It’s still baffling that Logan Paul is the third longest reigning US Champion in WWE history. Even though he only defended 3 times, his performances were amazing. But it’s now in the hands of the MEGASTAR LA Knight YEAH!!
Being talented in the ring is always a moot point. Logan wasn't given the title because he was good. It was because of money. It was only a benefit for us that he was good in the ring when he did appear, but that was NOT the reason he was able to hold the title and for so long.
18 months later, Wrestlemania last year was the right time to pull the trigger on Rhodes winning the championship. Only because Roman had 5 more televised defenses after Mania 39. But, all the storytelling and patience for Rhodes to FINALLY win the Championship and finish the story this year. Made it all worthwhile in the end
Roman held the title for 4yrs (give or take) and made over 50 title defences in that time, which equates to just a smidge over one-per-month on average.
Roman was featured on regular basis and even defended the title on SmackDown. It's only after the match with Brock he started appearing less frequently Guess Brock passed the part time schedule torch to Romn at WrestleMania 38.
If we go back into the 80s and earlier the world title defences were treated more like boxing world title defences. Large hype and build and a lengthy lead up. In my opinion that made the world titles feel so much more important than they do today.
One no one tend to think about: The Edge Heads, Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins, never once defended their WWE Tag Team Titles on television before losing them to Carlito and Primo
This is certainly not a new opinion, but the length of a title reign shouldn't be the be all and end all statistic. While Roman's WWE title reign had sparse defenses, at least each match should have a big match feel to them, especially Clash 2022, Rumble 2024, and Mania XL. The other PPVs can showcase the midcard/tag team belts more often... ideally.
i actually think champions shouldn't defend the titles on a regular basis like most people prefer. it makes the times they do defend the belt feel extra important. for example, when lesnar or roman would defend at the big shows, it truly gave the match that "big fight feel." then again, walter defending the i.c. title as often as he did also made that title feel special and it usually seems like a big deal every time cody defends the wwe title, which is essentially every month so i guess it depends case by case.
I really hope now that Roman and Logan have dropped their respective titles we are done with this ‘giving extended title reigns to part timers’ bs. Its completely unfair to the rest of the roster who work year round. I can let a RR-WM reign i.e. the Rock slide. Hell I’ll even let a reign from Survivor Series to WM slide, but if youre going to have a guy hold a title for over a year I dont think its asking much to defend it at least once a month.
People forget that Roman Reigns defended his title every month from September 2020 - September 2022. Then he had another stretch from November 2022 - May 2023. So I say he was consistent most of his title reign and only defended at Major PLEs. And it worked out
Y’all remember when Roman Reigns heavily criticized Brock Lesnar and John Cena for being part-timers call rarely ever showed up only for him to do the same thing a couple years later? The utter hypocrisy. Yet I like to see how all the Roman marks try to make excuses for him.
Roman was at nearly every single PPV from Payback 2020 to Wrestlemania 38. HIAC 2021's match was moved to Smackdown for ratings, and some other show, I think he was injured. His WWE title reign is certainly a different entity from the 1st half of his Universal title reign.
Thing is with Roman is that if you just take TV defences it averages one defence every month + change (39 days) include house shows he defended it on average every 23 days, so when you look at it like that he defended it quiet often.. yes it’s not on CM Punks level during the ‘summer of punk’ where he defended it something like over 150 times in 400+ days
@Cannibalize946 It was a televised defence EVERY 39 days on average. With house shows, it was less than one month per defence on average. That is not horrible in the slightest.
I know over in Japan champions don't defend nearly as often, but I still have to mention Vader's second run as IWGP champion. Wins the belt August 10th 1989, defends it September 20th and 21st, does not defend it again until February 10th the following year, waits until June 12th for his next, then drops the title August 19th. Possibly making things worse, the defence on Feb 10th was a double countout (also the match where he got his eye dislodged) and the defence on June 12th was a disqualification loss.
Honorable mention to Chris Jericho as IWGP Intercontinental champion. Seven months with NJPW's second biggest belt. Only two title defenses, the second being when he lost it.
