In the Netherlands we have a specific outdoor chain that during Black Friday promotes Green Friday. You can bring your damaged outdoor gear (shoes, jackets, sleeping bags etc.) and the store repairs it for free! It doesn't even have to be stuff you bought at their store, just as long as it's outdoor gear.

I think a Finnish brand did something similar too!
And a lot of especially smaller local brands actively share that they're not a part of black Friday because they don't want to be associated with the spending frenzy

One of my fav brands, a swedish clothing brand called Woolpower closed down their webshop on black friday and instead directed to buy their products from a Swedish second hand site. Very anti-ad but at least to me it carries a different punch when the products are actually somewhat ethically made. 🤷

A follow-up video on Patagonia would be great!
I am trying to buy more sustainably and for many items of active wear and outdoor gear secondhand is not really an option. So the best choice seems to be to find the most ethically produced brand I can. I have a lot of trust in Patagonia and I have not been convinced that any other widely available brand compares. Would be very interested to hear more analysis on whether Patagonia is continuing to improve and innovate on sustainability.

This is exactly why I reached out to you! As a brand owner attempting to bring mindfulness while designing has been exhausting. Morally I feel caught and it almost feels impossible to be a designer and protect the environment. I’ve thought about giving it up completely. I’d really love to pick your brain!

I'm proud to say I did not participate in black Friday whatsoever! Even though I actually had spare money at the time. I just don't have the space in my tiny apartment to impulse buy anything right now anyway, haha.

I saw the IKEA ad and couldn't quite figure out why it rubbed me the wrong way. Like you said there´s nothing specifically greenwashy about it. But it's the working toward changing the associations of IKEA in the minds of the consumer. I fully agree that the campaign will be effective. I heard several groups at work talking about it after black friday. It ends up being subIiminal and something that happens without concious thought.
I would love to see a Patagonia revisited video. In general i find the intersection of marketing and sustainability fascinating!
ironically i found your channel through the video you did with IKEA back in the day...

I think this is the new greenwashing. What's better they don't need to create bogus sertificates! They can go around so many marketing laws as well. I might be wrong, but isn't EU trying to stop greenwashing adds? Like the companies actually need to have some proof of what they say and not just by the? Image is always what marketing sells and this is kinda twisted brilliancy that horrifies me.

Hii I'd like to make a video suggestion explaining the environmental impact of each mainstream diet (omnivorous, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian etc), I really like how you explain and show studies regarding the subjects you bring.

Ikea isn't the first to do ads saying they have low Black Friday-like prices all year around. We have a discount store that did such marketing like two years ago.

I feel like an alien when I watch videos like this because it makes it so acutely aware I only sporadically/rarely react to “reverse psychology” like a regular human being and it’s really uncomfortable
Not trying to sell to me just makes me go “ok”. It’s like when UA-cam ads say shit like “you’re so totally gonna skip this ad so skip it and miss out.” My brain just goes “yes, like always”. I take the “seeking no intrigue from you” too literally or something

It's just too obvious in a lot of cases that end up promoting that specific product they told you not to buy after all. I think the ones that are using sustainability as a hook can work to make the brand seem cool and environmentally conscious. ...or if done badly it will just look like hyprocritical greenwashing

The first example of anti-ads I saw was in an old donald duck comics. I assume even in the '70 or '80 some businesses employed this strategy.
The strength of IKEA, imo, is in the combination of small entry prices with furniture that is just strong and stable. Also, it has a good stable base of products and most of their products interoperare really well with one another, something that doesn't happen with other brands in the same price range.
Having had experience with other furniture brands, some cheaper and some more expensive, they either feel flimsier than the Ikea counterpart or they are less versatile (or outrageously more expensive just because they have a designer name stamped on). I don't know of any sustainable brand of furniture though, but I assume those would be out of my budget.

hi, i'd love a Patagonia video! I'm definitely one of the consumers that perceive it as "more sustainable" than a lot of their competitors (not that I can afford to buy their stuff atm lol) so I would really appreciate a deep dive :D

6:40 NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR ENGLISH NOT BEING YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE / THE LANGUAGE YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE IN. The world is very English-centric at the moment (major languages used in the world changes ever couple 100 years, it used to be French not so long ago) and 80% of the world's population does not use English as their first language. Always good to keep in mind.

Here in the UK we have a spread, typically put on toast called Marmite (similar to Vegemite if you’ve heard of that). The adverts shown on television created this whole mythos - do you love or hate it? The “hate” adverts were always funny and definitely a conversation starter. It was surprising at the time to see a company intentionally diss their own product, but of course the main objective was to get it back in the spotlight and now there’s Marmite flavoured everything it seems! 😂 The ironic thing is quite a few people are just ambivalent about it, but the whole Team Love/Team Hate is marketing genius. (I love it btw)

After you described anti-ads I immediately thought of that Levi’s add where they show some guy trading his horse for a pair of Levi’s. I think the anti-ad takeaway was supposed to be something like, “they last so long you only need to buy them once per century” 😂

I heard about EU is aiming to achieve circularity (circular economy) meaning no more waste to the landfills ideally.
I kinda bet government also is pushing this trend, but who am I to say. I suppose Green washing is still good as companies still try to achieve that to be a part of the trend. I’m an industrial designer, so this is still I need to know (as a trend), lol.

The French Agency for Ecological transition released an anti-ad campaign that was quite good, where an "unsalesman" goes around shops and convinces people not to buy things. The clothing and commerce reps were very angry, the Minister of Economy spoke against the campaign, and in the end the Minister of Ecological transition and the Agency had to apologise for the campaign being inappropriate.
