Dr Who Dying a Slow, Painful (Woke) Death

- As a kid, I loved Doctor Who, the British science fiction TV series broadcast by the BBC. As a bit of a nerd myself, Doctor Who felt a bit like a haven for the nerdy created by science geeks with authentic quirks and creativity. It was both funny at times, as well as a little bit scary, but ultimately, it was entertaining. The original writers’ genuine weirdness, wit, and sci-fi creativity have in many people’s opinion, been replaced by hollow gloss, focus-group keywords, forced inclusiveness and political correctness, which come off as disingenuous, reducing once rich characters to meagre stereotypes distracting from what could be, and should be, compelling storytelling.
The Doctors I most remember were Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy, probably just because they were around when I was growing up. I also have some memory of the earlier Doctors, I guess because they probably showed a lot of reruns on TV.
Doctor Who took a bit of a hiatus in the early 1990s, but there was a Doctor Who television movie in 1996, which I never watched, I think I was too busy with high school.
But then in 2005, there was a revival of sorts with four more doctors taking on the role. I only ever watched a couple of episodes - I guess I had grown out of it a bit - but my friends and colleagues who were keen Whovians, generally liked this era of Doctor Who. I believe these four Doctors were typically highly regarded among fans of the show.
But of course, all good things must come to an end. In 2017, the BBC noticed something a little bit unusual about the casting of these Doctors over the last 36 seasons or so, and I think you can guess what… They were all men! This clear favouritism and inequity couldn’t be allowed to go on any longer! The BBC correctly pointed out, “Ladies can be Doctors too”, don’t you know?
So this brings us to our thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, who starred in three seasons and a few specials between 2018 and 2022. From what I’ve heard, she’s a fine actor, but there was obviously some backlash casting a female Doctor Who.
According to the ratings database, IMDb, of the 13 series since the 2005 revival, the three lowest ranked seasons were the three Jodie Whittaker seasons.
It was towards the end of Jodie Whittaker’s stint as the Doctor that the BBC signed a deal with Disney meaning all new seasons of the show will stream exclusively on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland ending the 50-year partnership between the BBC and the public broadcaster in Australia, the ABC. This means Whovians outside of the UK would have to fork out a subscription fee to watch the show from 2023 onwards.
The tenth Doctor, David Tennant, reprised the role and became the fourteenth Doctor in 2023 starring in three specials to celebrate the program’s 60th anniversary with disability, sexuality, and gender all covered.
The character of Davros, a major enemy of the Doctor, used to be wheelchair bound in the original series, albeit, a very futuristic looking wheelchair, but in the most recent incarnation, he is able-bodied. But why? Executive producer Russell T. Davies, who describes himself as “absolutely happily left wing”, said it was to avoid contributing to harmful tropes of disabled villains in media.
But this year being the year of super-diversity and uber-inclusion. the pièce de résistance, as I kind of hinted at the start, is the next incarnation of the Doctor who turns out to be a different ethnicity, and perhaps, a different sexuality, with Rwandan-Scottish queer actor (his words, not mine), Ncuti Gatwa, taking on the role of the fifteenth Doctor. Look, I’m sure he’s a good actor, but is this what Doctor Who fans want, or is this what Disney and the BBC want? I don’t know. The series contains a villain by the name of Maestro played by real-life American drag queen Jinkx Monsoon, who has been described by showrunner Russell T. Davies as “the Doctor’s most powerful enemy yet.” I know, it sounds like I’m making all this up, but I’m not.
Look, I think there’s only one of two ways this can go. Either I’m completely wrong, and actually hardcore fans, as well as new fans of the show, love the new super-diversity and uber-inclusion path that the Doctor is taking, or, this season sounds the death knell for Doctor Who as we know it. My feeling is that the once-loved Doctor has been ruined by the BBC’s self-righteous pandering and incessant moralising. Gone are the days where we could enjoy Doctor Who as an innocent adventure series. Now they desperately try to please everyone and avoid offence at all cost. Its preachy woke agenda is just resulting in losing viewers and credibility in the process. Unless something drastically changes, Doctor Who is destined for the same fate as other Disneyfied projects - forgotten and axed. Rest in peace Doctor Who. You were once great, but the BBC has utterly destroyed you.

You might say the BBC has..... Exterminated the series.
All that's left is for them to defund the TARDIS because... police.
Let's say that the BBC loaded the gun and pointed it at the head, but it was Disney who pulled the trigger. The BBC has no say at all in what happens to Doctor Who following it's sale to the house of mouse.
You could say they... deleted its relevance.
Wherever dead-by-woke franchises go after expiring, they're in good and abundant company by now.
Won't be long b4 they remake Jane Austin...oh, they did.
The Davros wheelchair thing is unbelievably tonedeaf. Not only are disabled people losing representation, saying that he can't be in a wheelchair because that indicates all wheelchair users are evil basically means that now they're saying that all able bodied people are evil. Can't have it one way if it's not the other way too.
He needs to take a long look inside if he sees Davros and feels it implies all disabled people are evil.
He's the one who's a sick fcuk!!!
I'm a wheelchair user and I love the old Davros, and would appreciate if Davies just treated disabled people as everyone else. I don't care if Davros is evil and in a support system, just as able bodied people don't care they can be represented as evil either. if he thinks he's making things better, he's not, he's just screwing up a great character.
@@spacecadetmcgee7349 Exactly. I wonder if anyone ever called him out on this BS and whether he responded.
It might help if you realise that it's a very early incarnation of Davros, before he got the chair.

I'm a woman and grew up watching Doctor Who. He's always been a white, straight man, with a Grand daughter. I prefer him that way. If they want to check boxes, create new characters, not mess with what works.
I agree but go 1 further and say go make your own bloody show but they wont do that because 1 they know no-one will watch it and 2 that's not the agenda. One of the ironic things - and a snarky comment by one of the DR Who revuers (in the Guardian (no surprises there)) was that "Dr Who was not made for CIS White Males"... well, it actually was. It wasn't made for 'cis' white males, when I watched it in the 60's/70's it was known as a KIDS show not a show for men, 'cis' white or otherwise.
And these are the same people saying it is all about inclusivity! 😅
They will find out that the majority will win out in the end. It is utterly disgusting that a public funded broadcaster in a democracy can display such contempt for the majority.

She comes across as a killjoy who's there to make sure no one gets any big ideas or has any fun.
I'm not sure who thinks that Jodie Whittaker is a good actor.
I first came across her in the brilliant British crime series Broadchurch, with the lead actors being David Tennant (coincidently) and Olivia Coleman. There were many other fine actors in the series. But, although Jodie Whittaker had major role in the series, she had all the appeal of a wet sock. As an actress she is just plain bland.
She would be best at playing housewives.

Sadly, I have to agree. It's been ruined. Also, lets not forget the Chibnall 'Timeless Child' debacle - which announced to the world that the Doctor wasn't even a 'Timelord'.
Negating 60 years of Dr Who canon in one fell swoop. We are also being told that Dr Who is lo longer a 'Science Fiction' show. It's genre is now 'Fantasy'.
Another excellent commentary, albeit a bit of a shift from your usual fare. Your comments about the BBC are very relevant, unfortunately they probably also apply to our ABC to a slightly lesser degree. It's a little different but it's interesting to note that they were both very early adopters of the TNI. In fact the BBC is where it began as far as I'm aware.
so the Doctor has gone the way of Indiana Jones and Star Wars....
Indeed. And Star Trek as well.
I wish I could sue these people for the cultural vandalism on display.
I do too. It's shameful.
Change everything and the series will bomb. Woke crap will destroy everything. Well done BBC.
My roommate and I (19 and 20) in the US, would come home from work every afternoon and watch Tom Baker reruns on PBS. Good times. A shame they are gone, never to be seen again.
After the 13th Doctor Jodie Whittake rewrite his past killing him I could not believe Catherine Tate and David Tennant came back to help destroy any remaining part of him and drive the nails into his coffin to make sure he could never be revived for his old fans.
This means to me Peter Capaldi the 12th Doctor is the last Doctor for me
All the BBC had to do was let the 12th Doctor die (as Timelords are supposed to) and have him pass the Tardis onto his grand daughter Susan. Susan opens the Tardis heart when he dies, The Dr’s energy merges with the Tardis, Susan regenerates into Jodie and Susan continues on. The Dr can even pop up as a hologram inside the Tardis to help Susan.
Tom Baker is my favourite Dr, ever in billions of ways and he will always be my favourite Dr.
100%
Nothing wrong with that at all. I grew up watching Baker/Davison/Baker/McCoy etc.
But my favourite is Matt Smith.
Dr Who is so dead that comment videos like this won't be getting much more custom. This latest one {Doctor} has moved me to the who cares camp. No pun intended.

God, if only. But no this bizarre cottage industry will survive, more's the pity, because the Right-wing dark money funding it isn't going away.
@@granttlcuk So you like Dr Gay?

@@jackturpin7828 That's a "I'm not answering your primary school level questions."
This new Series 1 may lay the groundwork for the show's cancelation... but by shooting Series 1 & 2 back-to-back, a 2nd Series is pretty much guaranteed at this point. It's already been pretty much in the can (if it's not already there).
And that's kind of the problem. Series 2 was written and produced without any feedback on Series 1. That means any course correction likely won't happen until Series 3. IMHO, if the viewers keep tuning out through Series 2... the chances of Disney bailing on any addition series goes up... as does the chances that the series will be cancelled.
And RTD claims he's already working on material for Series 3... so that might complicate any need for a course correction too.
Terry Nation would turn in his grave..
He was a storyteller. He'd love it.
Rowan Atkinson was by far the best ever Dr Who.
A must watch video on UA-cam is ....
" Rowan Atkinson is Doctor Who | Comic Relief "
It's as funny as hell and sums up the Dr in one episode.
Thanks, I'll check it out.
@@DailyInsightAU Cheers mate , you wont be disappointed 👍
I feel some pity for the Master in those sewers! 😅
@@DailyInsightAUTalking of comedy Jon Culshaw of Dead Ringers played a good Doctor loved it..
Pakistani dalek is pretty funny as well 🤣
“Aargh Pat Troughton does not have white hair, it’s ruined.” My first memory of Dr who🙁
They weren't just Men. They were strait white men
even Colin Baker? He seemed kind of flaming.
The horror!
If they had to go for a black guy, Richard Ayoade would have been good. He even dresses like a Dr Who. Injecting a bit of humour would have made it a bit fresher, too...
Yes. Gatwa is far too young. Matt Smith was also too young but they dressed him older and it worked.
I think a 'James Earl Jones' type.
Big Driss wasn't touching it
At 10:45 you stated "try to please everyone", but I think you are incorrect due to the fact they are very consciously targeting a specific class of people who believe feelings = reality and this is definitely (thank goodness) not everyone. This is also evident by the actors who state " go and touch grass" or "this is not for you" if you don't go along with the dysphoric derangement in society.
We just need to gender swap a classic female character and see how they like it
Race swap an established black character and see what happens?
Here's why that's a smooth-brained comment:
You have a split of 97% versus 3%. The 3% complain and ask for 5%. But the 97% turn around and say god how about we make them 2% and see how THEY like it?!? (percentages made up to highlight the problem, not representative of actual porportions)
Woman, Minorities, etc are trying to bring things back to balance. Comments like this ignore that inequality already exists, and that white males have been the de-facto representation for so long now you only notice it when others question it..
I think one reason for going off into identity politics is that the showrunners have run out of ideas and are doing anything they can just to garner attention. I hardly even want to give them that attention by discussing it anymore. Historically, Doctor Who has gone through slumps. Not that many people fondly remember the Colin Baker period. IMO, the show needs to go back into mothballs. It can wait for another reboot in the future. At present, it's like a band that hasn't made a good album in a while doing stunts for publicity.
Television as a whole, is not worth watching.
I got rid of mine!
Even though many objected to Jodi's seasons, I think her shows are still more watchable than the stuff they're creating now. Lets look at what just happened to Bud Light when they decided to cater to a group that makes up less than 1% of the population.
I disagree. Series 14 is better so far and here we go, thinking that a person of r company are catering to a group just because they had a team's person's face on beer cans. How is that pandering or catering to a group?
I can't understand why the BBC would trash one of their best loved characters. The money that they made off merchandise alone would be reason enough to take the show off a few months to hire a new Doctor Who and writing staff and get rid of all the woke nonsense.
as the saying goes,,,...'everything that goes 'W', goes to sh*t'.
Trump 2024.
The problem with Jodie wasn’t her gender, it was her accent. The US audience couldn’t understand her.
Maybe they needed to watch more stuff with English people in. Did they have this difficulty with Eccleston, or with Jane Leeves' Manchester accent in "Frasier"? We didn't moan when we saw The Wire season 1 with its thick African American Baltimore accents. Subtitles exist for all of these.
Why should the North not be represented? We see and hear lots of different accents from USA most of us don’t speak posh we need diffent accents other than southerners all the time…on TV not less!! ….Glad when we got Eccleston representing the North!!
I stopped watching it yrs ago after a line in an episode stating "I can tell his in HQ because of his hair" I was like "wtf was that about" turns off.
Which episode was that?
"I can tell his in HQ because of his hair" I don't even know what that means.
Woke destroys everything it touches, because it's designed to destroy everything it touches. It's not a bug, it's a feature.
Yes, when you reject all prior standards yet provide no vetted substitute, that is nihilism, pure and simple.
If you want to see how far its sunk, watch the brilliantly tight scripted and imaginative episode 'Blink: from the Tennant era where the Dr is barely in the episode, to this current season. The change is more than dramatic
It was dead the second Disney got hold of it.
Disney is just a giant meet grinder for traditionally loved stories, movies and T.V shows.
If they strip us of our sense of cultural identity, it is easier to control us.
Based on the idea that every bad movie spoils the memory of a good movie in it's franchise, They erase these movie franchises from our list of happy memories.
It's like bombarding matter with antimatter until it no longer exists.
Makes up your minds!!! It was dead when Moffat took over. Dead when Capaldi arrived. Dead when Chibnall took over. Dead when the Doctor turned female,. Dead now the Doctor's Black. Dead now that it's Disney financed.....jesus h, when do you folks go and get yourselves lives away from all the proclamation of death and doom?
The great Walt Disney must be turning in his grave.
Surely the daleks were just vehicles for mutant evil Kaleds, disabled by thermonuclear war!
None of this rubbish will make any of today's kids say in 20 years, 'I remember hiding behind the sofa when Dr Who was on the telly' I am so lucky to have been the perfect age to be doing this in Tom Baker's gothic era during the mid 70's, when horror was it's aim and not some box ticking exercise of 'inclusiveness. I'll be willing to bet that nobody equated Wheelchair users to the evil of Davros, all except these idiots, it goes a long way to seeing how their minds work, they are actually actively looking for these things in the most innocent places. I do hope that this is the end, because I shudder at the thought of what they will do next when this new Dr leaves after his one and only series.
Good video. You missed the worst thing about David Tennant's return - the anti-male sexism, where the 'female' characters talk down to him and tell him he's stupid because he's male!
I love how many craws that has stuck in.
From this Australian 50+ year Doctor fan. I said goodbye last year and it seems that was a good decision.. Now Woke Ass Disney have their hands on the show..
RIP The Once Great Doctor😞
Oh it's not dying man, it's dead.
Disney is destroying all great franchises this last years...
I didn't have any issues with Jodi Whittaker as the Doctor, however, the writing for her 3 seasons was atrocious. Had she been given better scripts she could have become a fan favourite, but the writers made the stories too woke, preachy, and flat, which caused a lot of fans to leave. Now we have Ncuti Gatwa and RTD throwing their sexual lifestyle (LGBTQ???) in the viewers faces every week. Is it any wonder that even more viewers have tuned out? IMHO, Dr. Who started dying about half way through Capaldi's last season.
I fully agree.
Had she been given better scripts, it still would have been garbage. You know why? Because she hated The Doctor and Doctor Who. Besides, do you think she didn't push for the garbage in her seasons? Please.
Honestly, I always wonder why the people running the franchise can't leave a well running series concept untouched and, if they want to focus on diversity, inclusion, using new pronouns etc., then create a spin-off, e. g. calling it "Dr. Who Mysteries" or something like that, while the old series could still go on the way it always did. This way, the old fanbase could still enjoy the original show while other kind of viewers can watch the spin-off with all changes the producers can ever dream of. But no, they prefer to change a once popular franchise that many people like into a totally different show that nobody likes (beside themselfs). So it happened to Star Wars, Star Trek and even now to Dr. Who, and I bet they will blame the audience again for not accepting this new strategy. In other words: Even the Daleks would wonder how they "exterminated" the Dr. Who show. Pity.
Once an iconic institution, the woke influences within bbc have managed to make a complete sham of this once great series
8:45 - "Look, I'm sure he's a good actor"
That aged well...
