"The Gnashing" Lyrics:
Buried secrets
Mythic meanings
in tender oceans spilling crimson
A leaking thimble flowing fragile
Oozing tension into blue
Hear these howls hurling our present
I know what this costs us
Hear these howls
Embrace the gnashing
I know what this costs us
I know it’s exhausting you
Without you, I am hushed
A hush like cloaking garments over shivers
In this honeyed season,
why are the boys bleeding?
Have your tears touched someone’s eyes tonight?
Now I see you’re weeping with reason
#Deafheaven, #TheGnashing, #InfiniteGranite
i cannot stop thinking about the scenario that a random person finds this song and gets the shock of their life when they look for more songs of deafheaven
Comment of the Year
Yeah that's me today.
Yes.😀Not a metal head, but preordered this one when 1st available.
What songs do you recommend then?
@@eliezerramos7278 anything since 2016 by Ihsahn. Especially his Amr album 👍
This song gets better the more you listen to it.
a no ma si es cierto
100% agree. Better every time. It’s gorgeous and so powerful.
4:41 that ghostly wailing of the guitar is what gets me every time
One of the greatest guitar plays of all time.
they are so overqualified to make shoegaze and it shows. im stoked
Second half of this song is some of their best work to date. Dan’s drum fills are mesmerizing.
I agree, very Abe Cunningham like (one of his biggest influences)
Feels like sunbather… just with a different aesthetic. I have no clue how long time fans can dislike this. It feels just as good that album just in a different way. Song rules and I’ve never been as stoked for a deafheaven album as I am now since sunbather
@@QuadiePoo Yo same here, great vibes on this track
The first time I've ever been happy that a band started using more clean vocals, everything sounds fucking huge with the new songs
pianos become the teeth
You gotta check out mastodon then ;)
It's because the clean vocals are timelessly good and not a gimmick.
@@alanbrucke Are you implying harsh vocals are a gimmick? They've been present in an entire genre of music for almost half a century, I would say they're a pretty established vocal technique, whether you like them or not.
@@yallgottaunderstand I think he meant the other way around, that bands' switching to clean vocals is sometimes gimmicky.
Whether you like the new sound or not, an undeniable fact is that this band excels at whatever they try to do.
I feel like that was the point. Yeah, they could make some more albums like Sunbather, but the band wanted to expand and explore. I'm absolutely down for it. As much as I love the early stuff. Gonna see them with Coheed towards the end of this month in Denver. FUCKING STOKED.
This slaps ass - I love everything Deafheaven. "From the kettle onto the coil" , "Near" , "Great mass of color" - give it to me intravenously
Don't care that they've abandoned the Black Metal sound, this is as good as anything they've ever done.
i never think Deafheaven as a black metal band, i always catch the post rock vibe they give. When you consider them as a post rock band (that fuse black metal or some other music elements) i think you'll see them in a different light.
I remember back in 2012 when they explode and i mention something to their guitarist on Twitter and got replied, when i said that The Pecan Tree sounds a lot like Jesu song's The Small Wonder and he replied that he fused Foo Fighters song to that riff. Ever since i never thought of them as a black metal band, but they really incorporate element of black metal really well. Props to the sound of the vocal and the drum.
yep....i also never considered them as metal. They are too post rock-y to be called a metal band.
They're "post-metal."
If i remember right, They started calling themselves that.
This is full blown dream pop
This change in direction is so fucking good. I love all their stuff, but part of what makes them so exciting is that they push themselves on every album, and I honestly think introducing clean vocals will do a lot in terms of opening up a ton of avenues for their songwriting.
Infinite Granite is proving to be a huge turn in sound and mood - but I CANNOT WAIT to hear how this album gets added into their live show.
What a brilliant songwriting, solo at the end is out of this world beautiful and I actually prefer this Deafhaven with clean vocals.
While I hope they are pulling an Alcest and will return to the metal one day, I do appreciate their experimentation. The band is of course killing it.
Music like this is what's keeping me alive and pushing forward.
This sounds very peri-apocalyptic to me. Like, the world is burning down around you, and everything is very intense, but your imminent destruction is a foregone conclusion.
Yeah and I feel like the person singing doesn't really care as they are somewhat enthusiastic about it and they need to explicitly tell someone else "I know what this costs us".
the best deafheaven song so far imo, cant stop listening
I feel some kind of Anathema-inspired era for this new Deafheaven. Loving it!
Anathema 😍
George's cleans are very Pallbearer-like
Truth, really sweet
A little interpolish
Are we talking WWF or am I off?
I was more thinking Sunny Day Real Estate, but i can see what you are saying.
I see pallbearer....i like instantly
Can't stop listening this album.
They evolve, perfect!! I love this song
George and the whole band has it no matter what style they go for. Full shoegaze for the win.
these are the best MS windows screen savers I've ever seen
God I cannot wait for this vinyl
Beautiful voice and sound too. One of the best songs of the year 👏👏👏🎵🎶🍂🎩🖤🥂
I cant explain how DFVHN makes me feel, its a surprise everytime i heard them, its a full roller coaster of emotions ♡ 🥀
This is brilliant...i did not expect an album like this, but i totally love the two new songs.
George Clarke + Kerry McCoy + Daniel Tracy + Shiv Mehra + Chris Johnson = A bunch of brilliant and beautiful minds 🖤
You did it guys!!
Hear these howls embrace the gnashing 🔥❤️🔥🖤✊🏼
I blasted this on full volume today totally worth it
Absolutely stunning song, genius songwriting, top-noch production, unbelievably excited for this record!
Already on Spotify if someone's waiting for the video to premiere
They have to open with this one live.
Folks are saying Alcest but I'm hearing more Amusement Parks on Fire, at least in the first half.
Nice comparison for sure. I can hear it too
deafheaven never disappoints
Siempre he visto que Deafheaven es mucho más que una banda de Black Metal, es Post Rock, es Post Metal, es Shoegaze... Es indescifrable y eso la hace genial
The solo at the end of this is boss.
I feel so lucky to have discovered this band recently, I was already a huge shoegaze fan and this album will kick ass, but I listened to sunbather and holy shit sign me up for that stuff too
New Bermuda on acid is one of the single greatest musical experiences I've ever had. Baby Blue will absolutely melt your brain.
ppl need to stop expecting artists to do exactly what the fans want or the exact same thing forever. i only expect that deafheaven do whatever the fuck they want and what feels true to them because that's what creativity is about.
Amen
Love this song so much, makes me feel so relaxed. I love the vocals. Great job guys 🖤
I was honestly quite surprised to hear clean vocals and nothing similar to any of their previous albums. At first I was hesitant but I kept listening to it and it completely grew on me. It’s some sort of progressive rock shoe gaze mix and I’m on board. Excited to hear the rest of the album!
This is absolutely fantastic.
George voice reminds me of Mike Lessard from The Contortionist. Love this.
Phenomenal band and vocalist, hope we get some new tunes from them soon.
@@Gravityys Agree! Also, Clairvoyant is their best release in my opinion.
So Interpol-ish, it slaps!! Just now discovered, thank you random suggested playlist .
JUST PERFECT MY GUYS, MUCH LOVE FROM BRAZIL
This band and this label are incredible.
this is my new go-to song when I need to cry.
Brilliant melodic bass work on this
I don’t mind a clean album but I’d like an EP with black brick style songs
That was my most disappointed song from them. I'm happy they did not go that direction for this album.
I had the exact same though when I heard the new song!
@@redrobotmonkey you probably smell like lentil curry from three nights ago
@@bugasmike Lentil is pretty good. Curry too. Never had them together though.
I feel like they threw us black brick so we wouldn't complain when this album came out lol. They'll probably do a heavier album again down the line.
The guitar solo at the end is pretty cool
I love this song in every way holy crap, I can't believe how much this song means to me, I'm glad I got to hear it, can't wait for the full album release!!
Big fan of the old albums. Was shocked by but actually really loved Great Mass of Color. This one didn't do it for me in the same way. Still excitedly awaiting my zoetrope vinyl tho.
My experience as well
Yeah this song doesn't feel like it has much identity or direction, just sort of meanders along for 5 minutes. Great Mass of Color has shown there's still going to be some great tracks on the new album though
DFHVN is evolving and I fucking love it.
I'm predicting that Infinite Granite will be their breakthrough album (more accessible to the masses), and it will make them filthy rich. 🤑 🤑🤑. Great songs and the production is superb.
THIS IS SO GOOD
Loving these new tracks.
I listen to fucking everything. From Hiphop to dsbm and I never fanboyed so hard.
Sounds good to me. Black brick is still one of my favorites though
that Killing Joke influence tho
old stuff is good, sure, but this is so much more heartfelt and REAL.
Love always!!!!
Love it!!!!!
I enjoyed! Thank you!
I enjoy this greatly. Thank you
Im absolutely loving this new sound. If the rest of the album is as solid as the first two singles, this might be an AOTY contender for me.
Oh my🖤🖤🖤this is sooo beautiful
so excited for this album
Pretty dope!!
Second excellent track. How have I never heard of these guys before???
The new music reminds me somewhat of this English shoegaze band Last Leaf Down, albeit heavier and less swimming in reverb and delay. The vocals on this sound a bit like the singer for Interpol. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the entire album. This song and the other one I've heard are good songs too as far as songwriting goes.
August 20th can't get here soon enough
Gaaah, so beautiful x
Damn i love this
wow, this is sooooo good!
I like it! We all need a change sometimes and it's OK
The chorus gives me huge Failure vibes
I don't mind a full shoegaze record from them. The band sounds great as usual. But I guess the vocals will come as a bummer to some deafheaven fans.
glad those are the cancer lol
came here for this comment
I was disappointed on my first listen. Now I can't stop listening. I hope for some more deafheaven vocals in the other songs, at least in a bit of the songs. But I am loving this.
A change is always good. Can just listen to the older albums for heavy vocals..
I don't mind the clean vocals, I mean Melting Sun is one of my favorite albums ever, and after hearing that I thought maybe Deafheaven could benefit from clean vocals too. But after hearing this...well, let's just say, I still think that could be true, if they had a better singer.
Deafdive
Pretty much.
They wish
Good luck boys, nobody follows a killer.
I loved Sunbather, I’ve listened since but this is their best song. I will die on this hill. Fuck this is so good.
Very cool. Get some Failure vibes from the chorus.
Serious Failure vibes across the board here
This song definitely fails, you right
@@faaltov De gustibus non est disputandum...
@@ghostbuttster pedit mei comedent
The riff in the 03:24 is very failure-y
There are all these textures right now. Is great.
I just got this as an ad, and when I went to copy a link for the song I had to listen to a Lindt ad. Feels ironic.
really good stuff
Idk the old or the new but, I like this
I love it, all of the new stuff is so good. Cannot wait.
All the old stuff is really good too by the way. Here for the ride!
I can easily live with the band moving completely into this direction in future albums. Stellar sound!
HUGE!
dope track
Killing it
Love it much more than Great Mass of Color
I didn't know Deafheaven used clean vocals, such a awesomely unique sound!
IN BLUR!!!
Isso que é shoegaze gostoso de escutar
lol não aprendas o que é shoegaze que não é preciso cromo
@@miguelgomes6849 ok.
While my personal preference will always be for the heavier stuff, I really admire the creativity, and willingness to try a new direction.
Two months later, and I love it. Just took a while...
Same for me, at first i couldn't get into it well, but when i listened to it last night, that was something else, maybe lots of bands tried this kind of music but for me it still has unique vibe of Deafheaven.
💛
Wonderful, Almost a more Shoegazey take on modern Enslaved!
EPIC
You aren't Trve Kvlt until you make a clean/mellow album.
Man, seeing this live with that ending would be a quasi-spiritual experience no doubt. Hope they are able to come back to the UK soon
I hope this isn’t the ONLY thing they do on the new album. My favorite is New Bermuda. If that album mingled with a couple of segues like this then it would rule but if it’s JUST this I’m not sure how I’d feel.
This is what you're getting, they've confirmed it in interviews.
Respect for their old work but as a shoegaze fan the cuts from this recent album are far and away the best I've heard from them.
@@ravenkliff sunbather is a far better shoegaze record than this
New Bermuda is their best
My new favorite song, along with the rest of the new album! ;)
