    I found that a telescoping painters pole works great. They give you the reach that the broom pole doesn't. I think I only spent $20 on one awhile back. Thinking about it, broom poles and painters poles are hollow on the inside so a possible DIY built in XLR is probably possible, like the K-Tek.

    Personally I use a cheap monopod for a boom pole. It collapses much smaller than the broom handle, weighs about the same, and already has a 1/4" 20 screw at the end so no drilling/tape is required. Plus it looks just enough like an actual boompole that you could pass as a professional crew to the untrained eye. You can get them for about $14-20 on Amazon.

    I wonder why all the pro sound mixers and boom operators on larger budget sets choose the expensive poles? Reach is definitely one of the reasons, but like others have said, you can use a painter's pole for the same effect. I can say that I don't usually have to worry about tapping the pole just under the mic like in your test. Rubbing hands on the pole is a more likely situation where sound will be picked up by the mic. Also, most pro mixers and boom operators have to attach more substantial wind protection (blimp covers) which would be more difficult with a broom pole. But for indie film, broom poles took the win today! Thanks Griffin!

    • @bobunitone
      @bobunitone 5 років тому +4

      If you are a professional sound mixer, the equipment will pay for itself. You also can charge a kit rental fee to the production. Also, like said in the video, one probably won't get hired back if you come to a commercial set with a broom/painter handle. Agencies reps, clients, producers, etc probably don't want to see their sound person holding a broom pole at the talent.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 5 років тому +5

      @@bobunitone Agreed. I own the K-tek in this video as well as another K-tek model with the XLR output on the bottom of the pole, partly for this very reason. No regrets spending the money and it'd be a little silly to be hired as a mixer and show up with a broom. :-D

      @SoundSpeeding 5 років тому +1

      @@simianinc if you're of the age you've already graduated from college then it is madness to be using a broom pole vs a cheap sub hundred dollar boom pole! (you don't have to go all out with a K-Tek just yet, but a hundred dollar boom pole will be in another league to a broom pole!!)

  • @marcd7307
    @marcd7307 5 років тому +5

    The reason you are hearing more noise when you tap the Ktek boompole as opposed to the broom pole, is because the KTek has the coiled cable inside the pole, which is rattling and banging against the inside, whereas the broom pole is solid and has nothing to bang. Sound is vibration, tapping, banging, or slapping creates vibrations, and those vibrations will travel around a cavity.

    I just watched this video.. I remembered back when I was doing windows I have a 20ft extendable boom pole. Just put my Deity D4 on it and it works EXTREMELY well even for aluminum. No harsh after tones and it already had styro handles on it so that helps with the moving. It's perfect! I personally don't think people other than the actual camera community really cares about what you brought to set to get the job done. Broom poles don't factor you as a professional. It means you now have the utensil to get the job done for which the RESULTS will always win over anything. I got film job using my Sony A7Rii because he liked the results, the Lens won(Tokina 28-80mm ATX Pro). The camera didn't make me professional, I did

    We bought a cheap bag of Velcro strips to aid in securing the XLR cable and prevent resultant cord noise. For us, these strips were a must have for any non-internal, wired pole whether a broom pole or an inexpensive R0de micro pole.

    I made a professional looking boom pole for about $25. I used a telescopic paint roller pole. I heated s standard mic stand head till it was pliable and I was able to butterfly it open. I formed the mic stand head to a short cut of 2" pvc,drilled holes and screwed them together. Then I cut slits in the ends of the pvc for rubber bands, painted the pvc and the screw head of the pole black, and forcefully screwed my pvc shock mount on to the pole screw head(the plastic was soft enough to form to the wrong size metal nut inside the mic stand head). Next thing to try is run the xlr through it!

    What I would do is 3D print an adapter so that you can mount the shock mount to the end of the pole rather than have it sit out to the side, that way it doesn't look so DIY.
    But what I've used previously was an extendible paint roller handle, they're fairly cheap, and still extend quite the way

  • @foddermike
    @foddermike 5 років тому

    For the broom pole, or even better an extendable painters pole (not much more in price) take a look for an old paint roller; remove the "L-shaped" metal rod and thread a screw in through the bottom of the handle up & out the hole, securing with a washer & nut. Now you have a proper mount for your shock mount mic holder and it can travel in your suitcase as part of your gear even when your cheap broom/painters pole doesn't go with you, allowing you to get one from any hardware store as you mentioned, and still keep the full functionality of the shock mount attachment ;)

    It's hard to take a test like this seriously when the tester has issues with a simple screw-lock, or considers headphones being something just for checking handling noise. But for someone very inexperienced, maybe those could be issues somehow, there's one thing that makes this test very unreliable even for a DIY-test: Always use the exact same microphone in the exact same shockmount when doing comparisons like this. Using two completely different mics WILL lead to very unreliable results. Myself, I changed from a wooden broom-handle with a screw fixed at the end through a drilled hole at the top and some chemical steel to seal the deal. Most certainly worked very well, and I still have it around, but I seriously did not miss the lack of telescopic settings nor poor grip when changing to Klassic K102 CCR. What makes the K-Tek booms so good compared to other professional booms are several things, most of which are hard to explain as they are more of a "feeling" thing like sturdiness and such, but mainly the super-reliable locking-rings. I've had mine for well over 10 years, and in service, it feels like I just bought it! K-Tek is incredibly reliable, and on set, reliability is king. (Not sponsored, just a fan)
    Other than those things, I do appreciate these videos, not least since DIY is most certainly a much better, or even great way, to start than waiting for expensive gear that might never even turn up the first place. In further videos, please mind consistency, because you do bring up a valid point: Can these things be used agony-free until you can afford the good stuff? Or for people with less professional intentions full stop?

    I really feel like boom poles are the biggest racket in the film industry. Like... I can wrap my own XLR cable around a painter's pole. Worst case, I need a couple zip ties to secure it.

      Really? Try doing it professionally then see if you can say that with a straight face.

    Hey Griffin, you _SAY_ that both the broompole and the $600 graphite boom pole are equally effective as cat toys, but I didn't see any comparison videos. Can you do a follow up where you play with your cat with the $600 boom pole for comparison? 😼

      It was a project I wrote, directed, shot, edited when I worked at State Farm in 2011. It got nearly a million views-and actually saved a lot of people from burning down their houses!-but State Farm eventually removed it from UA-cam, because I believe the contract with Shatner wasn't a perpetual license. I see someone re-uploaded a low-quality version: ua-cam.com/video/Z4Qxqmhqj1A/v-deo.html

    For a second, when I read "boom pole" I thought it was another word for a rifle... I'm going to start calling rifles "boom poles" now.

    I don't think you're being very objective at all... You compare these two boom poles from a videographers point of view, not really from a boom operators perspective.
    Portability: If you travel a lot and buy a new broomstick in each location, in time it will add up in cost, time and effort - especially if you consider the gas or other expenses to make an extra trip to a hardware store. You'll also either need to carry your drill with you or find one in each of your location. The K-Tek boompole will last decades if you take good care of it, and it's obviously much smaller than the broomstick. Even if it doesn't exactly fit in a backbag, you can put it in your tripod bag. And if you're solely a sound person, you can easily find a way to carry a small thing like that with you.
    Ease of use: If you don't like the internal cable after all, there's no need to get one :) Many people prefer external cables. Gaffers tape can help to keep the cable in place if that is your main worry. To my experience, the K-Tek grips do almost act like latches since you only need to rotate them so very little to open and close them. Also, making the boom poles the same length is not the only way to compare the two. Say you have a ultra wide shot and you need to get the boom close: the 9 ft of range is totally an advantage at that point. The K-Tek can also be adjusted shorter than the broomstick which is an advantage in very small rooms. Also, since the shock mount is pointed straight forward in the K-Tek (like it's designed), not towards the ground like on the broom stick, you have a couple of advantages: it's less effort to hold the mic higher (above the frame line), and you can adjust the angle of the shock mount more to your advantage in varying situations. You can also add more heavy duty windcovers on the K-Tek, I don't think the broomstick would be very usable at that point.
    I can see that the broom stick does have it's uses, but it really seems like a one trick pony to me, and by sheer luck it happened to be the trick that suits you. I would've loved to see a comparison between a cheap but still a purposefully designed boom pole versus the K-Tek. The broom stick is just so obviously not a very versatile piece of equipment for a sound person - much like a stool doesn't make a very good tripod for a camera operator, even though it CAN get the job done.
    I still love the idea of the cheap vs expensive things series, I just wish you'd take a more comprehensive look at the equipment and consider what each piece of equipment can or can not do. The advantage of a proper boom pole is not only that it gives you a more pro image: there are many practical benefits that apply even in indie filmmaking.
    PS. I think your boom operator form was completely fine! :D

      Good comment.
      (except their boom op form was indeed utterly terrible... not helped by the bad pole!)
