Genshin Impact added a nice little event where you have to complete gliding challenges. There are 7 challenges in total and each day, a new one will unlock.
This is my route for an easy gold reward for day 2.

Yes, it's the thrust forward skill after collecting 3 of those orb things. Hope the video helped.

Is that a character specific ability, if so I"M FUCKED, i don't have that character and forever drift down unable to even touch the first thing

No, it's part of the event. You can use any character. Once you interact with the start point you gain two new skills. Boost forward and updraft.
