Even though Hornby was objectively lazy with what they did to make their models, I can understand why. It was the 1980’s, and they already had a bunch of toolings lying around. Why not cut costs and just use them instead of spend money making new ones? They’re models made for children, it’s not like they’re really going to care about the accuracy of their Thomas models. Plus, it makes them stand out a lot more and makes them much more unique.
I love the Bachmann engines because they look fantastic with the exception of Thomas and Percy’s face. I also love Hornby Stepney and Murdoch, I hope to find both soon.

I don't really think it's as simple as "Bachmann is better" or "Hornby is better". In the end, I'd say it really comes down to your tastes. If you want your engines to look more like the TV series, then get Bachmann. If you want something closer to The Railway Series or real life engines, then Hornby's probably more your style. Personally, though, I prefer Bachmann. *Emily is an exception to the statement above. The Hornby version looks terrible and lesser than the Bachmann version no matter how you slice it.
i do agree with you 100% when it comes to emily, hornby did a terrible job on her no matter what people say, bachmann however did an amazing job on her.
It really comes down to the fact that Bachmann builds their trains to fit the Thomas & Friends Cartoon as it's sold in America. Hornby focuses on building their trains as Reverend Awdry meant for them to look - British Rail Heritage brought to life. Their pieces feature far more historically accurate detail. However, they do lack entertaining features such as moving eyes. A nice clear gloss coat could bring out a shine in their paint.
Bachmann is just better the Hornby range on average as some Hornby ones are good but Edward is terrible bill ben and Toby are way too big bachmann just get it right they look so much more like the tv show characters
I can think of one Hornby one that you don't have. For a while in the late 90s they did a version of Thomas on their standard 0-4-0 chassis that was included in the R.712 train set. Probably quite a rare one for you to add to the collection.
The Hornby Bill, Ben and Toby are so giant because they were actually originally made as clockwork/wind up toys and not OO scale models. Hornby simply reused the tooling from the clockwork toys and stuck electric chassis under them, that's why they're so out of scale!
I think another difference too is that the Bachmann ones look like they're the classic version of the characters while Hornby might be based off their Season 8 deign. But I think diesel is the switched one (meaning the Hornby is the classic version while the Bachmann looks like him from the CGI series.)
I am Dreaming for a collection like this. But despite bachmann being more accurate, hornby engines are heavier, stronger, realistic and more charming. My favourite Hornby models are Henry, Murdoch and the Flying Scotsman, also My favourite Bachmann models are Thomas, Edward, Emily, Donald, Douglas, Skarloey and Rheneas!
I prefer the Bachmann locomotives 1. They are most like the classic TV show, probably one of the most accurate in the world 2. Bachmann faithfully recreated almost every detail about the models 3. The slow crawl speed is FANTASTIC for realism 4. They are all very smooth runners with little to no confusion or delay 5. The colours are spot on if not very close to the actual models
The Bachman Locomotives may look cool or powerful but I’ve heard they are heavier than the Hornby models. With the Thomas from Hornby able to carry 11 coaches where as the Bachman Thomas can only hold 5
Great collection sir! Pleasure watching this. From what I can see that’s missing is the newer 2015+ uk hornby versions of the “big 6” (Thomas and Percy with white running plates. Henry, Gordon, James and Edward all with lighter paint and ddc ready) YOU MAY POSSIBLY HAVE THAT EDWARD FROM CLOSER INSPECTION.. Also there are two very early versions of hornby Thomas too 1985 (both have variants of faces- one with a truly terrifying smile!) hope this helps you with your collection.

Both companies did an excellent job on representing the Thomas franchise, and these are my reviews: Hornby - Hornby's models are more representative of both real life and the rws versions. Most of them look excellent (obviously Emily's an exception, that's a given), but there are others that aren't that great. Dart is much too long, 'Arry and Bert were obviously going to be Splodge (look at the faces) but were then recoloured, Oliver is more representative of the TVS and his green just doesn't look right, Spencer's front is way too horizontal, Bill and Ben are rather large for their basis and Toby is massively too tall. Scotsman face isn't great, and Percy seems kind of large, but why on earth did they not make Donald and Douglas?! However, they make up for it with some amazing models. Murdoch, Stepney, D261 and Bear are fabulous models that Bachmann didn't make, and Henry, Gordon, James, Duck and Edward look amazing. Overall, I rate them with a 6/10. A lot of their models weren't great, and they really cheaped out on Emily, but they make up for it with some other marvelous recreations. Bachmann - Bachmann's models are more representative of the TVS, and they have much more effort in them. However, they too have flaws. The Class 08's look largely over scale, whereas Percy looks largely under scale. James seems very short, and Oliver seems much smaller than Duck, when really they should be the same size. Terence seems rather wide, and don't even get me started on Paxton and Percy's faces. Just ew. Yet their over models greatly overpower the bad ones. Just so you know, the reason that hornby used existing models is for two reasons, 1, they were wanting realistic versions of the models and 2, it was in the 1990s. (I think). I think it's more easier to say 009 for Skarloey and the other small engines. 009 is narrow gauge trains that are in scale with 00 gauge locos. They do have a special version of track which the sleepers look like narrow gauge rails but they're a bit pricy so standard n gauge track is better. If you do want more narrow gauge track you can buy starter / expansion kits by Kato and Peco.
The Bachmann trains are probably the most show accurate models anybody can buy. The Hornby ones are unique takes on the designs though, and are in most cases stronger than the Bachmann ones.
I only have the Bachman Douglas and the Hornby new style Edward, Percy and Thomas, as well as the Hornby Annie, Clarabel and the mail coach and 2 faceless trucks from bachmann

Hornby D261 is great, correct livery, accurate face. but such a shame that Hornby made him with Class 37 tooling despite he is Class 40. I suggest to anyone if you wanted a correct basis to buy a green Class 40 and mold D261'S face and put it on the class 40.

The Hornby Trains I must say are accurate to REAL trains but Bachman takes the cake with Details that are exactly like the show. Hornby honestly looks cheaper. And not only that but the Hornby ones have gotten alot of complaints, for instance Leokim's Video about his Hornby Thomas missing his Traction Tires!!

The Bachmann James for me is the only one I dislike out of the Bachmann range.

I love the Hornby Thomas
Why it’s long I know it’s from 1984 but it’s kind of ugly
@@pooker1574 the Hornby thomas is portrayed an E2, so they made it a REAL E2. And that’s what an E2 looks like

To be honest, I hated (ok disliked)both characters although I do think Rebeccas paint scheme is pretty friggin cool looking.
@@ghostengineer I’m not fond of them either. Replacing not one but two of the original engines is a big no
I dpn’t think they will for a long time. They still have loads of model engines to go (Boco,Murdoch,Stepney,Arthur,Harvey, Diesel 10,Lady,Splatter and Dodge, Fergus, Arthur & the HiT era characters(If they even make them, which I doubt they will)
Overall, I like MOST of the Hornby trains compared to the Bachmann trains(but that’s just my opinion)

fun fact: hornby is actually lazy and just repainted and/or replaced some parts of existing trains they had so thats why some of the hornby thomas and friends characters r messed up/different liverys of train so yes.
Did you know originally the hornby arry and Bert were originally going to be splatter and dodge.

Hornby henry looks like the real life and Bachmann Henry looks like the the model tv show

The Hornsby Arry and Bert have splatter and dodges faces
the bachmann ones look like the original thomas characters but the hornby one have better mechanism and run alot better
I love the hornby flying Scotsman with a face I wish they still sold him I have the hornby flying Scotsman without a face but I wish I could collect all the versions that's my favorite engine in real life and in Thomas and friends
I like Hornby cus they made the models bigger and more realistic

The Hornby Trains I must say are accurate to REAL trains but Bachman takes the cake with Details that are exactly like the show.
Hornby honestly looks cheaper.
And not only that but the Hornby ones have gotten alot of complaints, for instance Leokim's Video about his Hornby Thomas missing his Traction Tires!!
