- Getting to Tokelau is not easy, the country doesn't have an airport so you have to jump through a few hoops to get there. In this video Sam and Andrew travel from New Caledonia through Apia, Samoa to the country of Tokelau, one of the smallest, most remote and most special countries on earth. Unless you like 60 hour boat rides and the fast and the furious 6, then this vid is probably the best way to experience what we went through to get to this amazing country. Why do it yourself when we edited it all down into a 7 minute clip?
This is the first part of a series of videos showing how to get to Tokelau, the popping and fly fishing there, and what life is like on the island.
If you like it, let us know and we'll film more videos like this from other amazing places in the Pacific.
Just by watching this video makes me sooo happy.. I haven't been home for the longest. Thanks for the video guys 💙
No problem, we hope we did your beautiful country justice! We hope you have a chance to go home for a visit some day soon! When we made this video we were really hoping Tokelaun people would like it, and so all the lovely comments from the Tokelaun community have been a blessing. We'll try and upload one or two more videos from the footage we took 👍
I was thinking about it! 👍 if you head to our channel we do have a couple of videos of the fishing in Tokelau there, and we might do one more later on 👍
Great vid guys, glad you liked our little island and yummy fish 😂👌🏽🇹🇰
Thanks for taking the time to leave us a comment! It's a beautiful place, I hope to go back one day! The fish are super yummy, I ate a lot of flying fish the two weeks we were there!
I love the “is that our boat? Nah that’s a car boat” 🤣🤣 when I explain to people how we get home they are always surprised!!
Everytime I tell people I'm Mexican, Samoan and Tokelau they're always perplexed by the mix lol. Usually cause they've never heard of any of them other than Mexico lol. Love to see y'all branching out to the deep south to show it some love!🙏🤙🥰
Mexico and Tokelau are two of my favourite places! How did you end up with such a cool mix of ancestors?
Omg! Exact same mix as me. I’d love to see if we look similar LOL :)
ooo yes relatable, im senegalese, iniut and moldovan haha
Awesome job guys, I’m off to Tokelau next year and i can’t wait - although the boat trip scares me lol
Thanks! Don't be too scared of the boat, it's worth it. If you can get the direct boat to your Atoll then it's only 25-30 hours and you can easily sleep 15-20 of that. Unfortunately we both had 60 hour trips both ways. Andrew gave up coffee on the boat on the way there and it knocked him out good haha!
We'd also suggest taking dry snacks, sea sick meds and a USB key with some movies on it for the boat ride... and suncream, kikomen soy sauce and breakfast cereal for your time on the island. Enjoy Tokelau, it's an amazing place!
How was it?
Nice guys I hope you enjoyed Tokelau my home land which iv never been before but hopefully soon in the near future nice video guys 😁👍
We loved every minute of our time in Tokelau, it's a unique place. If you have family there I hope you can make it for a visit, eat some traditional food and just soak in a bit of island time with your relatives 👍
Great video guys, really fun video. Would like to see more of your guys content 🤙
Thanks! We'll do our best to pump some more out!
THANKS GUYS, I was just looking at smallest countries on the Internet and happened to find TOKELAU. WOW!!! didn't realize how hard to get to. Be Positive and Be Kind Also. NICE WORK.
Thanks bobby, glad you liked it!
Omgosh watching your vid clip takes me back to my first trip to my parents homeland.... as beautiful & amazing it was being there I couldn't wait to get off the island.... didn't have much to do but the usual work that women have to do... my husband on the other hand had the time of his life and totally enjoyed the whole experience.... he did everything from fishing to hanging out with the locals... I'm glad you'se got to enjoy this experience being in Tokelau 🇹🇰👍🏾✌🏾🙂
Yes, it's definitely very different for men and women, which atoll were you on? Did you get out to the outer motus? After work and on weekends we didn't have a lot to do other than fishing and chatting to our friends from the island, but we love that so it was ok. Our friends were saying that the main things people do for fun are swimming, dancing, fishing and playing cricket. I feel lucky to have been there twice and see such a unique place, people and culture.
Lolz, thats definitely is the LIFE in Tokelau, relax eat, swim, play cricket, or touch rugby... I told myself after the end of my first trip there that I wasnt going back... funny thing is I ended up going back 3 more times... it still never got any better for me...🤦🏽♀️😩 but it was enjoyable while it lasted I suppose. I visited all three atolls but stayed mainly on Fakaofo. The husband is planning to go back for good, I on the other hand will help him pack 😊✌🏾👍🏾🇹🇰💯
Funny thing is my family & I thought I'd get use to eating fish while I was there... lolz never ate fish or did I want to try...🤦🏽♀️🐟🐠🦈🦞🦐🦑🦀🌴☀️
I’m toke and aboriginal and I’m so proud cuhh😤
You should be! What a great mix!
@@SlowriseFishing appreciate the vid brother

Thanks, glad you liked it 👍
Beautiful Tokelau. Thanks
No problem :) glad you liked it!
One of the only countries in the world where every citizen can say the know the president personally and could have dinner with the president like it a casual family day meeting.
Isn’t it part of New Zealand?
looking forward to see how th fishing went :)
coming soon :)
Hope you enjoyed Tokelau 😊😊
We both loved it! We got a chance to go to the outer motus in Nukunonu and Fakaofo, which were really beautiful. It's a really unique and beautiful country. We'll put up a couple of other videos in the coming weeks.
hey you should come to atafu someday you might find me there too lol
More please 😁😁
We have at least two more Tokelau videos to come, and they are 80% done, so the wait shouldn't be too long! Glad you liked it!
Thanks for sharing man.
Hey lads seems well put one , love the video tho am planing to head to Fiji then to Apia Samoa for few weeks break I might even do Tokelau seems worth it !!!! But I would like more explanation regarding any visa needed in advance looking foreword for answer please did ye have to present any passport or visa etc ??? Cheers Xxx
Hey! Sorry, UA-cam had buried this in spam. Tokelau is a great place to visit, just be aware the boat schedule can vary without warning, so if you're on a tight deadline then you might end up in trouble. I think you can apply for a tourist visa at the Tokelau office in Apia, and it's a fairly straightforward process. This was done for us by the people who invited us to come to Tokelau. Hope this helps!
Also.... BIG news is that they might be getting an airport! I would say that flights are still years away though, it is not easy to just build an airport and start planes flying, let alone customs and immigration rules etc.
my mum took me and my brother there to get our skin cut when I was ten. I had to stay awake the whole time lol then my uncle drove me home on a fkn quad bike😂😂memories😂
They used to have a lot of golf carts, but now they have a few cars. Honestly quads and golf carts make way more sense. Would be a fun place if you are 10!
@@SlowriseFishing yeah true lol they even got Harleys 😂
As a Tokelauan I can confirm that we have baby sharks😂
Tokelau is gonna get an airstrip soon , vlog the air travel to tokelau also !
I had heard that was happening, definitely going to vlog it if I get the chance! Hopefully flights are not super expensive so that Tokelaun people can take advantage of it when they need to travel!
You seem pretty cool bro, with a real positive attitude to try and get the most out of your trip on the crest of a submerged aquatic mountain. As for sour Sam, meh...lol. Manuia te malaga nī!
Thanks bro! We both work closely with our colleagues living in Tokelau and we feel very lucky to have been able to visit. Go easy on Sam, he gets a bit seasick hehe!
I’m from Tokelau 🇹🇰
You have an amazing country!
Is the only way to get to Tokelau by boat from Samoa? There’s no plans that fly there?
For now, you have to go by boat from Samoa, there are no planes. They are talking about building an airport, but it would be years away from being operational if they start the project now.
wOah is this the country from moana
I've been to nearly all the Pacific countries and this one culturally reminds me most of Moana. Though geologically Moana lived on a rocky island like you find in French Polynesia, so maybe they took some inspiration from a few places!
what sort of work were guys doing there apart from fishing ?
We were training some fisheries data collectors to sample small boat fish catch. Basically work 8-4 and then walk 50m from the offixe to the GT ledge and cast for an hour or two after work. Caught 2 GTs and some other bits and pieces. It's a great place.
What ship that takes y'all to Tokelau? And how much the cost of the trip (round trip or maybe one way)? i am a bit curious about it
Not too sure of the name, there are two ships that go - a passenger vessel and a cargo/fuel boat that has a couple of berths for passengers. The boats leave once every 2 weeks or so and have to be booked via an agent in Apia. You may also need a visa. The whole country is totally locked down right now because of covid, of course.
The ship is the Mataliki. Return trip is NZ$286.
Up the 690'Z 🇹🇰💙💛 #tokelauforlife 💙💛
👍👍❤
🇹🇰
How can I go to this country??
It's impossible
It is really hard to go there!
Islas del Pacífico Polinesia paradisíacas y autosostenible por enegia solar 100 por ciento
Put a longer video please, thank you 🙏
What would you like to see? Happy to answer any questions in the comments too, of course!
Details details details like traditions, food culture , prices or just longer videos of the place
Ok well firstly we have a couple of other videos up from the island, but they're mostly about fishing - one of the important things you have to do in Tokelau to get food. The traditions are very old school and unique Polynesian culture. There's a group of elders that makes decisions for each atoll and only 3 atolls in the country. They are often quite conservative in terms of the preservation of their culture and values. They have an amazing culture and they want it to persist. Tokelauans are amazing dancers, canoe builders, navigators, shell sculptors and fishermen. They only live on one of the motus of the atoll (except in Fakaofo where they live on two) and the rest are gardens and leisure areas. They have relatively nice houses considering how hard it is to get building materials there, but no hot water, no hosital, no restaurants or hotels and only one shop.
The best would be to ask a Tokelauan about their wonderful country, they know a lot more about it than I do! I might see what unused footage I have and put something up, but plenty of Tokelauans also have clips up. Some of the best ones are people who live in New Zealand finally going home to Tokelau and they show you around.
Check them out!
@@SlowriseFishing THANK YOU!!!!!!
Great video but it’s part of New Zealand
Thanks! While both New Zealand and Tokelau refer to Tokelau as a nation, you're technically correct - it's an overseas territory of New Zealand.
That's my country and there r 5 places making a circle
60 hours ? bloody hell I'll never take that 😂
I think the most remote place is Tristan Da Cunha
But is that a country? 🤔
this gonna blow out because of the meme
Wait, what meme? Haha
Slowrise Fishing There's a meme that basically jokes that the meme page at hand has more followers than Tokelau has residents, so the followers of the meme page can invade it easily.
They've obviously never met a Tokelaun then haha! Thanks for the info!
LMAO ITS NOT A COUNTRY but nice video
Semantics!
My mum is a tokelau nice to meet you have a good flight boys go Samoa &stoke lau
Have you been to the islands? It's a special place!
*Tokelau
Chur 2 much bro shot fr the video
Guilty haha.
@slowrise fishing. What he meant by his comment was: chur(cheers bro), too much (totally), shot (thanks) for the video shooting. Lol that's NZ slang!
Thanks! I only knew chur before this!
lucky youuuu
We feel lucky to have been able to go there 😊
what on earth do they do if there’s a tsunami
They get in their boats and drive towards it!
We've survived many tsunami..lol relax 😅 if you want to know, come to Tokelau ..there heaps of underground tunnel...pepelo ..ke fai Haku tali fakatiga piho😂
Tore__ke___lau not Toke allow
fyi Tokelau isn’t a country it’s owned by new zealand
Bots, no it isn't. It's, owned by the God of nations, and administered with the New Zealand, Aotearoa Kawanatanga.
It's a territory of a country.....not its own country
I don’t get why they basically copied the bosnian flag 🇧🇦🇹🇰
I guess there's only a certain number of colour combinations. The Tokelau flag has a traditional sail on it because they are master boat builders and great ocean voyagers!
Even though the Bosnian flag is older, it holds no significant cultural meaning as it was directly inspired by the EU flag 🇪🇺, the Tokelauan flag holds more cultural relevance.
We didn't copy the bosnian flag tho🧐😂 girl you trippin🤦🏽♀️
Righto, so the bloody southern cross is in the northern hemisphere. Stupid ignorant comment don't you think!
Bosnia is pretty much landlocked, so why would they portray a sun soaked sail on their flag? Tokelau, while hugging the equator, is practically bang smack in the center of the world's largest deepest, bluest moana (ocean).
Don't kill animals, be vegans.
Ignorant comment in the context of the Pacific Island nations
@@SlowriseFishing Insensitive response in the context of a planet full of fruits, vegetables, cereals, orchards, and agriculture.
Tokelau is an atoll country, their soil is sand. They can only grow coconuts, pandanas, a few other simple plants. Their diet is thousands of years old and relies heavily on fish. There are no soy beans for tofu. Veganism is a choice rich privileged societies can make. Developing countries have to eat whatever is available or starve. The climate change impacts of developed countries may one day swallow up their island nation... the CO2 from the trucks that bring your tofu from farm to plate are part of that. Tokelau has 3 large solar arrays that supply 100% of their power, they live lifestyles that leave the smallest imprint on the world environment of any people anywhere, so I think they have te right do whatever they want with the fish in their seas.
@@SlowriseFishing
1.- I know even more details about Tokelau.
2.- And precisely for this reason, one should not force urbanization against nature, those islands are quite obvious that they are not habitable, they are not sustainable, they are not compatible, the quality of life is not dignified, we should not inhabit uninhabitable places. Let them go to New Zealand to live and sow.
3.- Rich and poor we are vegans, only the rich can eat meat every day.
4.- Climate change is a political agenda to favor millionaire entrepreneurs who own the green industry. The sun causes global warming.
5.- There is more pollution from gases, excrement, waste and inputs from the livestock and meat industries, than from automobile gases.
6.- Rich children in yachts fishing for pleasure, they pollute more, and they kill animals for pleasure, sport, fun, or status.
You've never been to Tokelau, have you? Those people have lived there for 1000+ years, it's their home and none of us have any right to tell them that their traditional way of life is wrong or unethical. They eat from the sea and the lagoon, they manage the reef like they always have and always will. If anything they should be eating more of their traditional foods like fish and root crop, and less noodles and rice that come in at great expense on the boat from overseas, but hey... if that's what they want to do it's up to them.
There's no rich kids in yachts on this channel and certainly not in this video. Did you even watch it?
