- Süleyman (or Süleiman) the Magnificent was the longest-reigning emperor of the Ottoman empire. Known for his military campaigns spanning three continents, as well as his religious tolerance and masterful diplomacy, he was also a poet, goldsmith, and dedicated patron of the arts. His rule brought a golden age of artistic and literary production to the Ottoman empire, exemplified by richly patterned textiles, pottery, calligraphy, and several monumental buildings by the architect Sinan. Shot on location in Istanbul, Edirne, and the Turkish countryside. Narrated by Ian McKellan.
As part of The Met’s 150th anniversary in 2020, each month we will release three to four films from the Museum’s extensive moving-image archive, which comprises over 1,500 films, both made and collected by the Museum, from the 1920s onward. This includes rarely seen artist profiles and documentaries, as well as process films about art-making techniques and behind-the-scenes footage of the Museum.

One of the best documentaries i’ve ever watched about the Ottoman empire. Great and soothing narration from Gandalf himself
The history of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire is rich and fascinating. I have been learning about the country, it's history and culture for 2 years. It is a dream of mine to visit this amazing country.
You won't be disappointed. I want to return so badly!!!
I'm an Aussie who's been twice & I can safely say it is my favourite place in the world - nowhere is more alive & beautiful
I too just discovered this history. I would love to visit Turkey.
Just got done watching a fantastic Turkish drama based on Suleiman and Hurrem's relationship called "Magnificent Century". It's highly fictionalized, of course, but it's still a fascinating show.
Magnificent Century is outstanding. There's much that is fictional, but it does not take away from the essence of the show.
Same now I’m super interested in ottoman history I’ve watched everything I could find here on UA-cam … which isn’t much actually smh our Eurocentric views
@@JaylaStarr Have you watched that series? The entire series is here on UA-cam, with English subtitles.
@@taestyinbusan3163 well, its fictional that much...but some things are for dramatic reason...its far more accurate then "Rokselana" dont know if you watch it
@@aleksandrastojiljkovic4285 I haven't watched that, actually. Is it here on UA-cam?
Me and my brother used to watch this many times on a battered VHS video tape when we were growing up. So glad I was able to watch it again after all these years
What an interesting story what year did you watch it?
Interesting to see how people speaks. In another language I would say , my brother and I.
I really love the history of Ottoman Empire and Turkey.
i love the style these older documentaries have
I don’t know why but I admire Suleyman a lot, it’s probably my favourite person in history, his life was both amazing and tragic at the same time, I often watch documentaries about him and the Ottoman empire
I remember borrowing this documentary on VHS from the college library and watching it.... at least 10 times.
Just amazing 😍🇹🇷
Ian McKellan gives this film a heavy dose of genuine gravitas, & that makes it the best installment yet in your anniversary series...
Big thanks for sharing it!
Top notch documentary! I've seen plenty of documentaries on both UA-cam and elsewhere about the Ottoman Empire but, I have to say, that this is easily the best and most well put together. Then again, I'd expect no less from the likes of the Met! Süleyman the Magnificent was just that...magnificent. He led his empire to greatness and ushered in a golden age that Turkey hasn't seen since. He was a truly phenomenal figure and stands among the greatest leaders in history.
He was truly magnificent and the most powerful leader of his time and one of the greatest leaders of all time in human history so much so that even after hundreds of years we talk about his magnificence
Fantastic. You can really get a feel for the full range of Ottoman history and culture from this one hour. And extremely well-filmed. There's a particularly great shot of the ceiling of Sinan's mosque in Edirne right at the end. And of course Gandalf does a fine job throughout but especially with Suleiman's poetry.
Keep up this Vault series! I look forward to it every month. :)
Magnificent narration of a magnificent age... for all the world to see.
What a wonderful piece.
Fascinating love the commentator ‘s voice
Its gandalf ian mckellen how is talking one ring to rule them all.:)
Thank you so much
Very informative.tnk u
Beautiful film!
Historical fact are non existing pronunciation diabolical. Usual western verbal diarrhoea.
lovely
Very nice
I saw this great documentary about Ottoman Empire and especially about Suleiman the Great and I loved this unbiased and impartial documentary.
Earlier in the morning I watched it again.
Karachi and Quetta on Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 and Motorola G9+
1908, 29/09/2021.
I can tell this documentary was made years ago, because it has been proven that Pargali Ibrahim was never married to Suleiman's sister.
Yes and you can see that even in the title the year is written : 1987
@@mixvideos5483 I was just pointing that fact out to anyone else who watched the video. Nothing negative was intended by my comment ✌️
@@taestyinbusan3163 I know that mate. I was also just telling the year in which it was released so you can see it's a very old documentary. I'm sorry if I sounded a bit rude but I was just pointing out the year ✌️🏻
@@mixvideos5483 No worries 💜 Stay safe.
Suleiman challenged King Charles V to battle Man-to-Man ..........Hahaha, i think Charles was very clever not to accept!
he stood no chance whatsoever against a disciplined Sultan
Who is Charles,?
@@lynlynn2564 Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor
Lol interesting indeed 🤣 , anywhere I can read up on that?
22:48 That was epic.

this documanted in1987..
His father Salim the 1st was major sultan who conquered 70 percent of the ottoman territory.
His great-great father Mehmed II was the first major Sultan conquering most of Rumelia and eventually, Constantinople.
Yes it's right mehmed the conqueror
@@erol2452His great grandfather, not great-great grandfather.
Name of the music starting at 06:39?
The magnificent
Turchorum Imperator Maximus
Why did it not speak about Sehzade Bayezid?
I love Bayezid
What's name this documentary
Magnificent Century
I thought mustafa mother was Maidhavren ? Who the heck is Gullihbar ?
Mahidevran si also named Giulbahar
Gulbahar is Mahidevran. Concubines were regularly renamed several times in their lifetimes.
Ibrahim DID NOT marry Suleiman's sister.
So that is fictional that Hatice was married to Ibrahim?
@@jodrew1845 yes
Is it gulbahar was mahidevran ?
Yes this is an other name for Mahidevran
Yes
All the Turkish Republic Mosques cant tip on the Ottoman one mosques magesty.
If Hunyadi was alive at the time of Suleyman, the magnificent would not have so much luck. The Kingdom of Hungary suffered from the Turks so much, millions died. At Mohacs, after his victory, he beheaded all of the men who survived the battle, about 2000. Then he took those candle holders from Buda and put it in the Hagia Sophia where you can still see them today. They took all the treasures and who knows what happened to them.
On the end the Ottomans were kicked out… magnificent..
"if"
@@teukufadel8293 he died 1456, so of course he wasn’t alive when Suleyman came to the throne..had he been, the sultan would not come close to the Kingdom of Hungary.
You mean treasures that Hungarians stole from Croatia/Bosnia/Serbia/Romania/Bulgaria ?
Sultan Suleyman would have served Hunyadi his a$$ on a plate! Now that would have been magnificent. 👌
@@SA41959 he wouldn’t come close to Hunyadi, maybe read history. Hunyadi defeated Mehmet II and the Turks didn’t come close to Hungary until Suleyman. ( 70 years) Had he been still alive, Suleiman wouldn’t dare..
This is interesting but spends so much time on tangents.
15:45 People in medieval Europe didn't believe the earth was flat, that's a common misconception, a fallacy. It's a bit problematic in a "historical film".
Really, what is your authority for that statement?
@@sampuatisamuel9785 honestly life was difficult and short. Don't think regular people spent too much time debating such things
The province of France. I bet they didn't forget that lol.
