a treble hook to barely slip into nonetheless actually thread the needle mid retrieve 3+ feet under the water 🤔 And I've done it a few times!

Ok, here goes, we use to throw the old Rattling Hot n Tot in early spring and slay largemouth on it. Whilst cranking that old Tot one day I set the hook and boy let me tell you, that padded toilet seat with the back still on it headed for deep water. I was all over the front of my boat fighting that thing, especially when the seat back would fold and then unfold😂😂😂😂 I was terribly disappointed when I got it up to the boat.
