THANK YOU for including Donna Summer. Apart from all the disco and EDM stuff, she was the first African-American woman to have a video on heavy rotation in MTV ("She Works Hard for the Money.") She was also the first African-American woman to win a Grammy for Best Performance by a Female, Rock category ("Hot Stuff"). AND she was the first artist to have 3 consecutive DOUBLE ALBUMS go to #1 on the Billboard hot 100 albums (Live and More, Bad Girls and On the Radio-Greatest Hits Volumes I & II). She was a pioneer in many ways.
Donna Summer is mostly remembered for being the Disco Queen, but to me she’s much more than that. And what you described exactly sums up my thoughts. Apparently when “Hot Stuff” came out, a lot of people were freaking out over the song’s rock influences, with some clubs even refusing to play it just for that reason, but it turned out to be a great career move because it broke barriers. “Hot Stuff” was also apparently made as a response to The Rolling Stones’s disco-influenced songs such as “Miss You”.
@@antoinemouthon6501 Casablanca Records was going to give "Hot Stuff" to Cher (also on Casablanca at the time) because they thought it suited her image more. Somehow Donna kept it for herself. #1 Grammy winning hit..She really proved them wrong!
@@chrishomberg7659 I had thought it was "Bad Girls" that was going to be given to Cher, not "Hot Stuff". In any case, I'm very glad Donna kept the song and made it one of her career highlights. I was pleasantly surprised to see that on this list Donna beat out other female artists like Diana Ross, Cher and Whitney, none of whom made the top 10. (Strange, considering how influential these others are)
Etta James Over Billie Holiday is kinda wild to me but idk what they base this list off. Also not one hip hop or Rap artist has influenced women music which is wild to me
Madonna should be credited with not only empowering women but also her challenging sexual boundaries by bringing LGBTQ+ culture and marginalized sexuality into the mainstream, as proven by her classic "Vogue", her controversial "Justify My Love", and more. Plus she was very public about being gal pals with lesbian celebrities like Sandra Bernhard and Rosie O'Donnell. This was especially influential and important in a time period marked by activists battling homophobia and the HIV and the AIDS crisis.
Is she pals with these women because they have common goals and interests or is it because she wants to be cool and say look I have a lesbian friend? It sounds like she was using them
@@michaelrochester48 It's possible, but one simultaneous effect on audiences-in tandem with many other things happening at the time-was helping to bridge the gap between heterosexual and queer worlds in the mainstream, boosting visibility, and showing the difference between tolerance and acceptance. She also had queer female and male dancers on her tours.
Donna Summer was the first female and the first black artist to take 3 albums to the top of the Billboard 200 back to back (the just happened to be 3 multi-platinun-selling double albums) She was also the first artist to have 3 #1 singles and 5 top 10 and/or 5 top 5 singles in a calendar year (79). The only artist to be nominated for a Grammy in 5 different genres (at least 3 times each), and the only artist to win a Grammy in 4 different genres. She was named the "Dive De Tutti Dive", meaning the first true diva of the modern Pop era, by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
She got all those credits and more, being woman and black made it harder in her time. Talented, beautiful, She didn' t looked like other female artist back then, she was unique.
Britney is definitely NOT an influential singer (or a singer period). Iconic, yes. Influential, no. Her whole style is Madonna and Janet Jackson, adding nothing to the mix.
@@cwise0603 Disagree. BOMT and OIDIA while not inventing teen/bubble gum pop, did revive it and made the genre popular once again. Before her, pop was grunge, punk, and rock. A lot of people didn't even consider her a real artist at first because she didn't write her own music, which is something Britney ended up changing in the music industry. She ended up spawning multiple copy cat artists (that did eventually carve out their own niche). Britney was so influential that a couple artists (most notably Pink and Avril Lavigne started their careers by being "Anti" Britneys). Blackout itself is one of the most influential pop albums ever. Without Blackout, a lot of modern day artists probably wouldn't exist (most notably Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Charlie XCX, Selena Gomez, and Rihanna) While Janet and Madonna also pushed the envelope with female sexuality in media, Britney is the one who really altered the way female artists perform/present themselves. Let's not forget Britney changed the standard for what it means to be a popstar for the following generation. This isn't completely because of Britney (Notably Christina and Justin) but Disney started to manufacture their own popstars after the three's success. She also redefined the Vegas Residency scene. Before Britney, they were seen as a place of retirement for artists. JLO, BSB, Bruno Mars, etc all have started residences that have been successful because of Britney's influence. I know Cher/Celine had residences, but they didn't become as popular until AFTER Britney. To say Britney isn't influential, and doesn't deserve to be on this list is pretty disingenuous.
I'm glad to see my top five in the list! 1. Janet Jackson 2. Loretta Lynn 3. Dolly Parton 4. Cher 5. Shania Twain Although the list didn't have them in the order I'd choose, I'm just glad they were included!
Thank you so much for not over looking or discounting the influence of Donna Summer An artist who co-wrote and or wrote most of her hits and who brought “disco” into the new wave era and beyond
Absolutely love seeing Billie Holiday on the list. I can step in most department stores, cafes, restaurants, or Barnes and Nobles, and still hear her music playing. However, Janet, Mariah, and Whitney should all be in the top 10.
Any list like this without Céline Dion and Barbra Streisand is a bluff. These iconic female legends literally paved the way for some of the artsits included on the list. Also Whitney and Cher is way too low.
It's not a bluff. It's just an opinionated list. It'd be no different if you made a list and you left somebody off the list and somebody else said the same thing about your list. 🙂
@@NguyenVu-rk7ygtheir way of singing continues to influence singers to these days. On every American Idol any girl who can sing at some point is given a Celine/Mariah/Whitney song. They are literally the reference for any female singer who aspires to be a vocalist. Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Christina Aguilera etc etc, they all look up to Celine/Mariah/Whitney/Barbra. Not to mention the importance of their music catalogue!!! Barbra is the best selling female artist from the 60s, and Celine/Mariah/Whitney totally ruled the 90s. Songs like I Will Always Love You or My Heart Will Go On are amongst the best selling singles EVER in music history. All these ladies have had legendary careers and legendary songs. They are the definitions of DIVAS and they all deserve to be higher on the list
Most of them l agree with, but if it’s women of all time too many on the list are too recent to be influential - Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Julie Andrews and Barbra Streisand to name a few have been far more influential! There are a lot of others from the 20th century that paved the way for today’s music.
The artists in the video are / were more influential in terms of what we know to day as popular music. The ladies you mentioned have their own lane. I'm not sure what that lane would be called though. Barbra had a few pop hits 30-40 years ago, but that's all I remember.
@@itsmissvsworld I could say the same about quite a few on this list. It's hard to make a list of influential artists because are you considering overall? Because then Lady Gaga and other modern artists should be replaced by older musicians. Do you mean in their genre? Then you shouldn't have several people that sang the same genre of music on there. I think a better title would be most important. Nothing but love to everyone on the list, but quantifying something like this is nearly impossible.
Janet Jackson (in tandem with Michael Jackson) should also be credited with solidifying choreographed dance performances, particularly group ensemble dances, as a standard in mainstream pop music. That aspect can be seen reflected in the videos and concerts of numerous other female artists, including Britney Spears, Pink, Destiny's Child, Paula Abdul, and K-pop stars.
Well, Paula Abdul choreographed some of Janet's moves, but the others were heavily influenced by Janet. As far as Kpop, I'd say she's a major influence on the legendary Kpop idol BoA.
Glad to see Donna Summer high up on a list when it seems she's normally not. Or, she's absent. Donna Summer's name should always be high up on a list of singers and their vocal ability. This list, however, is about influence. Glad to see she's on it. She has influenced many and continues to do so. It has been said that she was the precursor to Whitney. #1 in my book (Donna).
She WAS the best. She had everything but lost it to drugs. I am no saint myself but she had so much talent, opportunities, money - and lost it . And after her death she put her daughter into danger to leave her with all this money. Looking at all these stories I sometimes really want to go back in times when Michael Jackson was the King without all stupid scandals which he was totally cleared from. Or Whitney is still the one of the greatest singer of our times. Or Heath Ledger or Paul Walker are still alive
I think this is a good list! It's not a ranking of "popular", "most talented", "greatest ability", or "most successful", but a ranking by degree of influence/impact on what was to come after. While ranking of this type is alway subjective, I appreciate the reflection on the impact these women have had on their successors!
I agree! I was so nervous that the top women were going to be like Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears or something. Not that they're not inspirational, but they're not as inspirational and influential as the women on this list. I was so happy with the top five women. I was nervous for a moment seeing the low ranks of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Cher, and Diana Ross, but I knew Aretha had to be #1.
Even then I think "most important" would be a better title, because there are some names in here that were massively important but not necessarily influential. And even then there are some names that got done dirty by not being on.
I know a female artist who dominated Country, Rock, Latin, Jazz, Pop, Broadway, and single handedly rehabilitated the Great American songbook. Linda Ronstadt. Why on earth is she not listed? She helped form the Eagles. First woman to have 5 consecutive platinum albums, I could go on and on. Most of all, the greatest singing voice ever. Ask Dolly Parton, she'll tell you.
The only thing with Linda was everything that she pretty much ever recorded were cover versions of other people’s songs so I’m not seeing any really influential impact from a basic karaoke artist 🤷♂️
One name comes to mind when I read 'Influential Women in Music' and that is Madonna, so I'm glad she's in the top 5, though I would have placed her higher for her influence on pretty much every female pop music star that came after her.
@@antoineclark2474 Sorry but singing is Subjective, I personally find her voice beautiful and unique and If she wasn’t a good singer she wouldn’t have been successful all these years.
@@antoineclark2474. your opinion is utterly subjective. The list is for influential context only. NOT if one like her music OR her voice. Madonna like-it-or-not is unavoidably influential. She is certainly not Whitney or Adele, but it has influenced EVERYONE. And she does sing. Your comment is not only out-of-order, it lack credibility. The woman is good despite her odd life choices, which have been odd YET influential during her entire career. It’s oK not to like her, however challenging her talent and influence is absurd.

This is a great list - I might finagle a few of the rankings, but overall y'all are on point...I also love how you included ladies like Beyonce, Taylor and Gaga in the Honorable mentions. The only glaring omission from this list is Annie Lennox.
I was looking for "sister Rosetta tharpe", was one of the originators or blues & rock and roll. Artists like muddy waters, chuck berry and Johnny cash quote her as an influence
Mariah Carey not being in the top 5 is criminal... but im just happy to see her be included because you guys often exclude her from the "greatest" lists.
Madonna should be the top 1 on this list!! The way she crossed boundaries throughout her music is phenomenal. She really changed the world! She changes People's minds, the world became a better place for the LGBT Community people because of her, and many female artist can express themselves sexually because of her. She's a risk taker and speak her mind for the people who are being oppressed by the society. She's so ahead of her time during the 80s and 90s. She's the best selling female artist of all time. No one comes close to her massive influence in Pop culture. She's in league of her own!!
I think this was a great list. Even though some of these artists are more popular, the list was about who was more inspirational. The women who came before them to pave the way for their popularity deserve higher spots on this list. Bravo to the women in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s that gave the women of today their chance to shine and inspire the next generation.
Donna Summer did create the Pop/Dance Diva concept. She was a True Pioneer who changed the face of Music and who influenced most female singers who followed until today. She could sing every kind of music and her phenomenal voice was unique!!
Excuse me? You might be missing out The Princess of Pop, Britney Spears. How she changed the pop industry during the time when it was dominated by male groups.

Selena (and Ricky Martin) is frequently credited with the crossover of Latin music to the U.S. mainstream, but those who also helped pave the way include Gloria Estefan and Latin freestyle acts like Exposé and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam.
Janet Jackson is too low considering she has influenced an entire generation of artists - men, women, gay, straight, black, white, Asian, old, young. Her reach is very far.
If Britney Spears is not gonna be in the top 20, she at least deserves to be an honorable mentioned because she brought back the teen pop music era and so many of today’s artists wouldn’t even be here without her. And where was Celine Dion?
Laura Nyro's influence on popular musicians has been acknowledged by such artists as Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Tori Amos, Patti Smith, Kate Bush, Diamanda Galas, Bette Midler, Rickie Lee Jones, Elton John, Jackson Browne, Alice Cooper, Elvis Costello, Cyndi Lauper, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Sarah Cracknell, Melissa Manchester, Lisa Germano, and Rosanne Cash. You all forgot to mention: Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar and Roberta Flack. Also, why was Janis Joplin an honorable mention. She should have been in the top ten.

Some amazing women on this list. Particularly happy to see Dolly made it, what a gifted songwriter she is… but seriously, no Streisand? Barbra definitely deserves to be there.
Barbra Streisand GREATLY influenced MANY of these women on your list. Many of them have said how she influenced them-even Aretha Franklin called her great, so I don’t see how you could leave her completely off this list-she’s not even in the honorable mentions. You need to go back and review her whole career- obviously you didn’t.

I know right! Judy was truly amazing! And her music and impact stands the test of time as legendary! Somewhere Over the Rainbow is one of the most beautiful songs EVER written. According to AFI it is the Greatest Movie Song of All Time. She had a stunning voice.
EDIT: IN TODAY'S NEWS, 4/19/22: "Taylor Swift Scores 10th No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Red (Taylor's Version)' Swift becomes only the second woman with at least 10 No. 1s, following Barbra Streisand." AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN GET A MENTION??? The fact that this list does not include Barbra Streisand is a seriously myopic oversight. What seems to be forgotten by the compilers of this list is exactly how much impact Streisand's career has had on more than just music. When she first became noticed in the early 60s, it was because of her being a completely new kind of singer with her powerful belting range and emotional investment in every lyric. She shook up the female recording scene, redefining the trend of bland, cookie cutter pop queens of the day. She was 21 when she signed with Columbia Records, insisting on keeping complete artistic control over her recordings, virtually unheard of at the time, especially for a female singer. By the time she opened on Broadway in FUNNY GIRL, she went from recording artist to major star by the age of 22. Before her, NO ONE kept their ethnic last name, nor their ethnic looking nose. She was urged to change both, but was steadfast in her refusal. She was known to get her clothes at second-hand thrift shops, which set a trend that can still be seen. She became one of the most photographed young women of that time, and was unique in the description of her looks as a "now you see it, now you don't beauty," redefining the very term "beautiful." She even started the trend of long fingernails for women by having 1-inch "scandalously long" nails. She became an instant superstar with the release of the movie version of FUNNY GIRL in 1968, winning the Academy Award for her first film, done by the age of 26. She later became the first and only person to have won Oscars for both acting, for her role in FUNNY GIRL, AND songwriting for "Evergreen," which she co-wrote for A STAR IS BORN. She became the Number One female box office star of the 70s, and became the first woman to produce, direct, write, and star in her own movie, YENTL, becoming the first woman, and still only, woman to win the Golden Globe for Best Director of a Musical or Comedy. Her recording achievements are beyond legendary. What's more, she literally paved the way for just about every pop "diva" that followed, from Whitney to Mariah to Celine; they all, and many others to this day, have given Barbra credit as their inspiration. All that is still just SOME of the ways in which this extraordinary, phenomenal talent has inspired, and continues to inspire, generations of female singers. To COMPLETELY overlook even so much as a MENTION of this icon is inconveivable and totally discredits this entire list.

I first started to listen to Joni Mitchell in high school and continue to do so. A true artist both as a singer, song writer and a graphic artist she has influenced a new generation of artists. Before their was Alanis, Taylor or even Katy we have Joni who stood alone as a performer not the girl lead in a band and inspired other artists including Annie Lennox to do the same.
Not including Abba’s Frida and Agnetha is a crime! Selling 400 million albums and singles, that’s pretty damn influential and sound, fashion and attitude
I am truly surprised artists such as Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Gloria Estefan, Lil Kim, Gladys Knight were not at least mentioned
This was a good list. But I don't necessarily agree with the order and it's a huge oversight that Stevie Nicks wasn't even an honorable mention. Otherwise, good job Mojo. Sidenote: isn't it sad how many of these talented women are no longer with us?
Common Mojo!!! Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey deserves to be on the top 6. These 3 with Donna Summer, Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick opened the doors for the new girls.
I was hesitant to where this list was going with Joni, Cher, Diana, and Whitney so low, but I love where this list went!! These women in the top five are especially inspirational. Especially with Aretha as number 1. 💜
Right? Aretha can be on top spot and I don’t mind it. But the most deserving ones are lower than Selena??? Damn. It costs her life to be on a higher position. I love her but she’s nowhere influential in Asia or the Middle East.

This was a great list, though I could quibble about the order. MOJO can be pretty USA-centric, so I was thrilled at their recognizing international divas like Celia Cruz and Selena. I was also hoping to see MIRIAM MAKEBA. She was Goddess in Africa, the diaspora and much of Europe, bringing the South African influence to western soul and pop. As for cultural significance, it could possibly be said that her voice helped bring down apartheid. BTW, I would have also included Barbra Streisand, Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, Karen Carpenter... but then I just couldn't stop at twenty.

Very disappointing video. Whitney Houston its too low. And, where is Gloria Estefan? She made latin music so popular during the middle 80 and the 90. Without her, latin music wouldn't be as popular as it is these days, and you don't even put her as an honorable mention? C'mon, you put Taylor Swift as an honorable mention but Gloria Stefan didn't deserved to make it on the list? SHE DESERVES MINIMUN TOP 5. I understand the choices made here, putting Etta, Aretha etc, in the Top 5. However, not putting Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston in the top 5... let alone the top ten, is criminal. Especially since they are ranked by Billboard at #3 and #4 most successful female artists of ALL TIME!
As great as many of these women are, my most influential woman in music is Amy Lee of Evanescence. She fought HARD to be a leading woman in a rock band, something you sadly usually don’t get to see (and trust me, I’m a guy, so I’m (sadly) more privileged than many women are in numerous ways). She and her band have made some of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard in life. It also helps that she’s an amazing singer too. Her (and her band’s) music is one of the EXTREMELY rare parts of all pop culture that, on many occasions, has made me cry HARD. Plus, her band’s debut album, Fallen, has become one of the biggest music phenomenons of the early 2000’s that still stand the test of time.
Influential women in music of all time These three musicians really inspire me and leave such an impact to me Reba Macentire-her music just really captures the real meanings of life. In her sitcom she cameo some of her music that really showcases the harmony so perfectly. Also gave me the strength to battle leukemia just like one of her songs I became a “Survivor” Taylor Swift- her music really helped me battled Leukemia and became a cancer survivor. Laurie Lewis- she’s more Americana bluegrass music that I was raised on ever since I was a child. Most importantly it’s never left me like a best friend

I can't believe Celine Dion wasn't even included *clutches pearls* or Barbra Streisand or JUDY FREAKING GARLAND
YES
THIS.
Celine's songs are always on singing contests top list
Probably because the people creating these lists are too young.
Terrible list. Certain people shouldn’t be on the list and others are ranked either too high or too low.
Just want to say that Shania Twain , along with , Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, and Selena were my crushes in the 90s
JUDY GARLAND, Stevie Nicks, even Britney are some of the most influential singers ever.
But Britney CAN'T even sing and ruined the music industry for good
@@madman00774 a lot of women listed here cannot sing but they are still influential and important. You seem to have to have an underdeveloped brain.
Britney does not belong with Judy and Stevie!
Without Blackout, a lot of modern day artists probably wouldn't exist (most notably Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Charlie XCX, Selena Gomez, and Rihanna)
While Janet and Madonna also pushed the envelope with female sexuality in media, Britney is the one who really altered the way female artists perform/present themselves.
1. Janet Jackson
2. Loretta Lynn
3. Dolly Parton
4. Cher
5. Shania Twain
Although the list didn't have them in the order I'd choose, I'm just glad they were included!
Thank you so much for not over looking or discounting the influence of Donna Summer
An artist who co-wrote and or wrote most of her hits and who brought “disco” into the new wave era and beyond
True
they have great voice but only the voice and change nothing. period
I agree with the list, but add: Celine Dion, Adele, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, and Annie Lennox
Agreed.
Yeah i totally agree they should add these people
Agreed but we really haven’t seen Adele’s impact/influence just yet. I feel we need a couple more years to see the true impact she has had.
I agree!
I think if it was about singers specifically they would have been on it. Great choices though and Patti and Chaka in my top 20
Thank you for including latin Icons like Selena and Celia Cruz. They have done so much. Their legacy will live on and continue to inspire others.
Gloria Estefan deserves a spot on this list as well.
@@antoinemouthon6501 Selena was highly more influential than Gloria Estefan. Many Americans don't even know she's Hispanic.

I really enjoyed this list! So many beautiful voices and genre!
Janet Jackson should be higher on this list. She is one of the rare artists who dominated multiple genres of music.
Mariah out of Top 10 is insane. But behind Selena? I can’t even have a word for it
This is stupid list. MARIAH should be top 3 at least!
Joan Jett is the reason why it's cool to play like a girl. And nothing gets me going like a good Donna Summer tune to this day
Suzi Quatro was the original girl rocker.
I love DONNA! Glad someone finally adding her to a list and giving her, her props.
she's absolutely excellent I hope you're enjoying some dancing friend 🪩🩰
Donna Summer is more influential than Whitney Houston or Janet Jackson (she was famous before them and influenced by her). Madonna was also a big fan.
Definitely Whitney Houston it's just so sad she's gone and her daughter they're all good singers however Whitney Houston is the best
She WAS the best. She had everything but lost it to drugs. I am no saint myself but she had so much talent, opportunities, money - and lost it . And after her death she put her daughter into danger to leave her with all this money. @@trevor263 How? Have you ever saw her singing without being covered by her dancing ability? Trust me, it's worse than you think.
Think we need another list. Maybe like Patsy Cline, Missy Elliott, Barbara Streisand?
They don't remember her, that's why.
One name comes to mind when I read 'Influential Women in Music' and that is Madonna, so I'm glad she's in the top 5, though I would have placed her higher for her influence on pretty much every female pop music star that came after her.
She has has no influence on anyone that can actually sing. She has inspired the ppl that can’t sing that need a gimmick

"Taylor Swift Scores 10th No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Red (Taylor's Version)' Swift becomes only the second woman with at least 10 No. 1s, following Barbra Streisand."
AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN GET A MENTION???

Celia Cruz was just Cuban, born and raised. She wasn’t American and didn’t come to us until her adulthood
Oh, and you forgot one of the most important artists of the late 80' and 90', Celine Dion.
What I wanna know is who ordered this list, because it's all over the place.
Agreed!
right 😂
agree.. im still confused why shaina, whitney cher and janet is so low..
@@kenlucena18 even Mariah Carey like...really? The one who ranked this must be DRUNK!
Right! 😂😂😂
Celine Dion always has her songs on every singing contest
It's not influential enough for you?
That’s not being influential ?? You obviously don’t know the definition/context
Madonna should be number 1 what you even taking about? Cher, Janet, Mariah should be higher. Stevie Nicks should be here.
Amen. Well said.
For me Evanescence pathed the way for Women in the modern Rock/Metal Genre
I'm glad Diana Ross is mentioned 👍
Influential women in music of all time
These three musicians really inspire me and leave such an impact to me
Reba Macentire-her music just really captures the real meanings of life. In her sitcom she cameo some of her music that really showcases the harmony so perfectly. Also gave me the strength to battle leukemia just like one of her songs I became a “Survivor”
Taylor Swift- her music really helped me battled Leukemia and became a cancer survivor.
Laurie Lewis- she’s more Americana bluegrass music that I was raised on ever since I was a child. Most importantly it’s never left me like a best friend
Kate Bush, Alanis Morissette, Edith Piaf, Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys
