  • Thanks to her, Calcuttans know what Chinese food made by Chinese people tastes like.
When most people look at Monica Liu, they see a smiling restaurant owner in Tangra, Kolkata. But this unassuming grandmother of nine is also known as the Don of Chinatown. Monica Liu owns and runs five authentic Chinese restaurants in Kolkata - Kim Ling & Beijing in Tangra, Tung Fong in Park Street, and branches of her restaurant Mandarin on Sarat Bose Road, and Lake Avenue. She's been awarded the Best Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003.
But Kolkata's woman of steel comes fom humble beginnings. During the Indo-China war in 1962, when Monica was just a child, her entire family was arrested and taken to Deoli Camp, Rajasthan. Finally, it was when Monica and another young boy in the camp wrote a letter to the Home Minister, their release orders were processed. Forgotten for five years in the camp, when the family finally returned to Kolkata, they had lost their home, their friends and almost everything else.
Starting a new life, Monica's mother would make momos to sell to make ends meet. It was from helping her mother every evening that Monica's journey began. Finally, in 1991, she opened Kim Ling, the family's first restaurant. When goons tried to intimidate the family into giving them free food, Monica responded in kind, eventually earning her the title 'Don of Tangra'.
101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. As India moves towards homogenized global pop culture, 101 Traces honors the people, the objects, and the skills that connect us to our ancient identity.

Hi Everybody, am very lucky to stumble on this Indian UTube channel about a Chinatown in Calcutta, India. Several who read me , maybe know about the island of Mauritius in the indian Ocean on the east coast of Madagascar, where we have about a good majority of people whose ancestors came from India, mainly the southern districts whose dialect is the Bhoypuri, they still speak ; there is also a minority of Tamil's descent. Am a Chinese, religion Buddhist, a little less than 5% native- Chinese on the island. Auntie Monica Liu ( I think his husband's parents came from the village's clan of the LIU in the district of Moy- Chou in the province of Kwang Tung ( Kwon-Chu) is very similar both in physical appearance & body gestures plus the accent when she speak in English to many of our Chinese Aunties in Mauritius. Strong personality & character with the traits : hard-working, perseverance & above all a big sense of Entrepreneurship equals success. She must be of Hakka- descent & may be still speaking the Hakka Dialect. That is a guess on my my part. My Apology if I am wrong. My Best Greetings to Auntie Monica. The Chinese Lunar NEW YEAR, still being presently celebrated, both in Mainland China & Abroad, I wish u All Chinese in Calcutta & India < KUNG SHEE FAT CHOY> Jpier

I remember going to Beijing Restaurant In Tangar for the first time when I was just a kid. Me and my cousins love Chinese cuisine a lot.
Momos are my favorite and pretty much all sorts of other dumplings.
When I first stepped into the restaurant back then ,I remember it very clearly that it was fully pact and with a lot of hustle.
But as soon as we sat down in our chairs the ambiance became very claiming and zen all of a sudden.
The think I liked the most was the architecture of the place and the perfect shade of Red currants ...... Something you'd see in those old Chinese Movies......

It's nice to see a Chinese community so accepted in India. Both China and India have impacted greatly on Asia. There have been exchanges throughout history and have molded South-East Asia. There are large Indian and Chinese populations in SEA and both cultures have been firmly embedded. However, Indians and Chinese are everywhere and their cultures live through them no matter if in Toronto, London or Australia. Bravo, your cultures are to be proud of because they respectively are so old, deep and yet still thriving.

There have been Chinese living in Kolkata since the 1770s, the first documented Chinese was Yang Tai Chow or "Tong Achew" who moved to Kolkata, then Calcutta, in 1778 and brought over workers from China to help operate his sugar mill, the place where he died is called "Achipur" after his name Achew.
