Since I'm not a responsible UA-camr, I can say I absolutely enjoy my car on 90% of my journeys! We don't have speed cameras and straight roads are hard to find! A lot of the back roads don't have lines and speed limits are more of a suggestion.
@@torquecars Yeah, we could say that one attribute of the spirited drive is when avoiding those jerky movements becomes, using jerky movements of steering input to get better control hahha :) Controlled ofcourse. Years ago when I have seen f1 instructor teaching people this technique to be faster and save tires at the same time in higher speeds I was not really sure about that :) And I love steering with gas on rwd car. @wolfschindler8921 That's me driving and my wife screaming at me to slow down 🤣 . She drives a crossover, so her sense of speed is different. Also, I drive like an old man in the city, but a boy racer on the back roads and in the highways. It's completely different 🤫, with my wife, it's the complete opposite
Spirited driving,ah, I vaguely remember those days. Nowadays I can't recall driving in a spirited manner that lasted for more than a few minutes before encountering someone driving well below the limit on the road ahead. Virtually impossible to overtake, you wind up sitting behind Nellie, or, divert off down a side road. Then there are the multiple lowered limits, hidden cameras etc. Can't recall the last time I went out for a drive in a car just for fun.. With a motorcycle, the Nellies become mostly irrelevant. Some spirited riding to be had there ( For the time being)
Less so, as today's systems are much more capable of passive regen, small engine dpf have 15-20 years of design iteration at this point. Post-combustion fuel injection, engine designs incorporating treatment systems closer to exhaust manifold, doing away with eloys etc. Also petrols have GPF now, so no longer diesel specific
The spirited drive is also the best thing to avoid sleeping while driving.BMW for example offers such a great driving experience that I haven't heard of such thing as sleeping while driving one.Nice video!
I have spirited ride on my motorcycle frequently. It’s only 47bhp so I can have fun with the engine, keeping the engine singing and cornering at around 80% of maximum grip without endangering anyone and I’m not too often above the speed limit . Where I am above the limit I am on a clear road with no one else around .
The only times I reached my Miata ND2 RF G-184 Top Revolution limits were during track-days. Living in a mountainous area, I get to drive in a spirited manner (especially on the tight curves) almost all the time - after bringing the car to the optimal temperature (it needs at least 15 minutes). My ex was screaming at me almost all the time, but my wife enjoys my driving 😇 Even my dog was trained not to vomit in the car and now he has no problem when I am drifting the Miata or the Jimny. Attention: the only non-destructive way to drive your car is to stay well within your limits, not forcing your luck and to take excellent care of your car (twice or three times more often than the producer asks, understanding that life time warranty means less than 40'000km etc.). I wish you all a responsible spirited driving fun!
I have just got an Audi a1 (about 2 months ago) I am really enjoying driving the car around the Brecon Beacons . These roads are so fun and the car seems to enjoy a ‘spirited ‘ drive .
Cloggie here. Had heard "spirited driving" before, and the very first time I knew exactly what was meant, it was obvious to me, though I do like to joke it means drunk driving ;)
Had done this a bit when travelling to/from Morrisons. Stayed longer in 2nd and 3rd making the engine roared. The explosively powerful feeling of the engine is so good.
We have two older “performance” cars: an NB Miata (MX-5) and a C5 Corvette. The Miata can be safely and legally driven at its limits rather easily, while the Corvette requires open space at a local track to even approach its limits. However, we live in Texas where speed limits are often considered “minimum safe speeds” if even that, so I can exercise the LS1 merging onto interstate highways at speeds exceeding the posted limit by a substantial amount while accident avoidance maneuvers occasionally enable me to explore the outer limits of handling and braking. Adrenaline is a wonderful thing.
Absolutely love this video! It’s thrilling to do a “spirited drive” on a Sunday! I live in Alberta, Canada and we have some epic roads near the mountains where you can really enjoy the mechanics of driving (safely!). On a side note as I love your driving footage especially of East Kent roads! As a former resident I love trying to figure out where it was taken! Cheers!
I do agree with this, but at the risk of being controversial I think it is harder in modern cars. I have usually driven older cars and I also own a 1972 MGB GT and 1973 Triumph Stag. I can give them a spirited drive and I know where the limits are. Then last year I inherited- following the sad passing of my brother in law- a BMW 335 with less than 30k on it. I cannot get this anywhere near the limit in terms of handling or even get it beyond 2k revs unless I use Sport manual mode and hold it in the “wrong” gear. It is stupidly fast even in eco mode. So that makes it great for long journeys but difficult to be spirited- legally.
LOL - that was actually me demonstrating how hard it is to do heel and toe (toe and heel) in some modern cars, but it found it's way into this video. View it as an outtake!
I love driving in Thailand! In theory Thailand does have speed limits, but not so much in practice. If you keep a reasonable speed, you will be fine! You can get fined for speeding, but then you have to drive quite fast. I love driving without having to look at the speed meter, only having to pace my speed according to the actual conditions on the road! The interesting thing is that most people drive quite responsibly even without hard speed limits. I do drive responsibly, and I have never gotten a speeding ticket in Thailand!
I enjoy my spirited drive almost every Saturday morning at 6am in my honda odyssey. Luckily, it has paddle shifters, so I can control the gears. This is in toronto Canada, and 6am is probably the only time I can get the highway relatively clear of traffic
Love the heel and toe on the pedals. I loved spirited driving back in the days of my MGBs. (I had empty roads back then.) I still love spirited driving in my modest but super Ford Fiesta. Driving can still be fun, even today!
It seems quite hard to do in some models of car though, which is a shame. It's also something you don't get taught when learning to drive - hence why I have an upcoming hour long advanced driving course going live 24th December.
The problem with the idea of a spirited drive is that most drivers are incapable of driving safely to a high standard. Just look at how many cars fail to round bends in the rain or the dark, how many roadside shrines there are where good drivers have died, even in good weather. The ONLY place for driving with 'spirit' is on a private race track, not the public road where round that exciting bend can be a person walking , a horse , sheep, stationary car etc. In recent years I have had two friends killed , seperate incidents, by drivers taking their car for a 'run'. There is no such thing as the freedom of the road, it is full of other people animals and vehicles.
As expressed and shown in this video: driving should be done within reasonable limits. Another point to mention is that you should drive to the conditions of the road, weather, and visibility. If you're going at such a speed that your car cannot stop when you are confronted with a hazard then you are going too fast. Another separate point for pedestrians is to be safe when walking on roads. I have come across many people (especially around tourist spots) that walk with their back to traffic or along the inside of bends and wear all dark clothes, standing in the road. Road safety is a two way street.
@@Emotional_Support_Twink A simple point to remember is that Pedestrians have right of way at all times on all roads except on 'Special Roads, (motorways)'. Your responsibility as a driver is not negated in any way by the actions of a pedestrian. There is a clear heirarchcy of road users , and people driving cars are at the bottom. It so happens that my two friends who were killed were riding cycles, with lights on , on country lanes, when they were killed by drivers who confessed to going for a fast drive and hit them from behind . I have no patience with car drivers who cannot drive safely at all times. If you want to drive fast do it on a racetrack! Road safety is a matter for ALL
@@Emotional_Support_TwinkI don't expect pedestrians to have road sense (many would not be drivers) so am extremely wary of people on pavements, especially families/children, even on what may otherwise appear to be a "clear road". Then we have so many different sped limits on the same road, like 70, then 80, then 70, then 60, then 80 again! I actually do not enjoy driving here. Spirited driving is just not possible!
@@emilresmann Totally agree, the speed limits are changing ridiculously frequently on some roads and you can never guess what the current speed limits is when coming onto a B-road (aka landsväg). But what is even worse is that frequently people are driving 10, 20 and sometimes even 30km/h below the speed limit. Annoying as F.
I used to love a spirited drive, but this usually involved exceeding the speed limits at times. With so many ‘obstacles’ to enjoying driving, my focus has been on building skills in other areas - toe and heel downshifts, braking using my left foot etc. I still love driving in snow and I’ve, as it gives me an opportunity to explore the limits of handling and traction at lower speeds. It’s a shame we don’t get more snow, as I see it as an opportunity to learn. I feel sorry for new drivers who may feel compelled to have those black boxes installed for insurance purposes - I have always felt it important to explore the limits of a car’s handling (responsibly - it’s about learning what to do in challenging situations), but these boxes could end up penalising drivers interested in learning the limits of their cars and their own abilities.
I had a car many years ago that just did the short trips to work and back. Every so often it would give off this bad egg smell, but not from the exhaust, I don’t recall.
