The No Man's Sky launch is what happens when you give an Indie studio the marketing budget of a triple A title (no disrespect to the game now but the launch was a trashfire) Also Elijah, where is your mic and get audicity off of the screen (bc I'm too invested in weird detail so I'm like 👀the whole time). That's facts. It was very disappointing. And I think the more they improved the game the more love they got and I think that's what kept them going even today.
@@williamweisert I didn't follow it particularly well, but I think when the marketing budget was done they just trucked along like an indie dev would and that helped rebuild trust in the community
@boubayaga_ There's actually an incredible UA-cam video that goes into the making of No Man's Sky and what went beyond behind the scenes. If was really interesting and gave me a different perspective on that team. It's 50 minutes long. I believe it was the internet historian that did the video.
I don't think it's a matter of indie vs triple A marketing budget. I think it's more of a fact that many triple A companies with massive marketing and dev budgets releasing broken and incomplete games. *cough* fallout 76, battlefield 2042, etc *cough*
you could make a whole video of this style just on cod zombies. from the multiple party modes removed in black ops 2 to the factions and challenge system removed from black ops 4
I swear to God, playing Destiny was like being in an abusive relationship. You'd keep telling yourself that you deserve better, that someday you'll leave. But you never do. So instead you try telling yourself, "He loves me deep down" or "he's going to change someday" I know what I sound like but anyone who played Destiny back then knows it's true. I'm so glad I didn't get sucked into Destiny 2
4:56 There actually was! The guy was promised 1% of royalties and went to the studio to sign the contract. He waited 12 hours… then got rushed into a room and signed a contract. Never got a dime.
Overwatch's history of lies sadly is a lot longer than just the cliffnotes of "campaign cancelled soz" It was promised that Overwatch 1 would remain, heroes would still be added to it, the main draw for OW2 was its campaign Instead: Overwatch 1 was closed the moment OW2 launched, meaning no one can play Overwatch 1 anymore It was promised that Overwatch 2 was a complete overhaul of the game Instead, we only received 3 new heroes, a few new maps, and a lot of features were actually REMOVED that Overwatch 1 did have (on fire system, medal system, the 5v5 instead of 6v6 nonsense, lootboxes that were actually decently fair, an entire gamemode was removed from the game) It was promised that Overwatch 2 would have a fully fledged campaign with tons of customization and replayability Instead, we will receive parts of the campaign that you have to pay for separately every few months even though tons of people paid full price for OW2 as it was promised that OW2 was going to be a direct sequel instead of this free to play bullshit It was promised that the ONLY reason why Overwatch 1's last 2 years were literally bone dry in terms of any updates, was because the team was SO hard at work on Overwatch 2 and its new heroes Instead, Overwatch 2 launched in "early access" WITHOUT a campaign, just the PvE aspect that was barebones as is, and a downgrade compared to Overwatch 1, meaning those years of OW1 being just completely mishandled were for nothing I literally could go on, the amount of controversy that this games has racked up makes me wonder how people still can play it or worse, support it. The amount of cope I see from players with their "no no but it will get better" even though we've been absolutely rawdogged by ActiBlizz since Brigitte released (because one thing Blizz is good at is not fixing existing issues but just completely reworking characters or adding characters to counter meta, making the existing issues much worse) is too damn high. This game shouldn't pull as many players as it does when there are so many better options that are also free. I like the characters even if they're stereotypical as fuck, but the amount of lies the players have been told and how they keep eating that shit up, only ever acting outraged but then a day later being right back into that game makes me sick.

You're absolutely right about some of us fans never forgiving bungie. I'm 30 now, not sure how old I was when That D1 bs hype video dropped but I still haven't forgiven them, especially after d2
Bungie has always been a sellout. They just happened to have a good franchise in Halo at the time to obfuscate that they've always been liars and shills.
Still hoping one day a developer takes the original vision of destiny and makes that game. It’s the reason I always wanted a destiny 3. I guess the closest thing is star citizen but it’s missing aliens, loot, and a focus on shooting.
The reason why games will never be what they promised is because of your logic right there. "I know they kinda lied and scammed people, and were nasty towards their community on every level, but maybe if they release one more 70 dollar games with a 60 dollar season pass, and paid loot boxes they just might give us the thing they originally promised. I'm sure big corporation will have my interests at heart next time. I'm sure they care about us!"
Sons of Liberty's twist served a good narrative point. A lot of the game had a sort of "you don't know what you think you do" theme to it, so to have that extend in the marketing was pretty smart. That said, I hate how people try to take that twist and extend it to things like The Last of Us 2 and Abby. Mainly because, you actually do play as Snake in a level and shoot guys and do MGS things in Sons of Liberty, and people STILL hate Riden because of the bait and switch. Using that game as an example for why we should accept Abby is just foolish.
Even though I did not get a chance to play MGS2 due to being part of the hate bandwagon for the whole switching Snake with Raiden(I have play MSG1, MSG3, and MSG4).
I dont think accepting abby is the point, but you should understand why ellie has soo much hate for joel because he misled her and abused her trust because of love like ND kinda misled its players to avoid spoilers in that sense so narratively its a hit or miss for audiences. I understand people hating it because of this, but its like a meta narrative kinda like mgs 2. And also it was always marketed as a ellie game. We did not know if we were going to play joel again and they never said you will play as him...
@@slickstar96 Firstly, I don't think what Joel did was that bad at all. For me, the game did an incredibly poor job at explaining how a guy can create a vaccine to a fungal infection. Those aren't real, and only exist in theory. I can't suspend my disbelief enough to say "Yeah, he would have created a first ever, one of a kind vaccine if it wasn't for Joel". That's asking for too much. Secondly, Accepting Abby WAS a point of the game. We were supposed to see that she had justifiable motives, but the developers forgot to make a likeable character. Some people cried about "Well, developers don't owe you likeable characters!", and while that's true, I can't get invested in a character. That's a problem when you have to play as a character. Lastly, Joel and Ellie apparently made up before he died, so that point of him abusing some trust isn't especially powerful. In the end, it seems like TLOU2's devs wanted to do ambitious things but fumbled the bag. I say that as a guy who enjoys the actual gameplay side of TLOU2. Its one of the few games I bought new on my PS4.
@@luckyducky7819 i dont believe what he did was bad either it made sense at the time but he didnt need to kill the doctor he was harmless, fireflies went about it badly, but abby doesnt know that she just knows her father is trying to find a vaccine and is willing to support him in that matter... regardless of who it may harm because she has no emotional attachment to that character its a thing that we do, we only care about ourselfs in situations like these. what i dont agree with joel is the lie and the gaslighting of ellie but can i blame him. no. It hurts because as soon as she tries to fix the love and trust that was broken it gets taken away from her so she doesnt get that time to actually mend the relationship... Im strictly talking about the marketing because they misled you in thinking joel would aid in ellie's adventure to find out that he is not, you now understand how it feels to be lied to in a similar nature to ellie and led astray and want answers its a meta narrative that works for some people and doesnt work for others... some people saw it as not wanting to spoil the story that many people were theorising all the way back in its reveal and others felt absolutely betrayed just like ellie both parties are not wrong... It does not care whether you like abby or not its telling a story just like it did not care whether you agreed with joel's decision it made you act out that decision regardless and live with it. In fact it reinforces that stance in P2 he will do it all over again... he did it out love and did not want to lose her. But everyone has their own perspective that...
@@slickstar96 The doctor wasn't harmless. He held a scalpel at Joel and would likely try to stab him if Joel just walked up and grabbed Ellie. Also, the fireflies is a terrible organization, too. The ruin so many lives trying to find an impossible cure. Also, you misunderstood my point a bit. I wasn't expecting to play Joel, in fact I assume he'd die in the sequel. I'm talking about the switch from Ellie to Abby and how people compare that to the switch from Snake to Raiden. People compare the Snake switch to switching to Abby, but I didn't mean to imply I thought we'd play as Joel. Over all, my point is people incorrectly compare The Last of Us to Metal Gear, and they forget that there's an amount of people who still don't like Raiden. So, when people use MGS as a way to say "But you liked that, so why not this?!" I think they're missing a lot of nuance.
In cyberpunks defense fans were sending death threats to the devs to realese the game early and devs were pressured to cut ALOT of content due to time constraints.
Cyberpunk also ditched the updates after launch and left it open source so users players could fix it. We made it better, then they dropped the update months later. Pretty much definition of unfinished game.
As I've gotten older, I get the idea of previews at E3 being "technical demos," where the deva are essentially testing what they would want to do, and then scaling it back for consoles n stuff. As a marketing thIng, it's the most bone-headed move to use it as a teaser, especially since they would make gameplay look so much crazier than the actual release

A cool one I really love is Shadow Hearts 2's marketing. The trailers showcased the new protagonist of that game and the new party members. The trailer had shots of battles and scenes that take place far into the game with that new protag. Finally, game releases, you play as that "New protagonist" for one tutorial dungeon and then he turns out to be one of the main villains at the end of it. Love it
The thing is, for No Mans Sky and Cyberpunk2077, the developers actually intended to have thoes features and fully believed they could achieve it. In the end corporate greed caused the games to be rushed out without giving the devs more time and funding to give a product that was promised.
It wasnt intended, they have to fulfill those features they falsely marketed to the public or get sued to the ground by their investors. Cyberpunk2077 was even more egregious then No Man Sky because no one ask them to lied about the PS4 version of the game.
@@DaDonBossManthe "fan base" has nothing to do with that. No fan forced them to release the game in that state. The soulless corporate creatures are the ones to blame for that whole fiasco, as it is 99% of the time.
How CoD BO3 didn’t make the list is beyond me…. They specifically said all loot boxes would be cosmetic only. And then 2 weeks later they started dropping melee weapons and then guns into them. The messed up thing is What's Inside the Cube could've been neat. How many video games have ARG aspects? Then 1st person to solve it gets a big fat pat on the back and nothing else? How cool would it be to have a simple companion game, like Curiosity, tied to your favorite game. Where every so often it asks for the answers to riddles left in secret places in the game. 1st person to beat it gets something in game. They don't have to say what it is till you beat it, but be it an NPC, exclusive one off skin or weapon, would be dope. Honestly think a lot of Live Service Games, are missing out on stuff like that. Put some Dev time in to those instead of hiring more neuro scientists to figure out the best way to scam people out of money. Actual player retention more than just FoMo.
When I was like don't 100% trust Ubisoft's gameplay trailer for their new Star Wars game, people was like "didn't you watch the video?" Ubisoft always uses scripted "gameplay" trailers and people still fall for it.

I can wholly forgive dead island for the cinematic trailer because the original game was one of my favorites and most played games of all time. dead island 2, on the other hand, missed some beats for sure
Eh, I think Dead Island 2 is a much better game. Plays into the campiness and the gore system is top tier. Dead Island 1 and Riptide took itself way too seriously when the story wasn't even that good. Interactivity in the first game and Riptide was also not as good as Dead Island 2. Dead Island 2 just has so much detail when it comes to maiming zombies and other miscellaneous physics that make it a huge improvement over Dead Island 1

This is from mentioning Ubisoft…trying to say Ubisoft is bait and switching players just cause some foliage, textures/graphics, and animations weren’t in the final game when they were in the trailer is not misleading players. Things change from when the gameplay trailer was rendered to when the game goes gold. The same exact things happen to movie trailers. Either overestimating a consoles computing power, graphics cards, or just simply someone’s vision for a particular section changed. “Missing” animations is really a dumb thing to claim as a bait and switch. Though over promising like “The Division” is a bait and switch. Or when people started to complain about missing puddles from Spider-Man ps4 is just ridiculous.
There's an overwhelming amount of destiny fans that denied the "go anywhere" concept was promised. The scale of that game was absolutely massive when preorders were taken.
another thing about The Day Before is that Data miners found out that the vast majority of everything in the game was assets they bought online. This was an asset flip scam they made in a few weeks at most

This only enforces why i dont get onto hype trains these days Too many times this stuff had happened. Ill wait for full on releases and reviews before i get excited anymore
Hype trains have a poor history in the efficiency department. The ticket price is always too high, they never run on schedule and a lot of them either don't make them to the destination or take a detour to the worst possible station.
Even then, many reviews are just woke shills who will trash a good game because of "muh representation" or cream their pants because of DEI even though the game is total garbage.
God DAMN even as a kid Peter Molyneux pissed me off when Fable 2 was coming out! What mistakes?! Fable 1 was awesome and I KNEW he couldn't deliver all that shit he was promising!

32:17 Cyberpunk 2077 *DID NOT* make a No Man's Sky style comeback. Even if the game launched with no bugs, it was still missing like 3/4 of the content they said the game would have. The game was released in December, and all throughout September, October, and November the CEO of CDPR was doing around giving interviews to game websites talking about features in the game that he would have known did not actually exist. Unlike Hello Games and No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk 2077 is *still* missing most of that content. Hello Game's owned up to their screw up and worked for years to put out *FREE* updates to add the content they had promised to make things right. On the other hand, CDPR put out a few patches to make the game a little more playable and put out tiny bits of content at the same time (a few more relationship cutscenes, some outfits, and a couple apartments that are pretty pointless), and then put out *PAID* DLC for their unfinished game that people were dumb enough to buy. CDPR is dead. The Witcher 3 being a great and beloved game was nothing more than a fluke. I'd rather play The Witcher 3 1000 times than ever touch anything else CDPR unless it's in the dollar bin at Goodwill.

AC Unity still has it's fair share of issues. One of my favorite bugs to watch is when the bodies twerk/freak out. Or guards just not responding to someone being assassinated DIRECTLY (literally an inch or so from the other guard) behind them or next to them. Connection online is still eh. It works. That's all I can say lol. One of my vids had a few clips of the issues AC Unity still has. But it has indeed been fixed to a more stable and playable state lol.

Being a Overwatch player and passing through the journey from Ow to Ow2 was seeing one of the most embarrassing paths a big game ever went through. Almost two years playing an abandoned game waiting for it’s big “sequel” to then be rewarded with a glorified rework, tons of new microtransactions to take the fun out of winning skins, and the bonus wait for the promised campaign that would be the only reason for Ow2 to exist….. for it to be cancelled and replaced with little generic paid missions.
My biggest issue with Starfield on console is that after 200 hours of playtime the performance just... gets worse, I feel lucky if I get a stable 30 fps in the main city. Though this was the launch version without the new patches that claim to have improved performance.
Fable doesn't own the rights to naming maps Albion, there are a thousand games out there with maps called that and an entire game just called Albion lol
When they said MW3 (2023) would be the first sequel I think they meant that there’s a sequel back to back. Each COD has a bunch of developers taking turns so the OG MW2 didn’t come out immediately after the OG MW. So for the first time we get MW2 and MW3 back to back.
Bethesda for me, The fact this company has the history that they do and consistently package and sell unfinished games is painful to see. Thank god for Mod support
I don't know a single person who liked the 5v5 in overwatch. I see people say it here and there on the internet, but one of the major reasons people quit in MY social circle, was 5v5. Couldn't give a fuck about pve
From what I understand, the mw3 sequel thing is that there wasn't a game in between the the two so they're trying to brag about that for some reason lol
I was one of those Halo fans that gave Destiny a good shot, but all Destiny 1 at launch just ruined it all for me. I've been cynical towards every game since.
Listening to the Music of the Spheres, exploring the cut content in the engine, looking st the concept art, and comparing TTK from Staten’s story notes makes my heart sink. You can see the clear vision, the linear story, and carefully crafted delivery. And you can see parts of what was butchered and how it was recycled in the retail game. Bungie has been recycling ever since. They tell the same story but more convoluted, poorly explained, and lame in many ways. Some examples being the Traveler’s relationship to the Darkness. Rasputin’s character arc. Cayde’s death. The Hive’s war against the Tower. The Vex’s connection to humanity and the Darkness. Now the folded universe, dimensions, and timelines inside the Traveler and the Witness’ dumd attempt at finality and rescue op.
Developers, for the most part, do not intentionally try to mislead their customers. Modern titles require so much more resources and time compared to games two decades ago. Also, when developing with a new game engine, the learning curve can massively soak up development time. I also agree how games may change during development as well, which can produce something very different as a finished product compared to the original plan. Individuals such as Peter Molineux, are very misleading, and quite dishonest, but most developing teams do attempt to create what they promised; however, new promised concepts are not always possible on available technology and hardware. Remember that an affordable Indie title today, was considered a AAA not too long ago.
Not to mention that the developers are never the ones who decide on advertising, thats the publisher. Great example is Killzone 2. That infamous "gameplay" trailer was an in- house "Dream Goal" for what they wanted the experience to be, then someone at Sony saw it and thought it would be a fantastic way to hype the PS3's launch. The developers were actually *extremely* pissed off at Sony and they left E3 because they knew they could never actually hit those standards. A lot of the time, it isnt the devs who deceive. Its those above them who make these dumbass decisions. Edit: Just hit that point in the video lol, glad he mentioned it, but the developers directly stated it was never meant to be shown to the public. It was never supposed to be an advertisement.
I love how it's just okay to scam in video games now and, "Fix," it later. Even though they legally have to because they would get sued, but people pretend that No Man's Sky did it for the good of the players because they felt bad (Game still doesn't have everything they promised it would regardless). People were literally praising them because they updated the game for free. That would be like if I asked to borrow 20 dollars and pay you back tomorrow, then come back 6 months later with 15 dollars, and you thanked me for not charging you 10 dollars to pay back the 20 dollars. The reality is they had to scam people to even get the money for the development team to fix the game, or else it wouldn't have happened. Fast-forward to now and they announced a new game that is similar to No Man's Sky that is using a tech demo to pass off gameplay... again

Also Elijah, where is your mic and get audicity off of the screen (bc I'm too invested in weird detail so I'm like 👀the whole time). And I'm loving this format :)
Bye.
4:56 There actually was! The guy was promised 1% of royalties and went to the studio to sign the contract. He waited 12 hours… then got rushed into a room and signed a contract. Never got a dime.
Overwatch's history of lies sadly is a lot longer than just the cliffnotes of "campaign cancelled soz"
It was promised that Overwatch 1 would remain, heroes would still be added to it, the main draw for OW2 was its campaign
Instead: Overwatch 1 was closed the moment OW2 launched, meaning no one can play Overwatch 1 anymore
It was promised that Overwatch 2 was a complete overhaul of the game
Instead, we only received 3 new heroes, a few new maps, and a lot of features were actually REMOVED that Overwatch 1 did have (on fire system, medal system, the 5v5 instead of 6v6 nonsense, lootboxes that were actually decently fair, an entire gamemode was removed from the game)
It was promised that Overwatch 2 would have a fully fledged campaign with tons of customization and replayability
Instead, we will receive parts of the campaign that you have to pay for separately every few months even though tons of people paid full price for OW2 as it was promised that OW2 was going to be a direct sequel instead of this free to play bullshit
It was promised that the ONLY reason why Overwatch 1's last 2 years were literally bone dry in terms of any updates, was because the team was SO hard at work on Overwatch 2 and its new heroes
Instead, Overwatch 2 launched in "early access" WITHOUT a campaign, just the PvE aspect that was barebones as is, and a downgrade compared to Overwatch 1, meaning those years of OW1 being just completely mishandled were for nothing
I literally could go on, the amount of controversy that this games has racked up makes me wonder how people still can play it or worse, support it.
I'm over here watching all this go down like.....this is legal? They can just....wow.
Yeah the fucking upper assholes had completely fucked things over but the game itself is still good.

I never liked how Halo 5 was 90% Locke
And 10% Chief
It was little less egregious. More like 70:30 or 80:20
On top of that, the way they wrote it and advertised it that portrayed the Chief as some sort of villain really rubbed me the wrong way.
“Corporate greed” has nothing to do with No Man’s Sky. The studio was flooded, you can use that as an excuse. But they’re a small independent studio.

Being a Overwatch player and passing through the journey from Ow to Ow2 was seeing one of the most embarrassing paths a big game ever went through. Multiple games named Albion, actually.
When they said MW3 (2023) would be the first sequel I think they meant that there’s a sequel back to back. Each COD has a bunch of developers taking turns so the OG MW2 didn’t come out immediately after the OG MW. So for the first time we get MW2 and MW3 back to back.
