Opossums are beautiful & wonderful animals. We often had them in our yard. When I was young I was afraid of them because I thought they were monsters. My grandmother explained that they eat insects that could cause us problems & they were more afraid of us; then we needed to be of them. She explained the little garden off to the side was planted for them. Now I see them as beautiful; but weirdly designed to look ghastly; but we’re beautiful!! ❤❤❤ I had an awesome grandmother. God rest her soul.
They are made to look ghastly to ward off predators. That's their primary defense mechanism.

⭐️ Sofia⭐️ While some people will say Possums that is actually slang or dialect & if you pay attention searching “possum” will correct to Opossum. Honey dear I’m over 60yo and I don’t need an incorrect correction; bless your heart.

I never knew about possums because we don't have them in South Africa, but since I found out about how many ticks they can eat per day, they have become one of my favorite animals.
You forgot the fact that they are practically immune to rabies because they have a normal body temp of 94°F(34.4°C) which is too cold for the rabies virus

I was lucky enough that my local opossums love me, they have even had me babysit while the mother takes a nap, it probably helps that I knew her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and had played with them as joeys
As a species I'd say compassion to animals is our best trait. Not everyone possesses it but this lady certainly does

These little guys are great at eating ticks and other insects. It's always good to have some in your grove.
They also arent a vector for rabies due to low internal body temp (94°F/34.4°C)

It's dumb everyone thinks they have rabies, they almost entirely can't even catch rabies let along spread it

So adorable! The runt was giving his big sisters practice at being a mum to weaned babies. You could see that their maternal instinct was there by carrying him around without problems. That's such good news for their future. Many rescued female animals in particular, especially if rescued so young, don't get to see how to be a mum. It can lead to them abandoning at least their first babies because they don't even know what they are! Only if they live in a herd and get to see older mums with their own babies will they learn, or hopefully second time around instinct kicks in. These sisters of the little boy stand a good chance of being successful mothers first time around. I hope they have happy, healthy lives and lots of babies!

They actually make great pets but if you want one as a pet please get it from a reputable breeder and don't take them from the wild

I know Possums have a bad reputation but I have always loved them and thought they were so cool! Thank you for saving these babies and the 40 others ☺️❤️
Fun fact, the opossum is almost entirely immune from rabies due to their low core body temp, so they are almost entirely incapable of spreading it unless they ate an animal with rabies just before biting another animal, they also dont bite humans on purpose, you are more likely to be bitten by a domesticated opossum than a wild one since the domesticated ones are pretty bad at differentiating fingers from snacks

Possums are really a gift because they don’t give you rabies and they eat lots of ticks and bugs and dead things, they clean up things, and eat whatever you wanna give them if you do. They usually move on I’ve seen.
I've taken care of opossums since age 11. 33 years! Thank you for being part of the circle in taking care of them. Bless you and these babies. ❤
Wildlife rehabbers are among my very favourite people. Nurturing young, sick or injured animals with the aim of returning them to the wild is a special calling.
The mothers of these babies are such dedicated hard workers to care for their babies.

Yes, you can ask a rehabber for help. They won't take it from you if you don't want. They will show you how to do it right.

I was told Our wildlife people here won’t take them formally but an individual came out and picked up the baby I found in the yard. She does this on her own. I kept him warm and gave him some formula until she came. ❤❤❤❤

They are fragile little things. They don't live long either. I've heard that they are extremely intelligent as well. I used to see them in my neighborhood and back yard, but they moved on and sadly I didn't see them any more. 😢💔.

They are such sweat creatures. During a particularly cold night, we left our garage door slightly raised & a possum took shelter in a corner & had a warm nights sleep, nibbles, & fresh water. Next day, she scurried up a tree. We provide nibbles at the garage door. Be safe live long little one....

Thank you! For being such a wonderful carer!!!!! Opossums are such wonderful animals. I love them sooo much when I was a kid we had one that would come and just chill on the trellis on our porch. I wanted to pet it but my parents told me no and why obviously now I know trying to pet a wild animal is dangerous. But it was such a sweetheart they just chilled. I loved it and what quite a fond memory!

Awesome! A few years back I removed 7 baby possums from their dead Mama's pouch and brought them to a wildlife rehabilitator. I'll never forget opening her pouch and seeing all those eyes and ears! As I gently took each one out they were hissing at me like little rattlesnakes lol!
