JJ Abrams' Star Trek: One of the Best Reboots Ever?

  • How did J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek Reboot come to be? In 2002, Star Trek Nemesis just about marked the death of the franchise. Indeed, the fact that it was a worldwide box-office disaster meant that many felt the series had run out of steam. For the first time in many years, there were no active big-screen franchises or Trek shows running on TV, with the often neglected Star Trek: Enterprise going off the air in 2005. It seemed space operas were out of vogue, with the rise of superhero movies taking Hollywood by storm. Not only was there the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies and the Christopher Nolan Batman movies breaking box office records, but also a little company called Marvel studios decided to start making the own movies, beginning with Iron Man. Paramount wanted a franchiise that would be as big as these, so the decision was made to reboot Star Trek. It would prove to be a successful film, but would meet unexpected challenges at the overseas box office, which we dig into in this episode of Star Trek Revisited!

If I recall correctly, he said he never cared for Star Trek, he preferred Star Wars.
While it’s true Harve Bennet and Nick Meyer weren’t familiar with Star Trek, they did take the time to watch the shows and learn what made GOOD Star Trek and more importantly, what not to do.

Star Trek is very similar to the Keeanu Reeves Constantine movie: if you're unfamiliar with the character you'll probably think the movie is great, but once you learn more about how he is in the comics you'll probably think "wow this is nothing like how Constantine is supposed to be"

JJ Abrams always makes films that I feel I should be enjoying more than I am. I thought Star Trek and Into Darkness were way too far from the original source material, and even today I have a hard time getting through them. Beyond was mildly better, but that's damning it with faint praise. I also didn't really like his take on Star Wars. He has the same problem with both Star Wars and Star Trek - he makes the universe fit the story instead of having the story take place in the universe. It constantly takes me out of his films while I'm watching them.

Nimoy didn't insist that Spock be killed off. When he did the Motion Picture, he hated that, and he also was going through a lawsuit with Paramount about residuals. So, he was reluctant to come back for Wrath of Khan. Nicholas Meyer and Harve Bennett told him that they would kill off Spock, because every actor loves a good death. But he didn't insist on it. In fact, he had such a good time with WoK, he and Bennett worked on planting the seed where Spock can come back. But, this myth did linger. In fact, when Nimoy was originally denied the opportunity to direct Star Trek III because the brass said "You insisted on killing off Spock." Nimoy told them that his contract for WoK is in the archives in this building. Go and look to see if he insisted on this fact.

First off, they absolutely nailed the casting.
Legal restrictions notwithstanding, Star Trek fell into two main traps.
Paramount wanted to "do a Star Wars" and make the movie more "Rock and Roll". This was a fatal misunderstanding of what Trek always was. Trek was not about car chases and knuckle dent fistfights, but about exploring who are are and where we want to be.
JJ Abrams was the second mistake. His lack of the desire to even try to understand the source material, combined with his reliance on gimmicks and nonstop chase scenes instead of better direction and cohesive character/plot development really doomed this movie series into a big and dumb "Fast and Furious" is space.

    • @white-dragon4424

Abrams claims to be more of a Star Wars fan, but it shows that he doesn't know much about that either, except for the basics. With both franchises he's relied on smoke and mirrors gimmicks to cover for the lack of decent story and characters.

      Very good explanation!
JJ lacks the imagination, creativity, and understanding of Star Trek, and it shows. The only thing he has and abundance of is ambition, but not the right kind. Instead of concentrating on good storytelling, he takes the best parts of other movies and tries to mold them to fit his limited views. He then assaults you with lens flare, explosions, and rapid fire crisis hoping you won’t notice the enormous plot holes.

It's so strange to contrast Abrams' Star Trek with TOS. TOS is actually almost surreal in its aestheticism with its big splashy colors and expressionistic shadows. The tactile film grit brings a verisimilitude that's not easily replaced by digital; at least not the way that Abrams uses it.

To quote Coach Beard from Ted Lasso, "Nooo!" What a disappointment of a reboot. It could have been so much better with what they set up, but they just rushed everyone to be running around. Just by tweaking some stuff and changing it so he's on the path to wanting to be a Starfleet captain would have been good. Redo the Kobayashi Maru scenario and don't tell the other cadets that he cheated, so when the time comes and just about all of the bridge crew is out, he's put in the chair because he beat the no win scenario. Now he has to make good, because we know he's a brilliant tactician. I also don't think that we should have had all the classic crew on the Enterprise as well. We should have him encounter them over the course of a trilogy and by the end of it, he's pulled them all to be on the Enterprise.
This movie is pretty much what they did in SOLO.

The stories were most meh, the action was okay but nothing special, and the locations were all pretty bland. But the cast was absolutely fantastic, not just parodies of the original cast but doing their own thing with enough similarities to understand they were the same characters. I especially liked Karl Urban's McCoy but none of the core cast did a bad job at all. Just wish they were given a better set of movies to work with, the okay ST09, the not great Into Darkness, and the pretty decent Beyond.

Abram's Star Trek movies are the worst. The best thing about them is the cast. The worst is the writing, and the direction. He killed a very strong franchise. It's a shell of what it used to be. Lens flare? Stupid plots that depend on McGuffins? Even reusing the "Mining gear?" idea from the first movie in the third movie as alien mining gear? A time traveling futuristic ship that is a mining ship that happens upon Spock carrying a planet destroying McGufifn? And don't even get me started on he's screaming Khan to people who have no idea and have never met him. They were the absolute worse. Motorcycles to Bestie Boys music. Just junk. Plus monstrous amounts of idiotic lens flare.

Star Trek (2009) is 15 years old!
I remember seeing it with my sister Cara opening weekend
My late father really liked it on dvd too
There’s so many great action scenes of the space battles, lots of callbacks and inside references to the franchise, the acting is amazing from everyone involved bringing the characters to life, and a great amount of laughs
JJ Abrams and the writers have even made their own ways of using time travel, alternate realities, and rewriting history
This definitely came as a shock to many since the filmmakers took a big risk by resetting the timeline making so many changes, in a way the older movies happened but this is the Enterprise Crew going on a different path than what they were originally intended giving them modern sensibilities and “human” desires bringing enough steamy friction
All the actors perfectly bring these characters we know and love to life in a new fashion
Michael Giacchino’s score can be very bombastic at times, like really scale it back a bit plus the movie does slow down a lot during the middle
Still it provides great visuals, surefire thrills, a well-made fun adventure, and paved the way for many of these actors making $385.7 million worldwide even winning an Oscar for best makeup
It doesn’t alienate casual viewers while still catering to the hardcore fans
And it’s incredible this got made the way it did considering Hollywood was suffering another writers strike almost halting production
Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman manage to successfully reboot this series creating the kind of popcorn excitement you’d expect; they even remind the audience that heroes still bleed, they also love but also make mistakes
It delivers almost everything you want in a summer movie while also respecting the franchise that has endured for over 60 years
This is the movie that made me a bonafide Trekkie for life!
Most would argue it might even be better than Wrath of Khan

The first Abrams movie got the energy back. I think Abrams went off the rails a bit with the sequels (Star Trek Into Darkness) but I do like the first Abrams movie.

Jar Jar Abrams' movies have zero appreciation for Trek. They are merely generic space adventure movies.

I grew up in '90s and was never a real fan of Star Trek. Any of them. But J.J. Abrams's reboot got me into the universe as a whole. Without him, wouldn't care at all.

Never really liked the original cast movies, but I really enjoyed this movie. Fantastic cast, I find myself rewatching this movie at least once a year.

Star Trek by 2008 was dying, it had lost energy, and needed to completely begin again. James Bond had already suffered the same fate and came back better in Casino Royale. I was surprised when J.J. Abrams messing with the formula didn't draw the ire of fans. Star Trek fans are pretty chill, it seems. Unlike Star Wars fans.
The best Star Trek movies are big, action-packed, high-drama stories like II, IV, VI, and VIII, and the lesser ones are more like long episodes. Srar Trek 2009 was just the kind of story we needed.
I never minded or noticed that Kirk became captain so fast, the only issue I had was the "Lightning storm in space" description for the time travel. Just a few lines would have explained it better. The casting is totally fantastic, everyone sells their character perfectly, don't forget Bruce Greenwood as Pike and the actor who played Spock as a child, beating the shit out of his bullies.
How good is this movie? even non-Trekkies liked it, and that's really saying something.

Divisive?¿ Wtfook u talkin aboot, mate? I think I speak for America when I say that I preferred the sequel, with Benedict Bumblebutt as Khan, to this one. Let alone to the 3rd installment. The 3rd movie watched like a damn music video, with terrible jokes and a lame villain/boring climax. The most memorable thing about that movie is that it was completely unmemorable. I must say, being forgettable does not a good movie, make. Good day, sir!

Man, I only wish JJ did for Star Wars what he did for Star Trek! Imagine if Force Awakens was as good as Star Trek? The first Trek was great escapist entertainment much like his MI3 was. Sadly, in my opinion, it's all been downhill for JJ ever since.
