I have knit so many sweaters and dresses and i always block part way through a project, often a number of times as i work my way through the project. I want to make sure i like the neckline, the armscye length, the fit, the sleeve and body length. Knitting often grows with washing, sometimes due to being superwash and sometimes just the weight of the fabric pulling down. It is really hard to keep knitting on a project if you are unsure you will be happy with it at the end. Peace of mind makes it a great idea. I always block on the needles (I knit it off onto a long circular) and i dont bother cutting the yarn as i just squeeze out a lot of excess water in towels. It really is worth it. Looking forward to seeing how it finishes up. Glad you got some peace of mind through blocking mid-way.

I really like the button up shirt you're wearing in this one! Definitely feeling the warm weather shift in projects. The pollen here in Virginia is intense in spring! Everything is coated in pollen. When it rains the puddles are yellow. Yay for allergies.
I love to do cross stitch kits where the cloth is marked with a water soluble dye. It scratches the coloring paint-by-number feel, but also embroidery tactile textures.
    Anyways, thanks for the podcast!

Feel compelled to comment to compliment you for taking the time you need to hit reset. I am so grateful for all that you give. Both the content and the cheerful and humble way it is delivered are deeply appreciated and enjoyed. As a semi-burned-out family doc who is the geriatric parent of a 7yo hockey player, knitting is my color by numbers. Once yarn is picked and swatching works, I can follow a pattern and listen to a podcast and not have to think (much). When I have energy for more creative pursuits, I quilt and make bags and have even challenged myself to make a garment - the nocturne pajama pants course from Sew Liberated is helping me overcome my qualms in that dept.
Here in Maine, I am grateful that the LONG hockey season ended at the end of March. Most rinks are too cold to knit in!

About Strings looks lovely. I have been looking for this type of yarn for a summer project. I did shoot them a quick message and thought I would share their very quick response that the merino used in this yarn is mulesing free. Thanks for sharing the source for this. I blocked mid project for the Birch Sweater by Andrea Mowry- fisherman's rib and super wash yarn made me nervous for sizing - and so glad I did! Grew a lot and I could see where I started knitting again for sure, but after a final block it's not noticeable at all

Loved seeing a chat on all your WIP’s. My opinion with trying on garments is to do it often during the knit. Especially if it’s top down. (A bit more difficult and not quite so accurate bottom up) blocking helps get a better indication of where the finished garment will fall and the more you’ve done the better it will tell the story. Maybe check your husbands frankensweater again when you’re a few cm past the underarms. This will give you the best indication. And the lines between blocked and unblocked sections will disappear when you do the final blocking.
You could also slightly stretch the neckband during a block if it’s still not sitting where you want it.
    Enjoy the process 💚

  • @sarahjim5540
    @sarahjim5540 Рік тому

    Hi Tayler!
Regarding the sweater you're making for your husband, I think the yarn fiber and construction might come into play with how blocking midway will inform how the final product might behave.
The yarn you're using is a 100% rambouillet 2-ply sport weight yarn. Rambouillet naturally has a higher crimp than it's merino cousin, and this creates more memory or "spring" in the fibers themselves. The 2-ply construction is oval shaped, with plies that want to roll away from each other due to the plying process. This fiber and ply combination, however, tends to create a fairly light yarn that doesn't really weigh the garment down. Rambouillet is typically known for being light and bouncy when knit up, and you're using sport weight at that.
I think both the fiber and construction here mean that this yarn would be able to take an aggressive blocking and open up width-wise quite nicely.
Since you don't have much of the yoke completed right now, I'd continue knitting until about 2-3 inches below the split for sleeves before blocking again. This time, though, I'd block it at the collar using pins and mats a little wider than the measurement you're looking for. After undoing the pins, the ribbing will likely constrict a bit.
The weight of the sweater probably won't be enough to drag the stitches open as much as your Frankensweater because rambouillet performs very differently compared to the worsted weight fisherman's wool/sport weight suri silk combo you used before. This will probably hold true even though your husband's sweater will be longer than the one you made for yourself.
Good luck! I think you've got this!

  • @misha76
    @misha76 Рік тому +1

Thanks Tayler for another lovely episode! I always block my sweaters mid way thru and like to put my stitches on a barber cord or waste yarn just to get it off the needles so the stitches can do their thing while soaking. Another thing I have been finding myself doing lately is that I will provisionally cast on stitches (say if the sweater is knit top down) for the number *after* the initial neckline stitches and then later work those provisional stitches however I see fit. It just gives more flexibility to be able to play with how you want the neck to look. As always, it's always great to see what you're up to and I wish you all the best!

I wondered if this would be a good idea as well! I’m just not smart enough (until now) to know exactly how to do it. No issues with partial pre-blocking. Every time the yarn is wetted, it relaxes and “forgets” the prior shape. Then you reshape it into the new fabric.

    Ah! The t-shirt problem.
Perhaps everybody is trying right now to make the perfect tee?
I have inherited cotton yarn, my home is where other knitters and yarn collectors send their yarn to ... resurrect?
So I thought, I should turn some of it into a nice tee, a shortsleeved summer jumper, nonsweaty sweater ...
So I started improvising a roundyoke ... and looked at patterns. Realised I wanted the Poppy ... some practical problems there. Was reminded of the Flax, there is a Flax light, so I decided some leftover and gifted Drops Delight would be the perfect yarn to test this.
Fixing the neck, shaping the body, but somehow I mixed yarns that made it more like autumn than summerish, so now I think it will have 3/4 sleeves ... I wanted something sort of warm but the sleeves out of the way when I do dishes and such ...
But I have even more of the yarn, so maybe I will do another that is mauve and pink, lilac, with short sleeves. Or summer blue. Or I will add some new yarn to finish it. You always seem to need more yarn to finish off the old ...
Then I will do the cotton version. Maybe.
But I have run into so many Cumulus, and other knitted tees looking for "how to knit my tee", and videos of what pattern is the pattern, while I look for ideas.

I have blocking-phobia so I've never attempted blocking part way thru any knit or crochet project. 😱
I finally finished a crocheted granny hoodie - probably close to 5 years in the making due to yarn shortages, the dreaded square joining and blocking. Figured out I joined too tightly so I had to rejoin all the squares for it to lie flat and accept blocking properly - cotton and bamboo blend. Just in time for spring.
Never thought of colourway by number as calming. If I get stuck on a project, I crochet up some dishcloths... very much a mindless item in my books.

Thanks for the, as always, informative podcast! A couple things in response to what you discussed: I've blocked a garment halfway through (I knit the sleeves and wanted to see what their blocked length would be and then went back to knit the body) and there was no noticeable difference from where I first blocked and began knitting again (after final blocking of the entire garment of course!). And I love Eri Shimuzu's patterns! I knit the Flores a couple years ago and loved the knitting process as well as the finished object. I also made the Merengue cardigan which uses the same stitch as the Flores. I talk a bit about it in my most recent episode and I can't sing Eri's praises enough, her pattern writing is genius!

Hi Tayler. I block while knitting all the time, sometimes more than once. Sometimes it's a wet block, sometimes just a quick steam block depending on what question I'm trying to answer. Since I always wash and block after finishing there's no difference in the end if you block mid-way - everything evens out. The only time you may see a difference is with a yarn like Holst Supersoft that has spinning oils in it. I find it takes a couple washes to really fully bloom so if you wet blocked it at different stages you might see more blooming in the areas that have been washed more. But a really good soak should avoid that.

Hi Tayler: I think you'd get a better sense of fit (after mid-process blocking) if you took the garment off the needles while it dries/sets because the stithces are limited to some extent by their positioning on the needles. In fact, sometimes I pin-block (not always, and not aggressively) to get a better sense of the yoke still. FWIW, I've been a mid-process blocker (that sounds weird 🙂) for a long time and I totally think it's worth doing if you have any concerns about fit going forward. I've ripped back on occasion cuz I can see it's just not what I'm going for. And after you've done it a few times you can get a good sense of how the weight of the rest of the sweater will impact fit. I tend to try it on again after split for sleeves, just to confirm things are working as I'd like. I've also blocked after split for sleeves, a second time, but that's a rare necessity. Oh - and you won't have any distinction between the pre-blocked segment and the rest of the garment when you do your final blocking.

When I tried on the sweater before blocking it, I felt like the neckline was way too tight and like strangling me. I blocked it and it opened up enough for me to decide to continue. When the entire sweater was finished the weight helped the neckline sit a bit lower and open it even more.

Blocking before you are finished is a great way to check actual gauge as well, because a swatch can lie because it acts differently than a whole sweater. Love the T-shirt you are working on currently. It is lovely.
Glad to hear you talk about coloring. As a teacher it is one of the most relaxing things I have my students do. I have cards on copy paper for my students. They adore coloring the page, cutting out the card and then writing a message inside. Honestly, they would probably do this activity for 30+ minutes everyday if permitted. It is so sweet to watch my little friends color and shoot the breeze with their friends.

Corinne of The Woolly Thistle has made me a convert to the idea of blocking WIPs, especially sweaters, part way through, to check the gauge and the fit. When she holds up a partial sweater that she's blocked and then knitted some more onto, often you can actually see the line in the fabric at the boundary, it makes so much difference. I'm just wondering, if you're using needles that you don't want to get wet, if steam blocking would have the same effect (the wet cloth/hot iron method). I like to use wood and bamboo needles a lot, and there's no way I'm getting those wet! I'll have to try it and find out.

I think you should knit the new sweater in the solid rust color. It's just so beautiful, why dilute it. I have got a ton of color books and colored pencils and crayons and ink pins and I can spend a whole day just coloring one picture. It is meditative to me. I loose my self. I quit thinking. I am present in getting the color the right depth. It's just a super way to check out of everything and create. I'll have to get a color by numbers one and give that a try too. There is a reason there are so many adult style coloring books and supplies out there now. It's very popular. My other thing I do that takes me out of my self and relaxes me is hours of reading. I read mysteries, romance, biographies, true life, I love funny stories and heart warming stories with happy endings. I've collected so many books from authors I've fell in love with. Like the Into The Wilderness series by Sara Donati. Or the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, or The Discovery Of Witches series. I love J A Jance, and James Lee Burke, and Craig Johnson, Darynda Jones. So many of them. I have even read the whole series of Lonesome Dove. About 5 years ago I quit watching tv completely. I found it stressed me out. Too many commercials, too many politics, just too much stress. I watch some things on Netflix because it's my choice. I watch podcast from people like you, with common interests and it gives me a direction forward. Thank you for sharing all of your loves, because it really does help.

Hello - new subscriber here. Love your channel! You have such great content and I really appreciate everything you share. I especially love that you mentioned color-by-numbers in this episode! I've done that for years for the exact reasons you mentioned: it's super low-touch stress relief and fun to see the color palette emerge. I also have an abundance of pens/pencils and have lots of fun finding the right colors (or occasionally improvising my own). My swatch pages look just like yours lol 😀
And thank you for all the knitting tidbits. I'm definitely going to try pre-blocking the next time I get concerned about how something might fit. I think you are spot-on that the weight of the sweater will pull the neckline out a little further and end up landing where you want it to. I'm an apparel pattern maker by profession and I often have to make those educated guesses when things are uncertain. Trust your gut, right?! Excited to see the final results!

Love all the workis in progress! I'm spinning up the yarn for a sweater for my husband right now and can't wait to share in your knit along! I loved the share about colouring especially, I do the same with cross stitch when I need something mindless and really enjoy the complete lack of thought while still getting to do something with my hands and watching beautiful colours make something special, thank you for putting that feeling into words!

Happy Easter! I’ve pre-blocked mid-sweater on a Le Pouf sweater because I wanted to check the shoulders and arm holes. It was interesting when I picked the stitches back up and worked from that point because, yes, you could tell where the blocked section ended and the fresh section began. Granted, I could tell, someone else may not have. However, that said, after the final blocking, there was absolutely no telling where that section was.

I preblocked once and never again because i could see the line where i resumed after blocked even though I blocked again after I was done. I would just start the garment over with a bit looser gauge. I wish you the best on that sweater. Maybe because its black the pre and post knitting wont be discernible.

Happy Easter/Sunday/Spring! Your hair is really growing out. Love hearing the thought process on your projects. You are a brave one to knit black yarns! I saw a meme that said "If I knit for you, I like you. If I knit in black for you, I love you." Truth there! The Flores sweater speaks to me more than the striped one from PetiteKnits. I love to color and had no idea they had color by number! Will definitely have to check that out! I have a few grownup color books (saying adult color books makes me think of x-rated🤭) and I have enjoyed coloring since I was a kid. It's a fun outlet! Thanks for a great podcast!

Happy Easter to you and your beautiful family. Great podcast today as usual. I am intimidated to try my own sweater since I haven’t really knit a successful sweater from a designer. I love your adventurous spirit. I think the coloring is a great de- stress idea and I’m so glad it works for you. I love to just lie down and rest in my thoughts. I don’t really sleep or maybe I do and don’t know it but it is a favorite thing to do. Of course, I’m 75 so I don’t think it’s always the best thing for me - I need to keep moving to keep my body fit. You seem very high energy and I can understand how that could wear you out. Understandably, you need to rest and back off at times. Good for you to recognize it ❤

Thank you for the coloring suggestion. I have LE (knitters elbow) and have to totally take a break from knitting, crocheting, and cross stitch to give it some time to heal and I am approaching the point of desperation for something to calm me down. I totally forgot how coloring can do that. The next time I feel like UGH I HAVE NO OUTLET I'm getting out my box of crayons and a coloring book.
