Gregg Allman Reminisces On His Allman Brothers Days | CONAN on TBS

I met Greg in Reno at the Peppermill. He was at the bar before the show. He signed my original Rolling Stone magazine introducing the Bros Band. Greg talked for nearly an hour about the band and music. He made me feel like I had known him for years. That night could only have been better if his brother was there. I got to talk to my idol and he turned out to be cool!
Harry Ferguson Thanks for sharing your story! Glad you were able to meet your idol.
Greg Allman was one of the best southern rock musicians of all time. I used to listen to him and the band as a child in the 1970's. Rest in peace with Duane.
regardless of hemisphere, the man had a way of interpreting the blues.
Took me less than 24 hours to read Gregg's book ..it was fantastic ..such a gentle soul , honorable and I learned so much from his words especially the last chapter ..love you forever Gregg , thank you
Gregg's laugh was priceless
Le'Vin Moser, isn’t he a lost treasure?! What a tremendous talent.
I've watched him perform, only showing a very serious face. It's now 2021, and, watching this segment, this is the first time I've ever seen Greg Allman really laugh - 'glad to know he had a sense of humor.
RIP Gregg, The KING of Southern Rock.
Gregg and the Allmans were SO much more than southern rock.
With all due respect...Ronnie Van Zant holds that title.
He hated his music being labeled Southern Rock. He just called it "rock rock".
LeaveMeAloneUA-cam yep!
@@leavemealoneyoutube1707 but if you're from the south you're proud that they are as well
First time seeing Gregg laugh so hard.
Bless him..
RIP Gregg Allman. One of the best voices in all of music. It's sad to see all the greats going.
Props to Conan for having rock legends on his show. I don't see that with other late night hosts.
RIP Duane Allman (November 20, 1946 - October 29, 1971), aged 24
And
RIP Gregg Allman (December 8, 1947 - May 27, 2017), aged 69
You both will be remembered as legends
Jaimoe is the lone survivor of the ABB. Long live Jaimoe.
Loved seeing Gregg laugh with Conan kidding around. Conan is the best talk show host
I saw Gregg live in 1978 at a summer fair near Vancouver WA.
It was incredible to be that close to him while he jammed out.
'Live at Fillmore East' is a Classic.
Although he is a man of few words. He makes those words count. Big respect
Frank Papp Respect? What a joke
+Earl Bob ?
Eat it, moron.
Gregg was cool
Man Gregg was so so humble. It's the truth. Best live album EVER produced. Bar none. Nothing comes close. They were really hitting on all cylinders for those shows that make up that, album. Whipping Post proves that without a doubt.
I Love Gregg Allman, Such a Laid Back, Cool Guy..Rest His Soul...
Saw his band twice. Marvelous voice and musician.
RIP Gregg Allman.....we will always treasure your music. Glad the Allman Brothers are reunited in Heaven again.
A polite southern gentleman who doesn't care for bawdy talk.
Such a humble man, I wish you nothing but total admiration and respect, now you and your brother are jamming some sweet music, rest easy my friend.
Damm l love this dude, what a real Man,lm so sad that we lost Gregg,it seems so sad and such a loss.RIP Gregg
Terri Manuri , isn’t he a lost treasure and tremendous talent. So unexpected. 💔😢
I have an anecdote to go along with this video and this is a for real, down to earth truth. In the late 60s before Greg and Duane really made ti "big time" they were on the road one evening and traveling US 43 through a small town, Jackson, Alabama. We only had 3 patrolmen at the time, not counting the chief. At any rate, as it would happen, their vehicle was not what you would call "keeping it straight". One of my friends, who was a cop and working that night, spied the vehicle, pulled it over, ran a few checks and decided that these guys should not be driving. They were arrested, all of em, and taken to our little jail, where they spent the night. During the night one of the band members carved "Allman Brothers Band" with the date into one of the concrete blocks in their cell. Through the years that concrete block is still right where it was over 40 years ago. The patrolman later became Chief of Police, but not because of this arrest. lol Many people have visited Jackson just to see this concrete block. To my knowledge, the building is still there eventhough the police station has moved to a more modern building. Many people have offered to come down, remove the block, put in a new block and paint the cell. All have been turned down. I am telling yall this because of the recent passing of GA. May he rest in peace. You had a good ride. Now, you and Duane have a lot of catching up to do.
Rodney Hayes , such a tremendous loss. Great talent.
Rodney Thanks for sharing this story! Words can't even express not being with them anymore. Oh but all the memories they left behind will live on in our heart great story!
Great story .. Thanks for sharing!! What a loss
Thank you so much for sharing this story. Thank you!
It’s now a historical site!
I have no problem saying that Gregg Allman is a treasure and a musical genius. None whatsoever.
Ok.. you shouldn't have to even mention the word problem in the sentence but yup
Agreed -- a class act all the way.
He sure was.....he really was.
Gregg was humble, easy going, and shy. He was a super nice person.
vampyros1 why would you anyway
my lord.... i just cannot watch more than a few seconds of anything gregg allman anymore without tearing up.... my heart aches for their music.
I lost my brother only 12 years ago, but now... there are only good memories. I see that in Gregg's eyes when he thinks of his brother.
rest in peace ,thanks for giving us the gift of your wonderful music
The fact that he had a legend like Greg Allman just shows how awesome Conan is
Good night, Gregg. Thanks for everything.
Sad that another legend is gone. Gregg Allman will live forever in the music that was left behind. RIP
Right on. And fortunately he left a lot of amazing music for us! 😎
Love Greg Allman (And The Allman Brothers). "I'm No Angel" is pure rock classic. Love it!
plus easy on the eyes! And the best voice ever! I love him!
Rest easy Gregg. Beautiful soul x
i refreshed thru the ads like 4 times before i got the straight video with no ads. This does not always work but you can try it . I still remember when the Bris were on the show in 95. This is gold thank you and my granny loves Conan so much - as we all do! LOVE and blessings - ":Jen"
There's something about being a southerner that can't be hidden, and that is genuine humility, and Gregg had it in spades! God bless you Gregg, you represented us well, rest in peace.
Gregg Allman's voice is one of the best voices we will every hear...."please call home if you change your mind".....so wistful.
God Bless you Gregg Allman....the Allman Brothers...my very first concert.....thank you....for your musical gifts.
R.I.P. Gregg Allman. Thanks for all the great music!
Love that guy, wish greg was still here. RIP greg.
That's cool as Hell> the way Conan has got Gregg laughing his ass off!! That's so cool
+Angie Rucker I noticed that too. when I watch him live, he is hard to read. I have always wondered what his personality is like I know he went through a lot but I couldn't tell if he had a mad case of the blues or just had one of those hard to read faces. I literally rewinded him laughing 4 times. it was nice to see, and now the "Gregory" from his book makes more sense.
absolutely Annie, well said!
PS...the "head phones" thing.....absolutely right! It goes right into your head and it is more personal that way.
+NoRosesForMe lol whenever I recommend a song to a friend I always say "ya gotta listen to it with headphones. only way". Then you hear more and esp the bass
Yes
☺
What about vinyl?
Sennheiser HD 650's...bought 'em almost 15 years ago. Still going strong and one of the best purchases i ever made. Beats is a joke.
Love Gregg Allman and Bros Band!! Great southern rock band and the music will live on for the rest of time!! GOD Speed Gregg and Duane and all the other band members that have passed away!! 🙏🕊️💙🙏
Gregg’s smile and happiness~Love!!! ❤️
I love Gregg, damn, I feel so old. Where has the time and beautiful music gone? Damn.
I'm a longtime Gregg/ABB fan. I got a chance to meet him in '82. I told him I was a huge fan and how much his music has meant to me over the years. He was super nice. We talked briefly about his solo album, "Laid Back," that I mentioned to him as I handed him a pen & card for him to sign for me. Gregg wrote, 'To Jim, Don't forget to boogie'.....Gregg Allman
I live right outside of Macon and I have been to the Big House museum, I recommend every one to go visit it.
what a powerful presence. you can feel the state of awe, conan, maher and andy are in. what a legend. rip
I was driving from Florida to our property in Georgia and made a detour to visit his grave. I sat there for a while. The train tracks are right next to the grave site. I couldn’t help but think of the line from Melissa. Freight train each car looks the same...The ABB spent so much time in the cemetery. I found it very peaceful.
I really enjoyed hearing Greg's thoughts and reactions to Conan's questions that provoked some good humor. Greg and Duane, and any and all the others including Barry Oakley, excellent bassist, and Trucks now departed, as we will depart, from this world, hope you have the awareness from the other side how you were admired and appreciated...You made your mark in the world with your music and thank God we have still have it to enjoy...RIP
Makes a huge difference when the host is a fan! Piers Morgan made everyone uncomfortable with his stupid and repetitive questions. It's great to see Gregg relaxed, among friends, and laughing. Two of my favorite people, Gregg Allman and Conan O'Brien.
I was born in 73. Tragic we never got to see Duane grow old. Anytime I hear a slide I think of the greatest.
Living in Macon, I've been to the ABB house a couple of times. But I don't go very often, too many memories of those times and the seeing the band back then. Afterwards I have to sit on the porch for a while.
Greg is the best. Damn, I can't get enough of this guy.
"They had to steam clean it."
If you ever get the chance, spend a day in Macon. The Big House museum, Capricorn Studios, Rose Hill cemetery, album cover sites, the H&H restaurant where Mama Louise fed them the best soul food, maybecatch a southern rock or blues concert, and much more. Give a wave to the North where Otis Redding is buried on the family farm. Macon was a big music town in the 70s. The cemetery is beautiful. Its the only band that I know of that will all be buried together in the same plot. Macon is a great day trip if you're ever in the area.
nice to see Greg laugh
If you were just met Greg at say a restaurant or bar he would look like just anybody. Who would guess how incredibly talented he is and truly special. I grew up on his music and played it endlessly. FE is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. RIP
Totally agree with his comment about how to listen to music. RIP Duane and Gregg.
That was funny when Conan said the house the big house had to be steam cleaned.. Greg was laughing like crazy I wish this was a longer interview..
Love Gregg Allman, Best of the best!! RIP Gregg, you are missed and never forgotten!! Blessings
When Gregg talked about Bill Graham's introduction for the ABB he confused the Fillmore album recording in March of '71 with the last public show at the Fillmore in June of the same year when Bill made that intro. I was at the March 12, 1971 date (early show) and they were INFRIGGIN'CREDIBLE!!! And the best part was they weren't even the headliners that weekend. They were the middle act and Johnny Winter who headlined blew what was left of the roof off the joint! What a night!
Love that story...who the hell would trash the Allman Brothers!!! I will never stop missing Greg, RIP😢💞
Gregg kept the dream alive for a long time. I really miss him and his vision.
Graduated HS in ‘76 and we hand best choices of musical talent in a Century ... Gregg, Dickey Betts and crew, once in a life time talent. 🤟
The Allman Brothers one of the best bands ever!
What a gentle soul he was. Rip Greg Allman
"The only way to listen to music is with headphones.." He's right, anyone who truly appreciates music will put on headphones every time.
every time? I love music, but you don't listen to music in your car?
Yeah, Good headphones though, im talking 500-1000 dollar pair of Bose not your 5 dollar Apple ear buds from Walmart.
Nick Varchenko In other words never go to a concert?
+Nick Varchenko Nahh live or with a stereo is fine too. I like hi fi headphones, but theres nothing wrong with a good stereo.
that's a little over the top but to each his own
Conan is hysterical, I love hearing Gregg laugh!
Saw the Allman Brothers, Dwayne was thriving, during six Fillmore Shows. Always went to the 11:30 pm slip, three best buds, 18 years old, truly the most talented of any of the 100 plus shows I saw at Bill Graham's altar. Acid had just been made illegal but thrived still during this time, that experience with Allman Brothers peaking was magical. Great interview with Conan.
You got it Gregg. I just got a new pair of headphones to practice guitar with but I'll be sure to use them for music, also. I just laid back and listened to Whipping Post @Fillmore East with em.
Priceless. Thank you for that advice, Gregg. I put on my headphones, lit my joint, and let the music take control.
By the end, I was bawling my eyes out. Happens every time I listen to that song. Dickeyz haunting solo that starts around 13:26 is so heavy on the heart. Maybe because I know this is the song that'll be played at my daddy's funeral. My daddy, the same man who gave me Howard Duane Allman's middle name, Duane.
I couldn't be prouder of the fact that I'm named after the greatest guitarist that ever lived. Your legacy will live on FOREVER, SKYDOG!
2024, and I'm still mourning his loss 😢😢😭😭
Me too… such great music from ethereal musicians.
The grit and growl of Gregg’s voice to the slow and tender songs just cannot be beaten.
I know one thing..when I die and go to Heaven(I hope) I hope I end up somewhere within listening distance of Duane and Gregg.
Dear Conan: Kudos to your great interview and FINALLY respect to a great musician ... and you let him answer the questions. Good job.
Me to saw them the first time in Piedmont Park Atlanta Ga. in 1970 . He has been in my life ever since i went in to a 2 day seclusion when i heard he died. He has a record that will be released sometime this year. But i know the Heavens ate Rockin with Gregg and Duane back together. Your Music lives Forever.
GOD BLESS GREGG ALLMAN
Greg Allman laughs like me🤣With ALL-HIS-MIGHT🤣😤🤣
Headphones,,,ear buds,,,whatever,,,YES,,my (late) brother and I believed that this is the most personal way to take in a song,,,or an album. Its just you and the music and no one else . It feels stronger and better just to YOU,. Headphones. Yes. He is the man xx ♥ "jen"
As sad as it is that gregg is gone. I couldn't be more grateful that they carried on After duane to solidify not only TABs legacy but also Duane's im glad we had him as long as we did.
Gregg amigo personal de mi adolescencia estás tocando mi corazón todos los días descansa en paz nos vemos pronto
back in the very early 70's ..dropped a hit put a stack of albums on and the headphones and next thing i knew it was the next day
Didn't know there was a book ! Didn't know there was a museum! Definately Need 2 get the book & go 2 Macon, Georgia. Can't wait.
Saw them in the early 70s in Charlotte. I stood right up at the stage under Greg's keyboard. Seeing him in person was fantastic. OMG.
A very precious man, rest in peace Gregg....
This is great, I'm commenting again ,Conan, has Greg in stitches...so cool to see him cracking up like that
Greg Allman is such a blessing to the music world. I got to have some Allman Brothers Band playing frequently and I love Gregs release with "I Can't Be Satisfied" and ""Floating Bridge", I forget the CD?
That was "Low Country Blues" Gregg's tribute to the songs from all the old blues masters he grew up listening to. I believe Gregg's last address on Earth was near Savannah, GA an area they call "the low country" because the elevation is so close to sea level.
the book is great. brings back memories of the way things were back then.
Shows how Conan is the best interviewer on late night shows and that Gregg has a great sense of humor. Another great clip on UA-cam ith Allman, Redd Foxx on Letterman.
God Bless His Soul.... Gregg is an American ICON - the music lives on FOREVER
If there's a Top 10 list of the coolest guys on the planet, Gregg Allman is on it - twice.
It's definitely worthwhile also checking out his solo stuff from the 80s. He was certainly one talented songwriter & musician.
One of the best bands live ever
Have seen the ABB and their solo projects probably 25 times between Boston and NYC. Got to meet Dickey, Gregg, and Warren at different times throughout the years. Even in the early 80’s when Gregg was always flying high, he would pack The Channel in Boston and tear the roof off the place. There was nothing better than hearing the band and their wall of sound playing their asses off. It was never quite as good for after they (Butch) kicked Dickey out of the band. Dickey had all the charisma and wrote the best songs. Glad I got to see these legends over and over - they were some great times.
This is one of the nicer interviews with Gregg Allman. Conan did a good job!
conan is a dork genius, my FAVE
Gregg's on his way out of this world. Great musician
One sunny Sunday afternoon I was giving a massage along the Mexico beach coast in Florida. I decided to explore the idea of playing Allman Brothers live at the Fillmore East as a healing tool.
Something came to me and I finished with “Whipping Post “. As I emerged to clear my aura, there was Gregg Allman walking up the beach.
RIP Gregg :-(
🎶♥️🎶 Loved seeing him laughing!!
Words of wisdom " Only way is headphones".. Truth.
The Allman Brothers Band has always been my favorite.
Lindoooo, que humilde y gran músico!
Espero lo hayas oído con el mago del slide, su hermano Duane y Dickie Betts. Incomparables!! Saludos
The Filmore album still sounds as great as ever.
He had so much talent !!
Simply the best. The Allman Brothers Band
Thank you for posting this!!!!!
Those songs can yank me out of my chair and drop me into a bean bag with headphones and the rest with candles and incense from long ago, also in a run-down old house in Kansas, circa 1972.
Allman Bros Live @ Filmer, I was in 2nd year of High school .... that changed my life completely
