- In this tutorial, we'll use a bunch of strips to make a beautiful tote bag. Join me as I show you how to make a basic tote, with a pocket inside the lining. Easy as pie!
I used strip scrap packs from Kimberley over at Etsy shop MyFabricAddiction1. She sells other fabrics, too. Be sure to check out her shop. She has scraps, precuts, and more!
Her shop can be found here, (showing direct link to the scrap pack I used in this video):

Thank you Kimberley, for the wonderful fabric strip packs!

Love love love it❤🪡🧵! Hopefully I'll be able to make this some day..
You definitely will be able to! You can always pause the video on each and every step. Take as much time as you need while building your skills 🧵🪡✂️❤️
Love this tote bag!! I just love bags! I agree…blue is not my favorite color but this bag is beautiful!! See you on Wednesday!
Lisa Marie, thanks so much! I love bags, too! I make a lot of them, so I'll probably be making quite a few in the upcoming videos. See you Wednesday. Thanks for your comment!
I recently started watching your channel & loving it! Great teaching!
Awesome! Thank you for subscribing! Welcome to my little corner of UA-cam. I’m so glad you’re here!
That is beautiful! Thanks for the clear instructions.
Hi there! I haven't seen your name before this morning so you must bee new - welcome!! I'm glad you like it and you're very welcome! I love making bags of all types, so there will be more tutorials for others in the future. Thank you for watching and for commenting!
Just taking more peeks at what I have missed. Thank you for posting this!
You're welcome! This is just a basic tote bag and I've made it in countless ways. Some with 5" scrap squares, strips, yardage and crumbs. It's one of my "go to" projects. Have a great day, Brenda!
Pretty ! 😍
Thank you, Ella! I'm totally in love with it... in other words, I may keep it, lol!
Thanks for your comment and support!
Love it, good job
Thank you so much!
I recently found your channel and have been enjoying your videos. I also applied to join your FB group. So fun. Thanks for sharing your ideas and your time and talent.
I am finally getting a chance to catch up on your earlier videos. I love this bag and plan on making some for Christmas gifts this year. I love your very clear instructions and look forward to using some of my beautiful strips to make some.
Hi Nancy! I wondered where you were, ha ha. I said to my husband last night that I have people who regularly comment and when they don’t , I begin to wonder or worry about if they’re sick or something happened. You’re one of those people. 🥰. I’m glad to see you and thank you so much for watching and commenting. Yes, this bag is a favorite of mine, too and I have made a lot (and sold a lot) of them. I have one made with squares that I have personally used for probably four years. I really need to make myself a new one. I’m going to be doing videos of other versions of this bag in future videos. We could do it with a zipper top (I know you’d love that, ha ha), but there are so many different ways to do this bag. Mostly though, I make mine in a basic manner and people love them. Take care Nancy!
@@MariesScrappyCreations I’ve been busy helping my sister get moved into a retirement community apartment very close to our house. My sewing area is a giant mess right now! But you will be surprised to know I ordered some of those pretty zippers and I think they may arrive in the mail today! You have made me brave!
Love this bag. Great tutorial again!
I’m glad you enjoyed it Janet! Thank you for stopping by to comment.
Thanks for the wonderful instructions! New subscriber here.
I'm glad you found it helpful and welcome to my channel! I have a Facebook group by the same name, "Marie scrappy creations", if you're interested in joining us. Thank you for commenting.
Im gooing to start sewing scraps together!
That is awesome! Like I said to you earlier today, you CAN do this! One project at a time and you are learning with each and every one of them.
Thank you! I am “collecting “ bag patterns and ideas.
Oh boy, me too! I LOVE bags and totes of all kinds! You’re “collecting” or are you “collecting and sewing”? I’m teasing! Thanks for watching!
@@MariesScrappyCreations I am just saving up ideas. Sewing eventually.
Beautiful!
Thank you, Mary!
❤❤❤
I really like this… wish you would show how you sew it😀.. thank you❤
Did you mean how I sewed the strips together? I'm not exactly sure what you meant. Also, I have a five part scrappy tote bag series, showing all different kinds of ways to make a tote bag. Here is the link in case you are interested and the link will take you to Part One of the 5-part series, but you should be able to find the others easily and if I remember correctly, when one video ends, it should autoplay the next - if UA-cam does its job, lol!

I want to make a longer and wider bag and I was trying to think if I could make the straps long enough to go across your body just like a cross body bag. Thank you
I would think you can make the straps as long (or short) as you'd like. Have fun!
Thank you for the tip about tacking the lining in the corners! I have made a lot of bags and could not figure out how to do that! Do you have a Facebook Group for sharing?
Hi Teresa! This bag video was one of my first tutorials after starting my channel, ha ha. 😁. Yes, I started a Facebook group not long after this video you watched was made, actually. My Facebook group is the same name as my channel, “Marie’s Scrappy Creations”. I’m glad I was able to help you with keeping your liners in your bags! I also use this method inside all my small zippered pouches, etc. I love the technique, since the lining coming out was an issue for e. This method of tacking it down certainly does the trick and best of all, it’s easy! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I wish you'd show how the lining stays in place with the tack you did. Pull the lining out once you've flipped it so we can see how the tack makes a difference.
Hi Lori! I'm sorry about that. Well, once the edges are tacked, the lining won't pull out. I guess I didn't think to show it. But, if you try to pull up on the lining, it won't come up because it's attached at the base corners. I see I have two comments of yours to reply to and I'll try to explain it as best I can. I know when I saw first saw this method, it didn't make any sense to me at all. In fact, I almost skipped it, but I'm so glad I didn't. I'll give you a link to see how it's done on a different bag, just in case you hadn't seen that one. I've used the same method in all the bags I've made so far on my channel, so maybe if you see another video, it'll make more sense.
Here is a link to another bag. It uses the exact same method to sew it, but it still doesn't show me pulling on the lining to show it staying in place. It does stay in place though, because its sewn directly to the bag at the corners. I have another bag video coming up within the next few weeks and I'll be sure to show this part. I really appreciate the feedback. This is the sort of comments that help me and I appreciate your comments. I just feel bad for any confusion.

Marie, could you make one of these totes with two pockets, but one with a zip so that those 'important things' can be out of the body of the bag?
Hi Kerry! Yes, I’ve actually made bags with zippered pockets in them. Since that was the first tote bag video that I made, I was trying to keep everything simplified and I didn’t put zippers in for that reason. I will be doing that in an upcoming video, as it’s on my list of videos I’d like to film. Thank you so much for that!
@@MariesScrappyCreations I have another question for you about making a bag like this with that shiny insulated lining that is in the cold bags from supermarkets. I am guessing it is not that difficult to make with that would it? That way the lining does not get all soggy when the freezer stuff is in the bag.
@@silverpromidi i’m glad that you asked that, because I have been wondering the same thing. I’ve made quite a few of our shopping bags, but I’m still buying those insulated cold bags. Like you say, they have that lining in them. But from what I read a few days ago when I was looking into it for myself, you can buy that stuff - whatever it’s called). So at this point, it’s on my to do list to look into what the materials are that we would need and if it’s something I can do, I will certainly make a video tutorial. Thank you so much for watching and commenting and especially for asking questions. Take care, chat soon
@@MariesScrappyCreations I am taking an insulated bag with me next week to a store here called Spotlight and ask them if they have it in stock, there has got to be a better way to make these than to buy them.
I’ve been thinking more about this since you asked and I already have “insulbrite” on hand, which is a reflective foil-type fabric. I know it will reflect heat, but I need to find out if it will reflect cold, as well. Then, I think a layer of waterproof fabric…
Have you got a scrappy purse tutorial?
Not really (or I should say not yet). This is still a bag making video and not a purse, but it shows how to sew the small pieces together

I like your videos but it would help if you gave the measurements before carrying on😊
Hi Joan! I'm sorry, is there a part that I didn't give measurements for? This was when I first started making videos, so I was really nervous as I was trying to give all the directions, etc. If there is something I could help you with, please let me know. I still have the bag, if it's the finished measurement that you're looking for. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
@@MariesScrappyCreations hi Maria I just meant if the measurements for the bag were given sooner as I write all this down and l make drawings. I love your idea of a scrappy bag will make it soon thank you for all your great videos.
@@joanrychliski5711 Thank you for your feedback! Yeah, this was when I 1st started making videos and I tend to do things a little bit differently now. Happy sewing! 🧵🪡
