@@irisjoves7419 they supposedly have biodegradable plastic, but you need the right microbes. Same with pods for dishwashing and clothes washing.
My question is if the microbes are in the usual water treatment plants (my water treatment plant has not answered my query).

I would say many of us are using way too much toothpaste. Toothpaste would be significantly less wasteful if we just used the right amount as you said. Typically I've seen dentists say a pea size amount. Many of us (including myself previously) will apply as much toothpaste as will fit on the tooth brush - even in your stock footage this is how the toothpaste is applied. I was personally surprised when told by my dentist that the reason my teeth were hurting was actually because I was brushing with a hard toothbrush and using too much toothpaste. It is the brushing technique rather than the toothpaste amount that is important for cavity prevention. The toothpaste is essentially for flavoring and for fluoride, but also the fluoride can only get significantly absorbed by your teeth if you let the residual toothpaste sit on your teeth after brushing without drinking/rinsing for some time.

I have tried tooth tabs several times off and on but bc of my disability I have decided to stick with tooth paste and floss pics/water flosser to make life easier for me. I will support anyone trying to be more sustainable and remind my daughter when she's older to NOT leave the water running while brushing. Thanks for the continued education on sustainability. :)

I completely agree with you, G (as per usual).
I have a B.S. in chemistry and a masters in chemical engineering, and it is absurd that this research did not use either a) the same mass of tooth cleaner for each product or b) the mass of tooth cleaner needed to reliably clean your teeth (like you said). That's just bad research; and probably was framed that way to show how much "worse" toothpaste tabs are. Also hilarious that the ReCiPe point differences were so negligible, but they used tabs that were twice the mass of toothpaste used.
Just from those choices made by the researchers, it is obvious they were conducting biased research.
Keep up the good work:) Your ability to spread information and articulate your opinions so beautifully are true gifts.

I'm autistic and have sensory issues. I have been using the same toothpaste for years. It comes in a non-recyclable tube, but I'm not sure if I would be able to change it, because I have tried other toothpastes, and I have found it awful.

And your well-being and mental health is also important. I think it's stressful enough to navigate a world that isn't designed for neurodivergent persons.
And having to stand a horrible taste in your mouth two or three times a day and having stress because of it - can't be good.
There are for sure other parts in your life where you can look for more sustainibility that don't have such a negative impact on you. Or maybe even bring you positive feelings. Try focussing on that.

Same for me (autistic, sensory issues). I do have a prefered tooth paste. I also have tablets but I can't always use them. Not in the morning. I tried. I use half a tablet to make it less grainy but still it is not possible to use them daily.

I have a toothpaste I've been using for almost 2 decades prescribed to me by my dentist and I buy right from my dentist not in a store or online as it's not something the average consumer can find, being prescription grade. At first I used enough toothpaste to cover the top of the toothbrush, but after I went through the 1st tube too quickly my dentist talked to me about how not just with the toothpaste he was giving me but with all toothpastes in general you don't need much to get the job done. The size of the toothbrush is to make sure you can get all your teeth, it's not the amount of toothpaste you need. In fact, scientifically speaking, you only need toothpaste to cover less than 1/4th of the top of your toothbrush. Jus a slight dab, barely enough to have any foam in your mouth, and it gets the job done and cleans your teeth to dental satisfaction. It's also half the size of one dental tab. How sustainable you are is not about what product you use, but how much of the product you use. One of my toothpaste tubes, which are the same size as what can be found in stores, will last me 4ish years with daily use.

You don't mention who sponsored this study, and I'm suspicious, because they've leveled factors like end of life disposal and miles traveled, which are not equally problematic in the real world, especially when you accounting for the comparative weight of the items. This is what I'd do if I were trying to make a worse product look like a better choice.

I was waiting for my toothpaste to finish, just to buy denttabs :D This is a question I ask myself when traditional and green-claimed products appear to have the same impact: are the factors that have impact all the same? For example, in this case: the plastic produced for paste that ends in landfills will ALWAYS be there, unless we find some bacteria that digest plastic producing non-impact waste, but we have power on the factors regarding factory management, water usage, resources ecc, because we can change with policies and laws how these practices are conducted, reducing the impact, so that with tabs we don't have the plastic issue and the other issues can be addressed. With al the problems solved, paste will always come in plastic tubes. Is it a valid thought?

Something that's never sat right with me (as someone living in northern Europe) is bamboo toothbrushes because bamboo can't be farmed anywhere near me and it doesn't make sense to be importing a material from across the globe when we could be using local/ish wood instead. I imagine you'll touch on this in the cotton buds deep dive, but thought I'd add my comment here on the topic of dental health. Thank you for doing the deep dives and looking into scientific reports - I really appreciate it!

also where I live tabs are onyl available at our refill shop, which restricts who can get them, but also purchasing them from the refill store as opposed to a grocery chain helps support the small buisness which often struggles. Also my dental health has improved on tabs, even though they took me a long time to get used to texture wise.

I use denttabs for about 6 or 7 years now and I still love them. Even my son uses the ones with strawberry taste. Crazy that it's not more sustainable than toothpaste. But the real benefit to stick with them is the feeling. My teeth are so clean and smooth every day like I had a professional cleaning at the dentist. (Which I don't need anymore because of using denttabs) And my dentist is very happy with my teeth too. I like to use the wingbrush dental floss (watermelon mint flavor) afterwards, because it cleans the interdental space so thoroughly like no other.
I think I didn't understand the reason why the test results say that toothtabs are not more sustainable like toothpaste. Maybe because I'm not an English native speaker. Can somebody explain it?
Toothpaste contains microplastic inside and is packed in plastic. And (if you use Colgate) it's produced in South America. So for Europeans its a long distance for shipping. Denttabs are produced in Poland and don't contain any plastics. So where does the impact come from?

maybe the mining of the minerals? or/and the overal weight of the raw materials - if toothaste is 40-60% water - there is much less minerals/bicarb etc in the tube than the concentrated tabs - - maybe only use 1/2 a tab each time instead...

If you decide to do wash sheets-can you also do wash balls? I have been using one for more then a year and I love it. There is no residue or smell (alergies, sensory issues) and the refills are like 4 times per year (I do just top the tiny balls inside once in a while) so it is also way less expensive then detergent.

Thanks for spreading the word on the complexity of sustainability, for all the research you do for your videos and highlighting the responsibility we have as consumers. I work in the lca field and usually yes: the user phase is one of the stages that has the highest impact. I think most companies could use a tailoring of their use instructions so that customers know how to lower the impact of their products and gain general knowledge of what "the environmental impact of a product" aka lca, actually means. Besides, very few companies out there are transparent about the sourcing of their ingredients (less than 1% of the companies?). So we have a long way to go as customers to demand more transparency from companies. It's a one way journey starting to think on lca terms 😂 Thanks a lot!

To be honest I don't think they ever will. Just because it's a world known brand, involved in marketing, capitalism, animal testing .... the few companies who are producing toothtabs are independent ones, you can usually buy their products only in zero waste shops or ethical online stores.

Thank you for this informative video. These issues are rarely straightforward. Due to some serious dental issues I can’t use the tabs and use paste instead. In an effort to get the most possible from each tube, when the tube is almost empty and I can’t squeeze anymore out I smooth the tube out by pushing whatever is left inside to the top and then cut near the top with scissors. I find that there is usually enough paste left there for at least six more uses.

Thank for another interesting video :) I do like toothtabs for traveling mostly and then use them at home, I tend to switch back to toothpaste whenever I can't find toothtabs in local shops due to being out of stock (the packaging might be biodegradable, unsure just now). I also do like the texture of toothpaste in my mouth better sometimes than the tabs that you have to chew first. My fav toothpaste from Kingfisher (unsure if they're packaging is recyclable though) taste for fennel which is sooo nice. To get out every remaining bit of toothpaste I always cut it open at the top and the sides, leaving the tube 0% empty :D

Love that you're deep diving stuff like this! ❤
One other concern I've heard about tooth tabs -- I've heard that brushing with sodium bicarb (baking soda) can damage the enamel on your teeth. Which kinda makes sense, bc that stuff is crazy abrasive. 😅 I love it for cleaning tough scum out of sinks, etc.
So yeah if it's a product that's eventually doing damage to your teeth, it's not really sustainable, is it?
Then again, I don't know for sure that's what's happening. I've never asked an actual dentist. If you do a follow-up on this video at a later point, I'd love to see discussion of this included!

Oooh yes! This is a topic I have thought a lot about since I first read about dental tabs in your book! Have been trying different tabs, roothpastes and powder since then. I guess the good news is that there is a recycling program here in Sydney called 'BRAD' by 'Banish' who take in used roothpaste tubes among other hard-to-recycle things!
Was also interested in another aspect of this comparison regarding whether the product is vegan or not and what difference that might make 🌿
Would also love to know more about laundry sheets AND dishwasher sheets! (Maybe you've already covered that?)

Thanks for your efford to pronuounce all those complicated words! ❤
Also that people just draw conclusions and repost studies without reading them and at least the abstract (even better would be additionally the method and discussion) is something that bothers me, too. I mean, I get it, science papers are sometimes overwhelming and even borring to read, especially in a acience you don't know much about, but if you repost a so called "fact" and article you should have at least some basic knowledge about it. So thank you for your detailed and critical review!
When you mentioned the 2 min water running time, I thought they maybe have made an average assumption with people letting the water run the whole 3 min they are brushing their teeth and others only using the minimum of water. But when it turned out they had a toothbrushing time of 2 min I got really confused about their assumptions. But as it is often in science, assumptions are made to make something calculatable but it doesn't fit reality that great in the end.😂😅

Why do people even turn on the water before they start brushing their teeth? In high school I began skipping the wet the toothbrush step out of laziness and never went back. It's just unnecessary, unless you use tabs I suppose. Toothpaste is wet, your mouth is wet. I just brush my teeth and only turn on the water once I'm done. Is there a reason other people do it differently?

I’m not sure, but I think that what really gets plaque and bacteria off your teeth is the toothbrush, not the toothpaste. I’ve read that you can brush without any toothpaste (just wetting the toothbrush) for 2 minutes and you will do an effective job of getting your teeth clean. And don’t forget to floss first. Anyone know if this is true?

I'm a dental nurse, and unfortunately, no. Water is not good enough, as it cannot get rid of the bacteria. As Gittemary says at the end of the video, the absolute best thing for protecting your teeth from cavities is fluoride toothpaste. Plaque is also sticky, and water cannot remove enough of it by itself. I use tooth tabs with fluoride, and my dentist and hygienist (who are also my colleagues) are both really impressed with how healthy my teeth and gums are. Basically, fluoride toothpaste, used for 2mins twice a day, only spat out, not rinsed out with either water or mouthwash, and making sure to brush the gums as well, and as you correctly said; flossing before brushing, is the best way to keep your teeth clean and cavity free, and avoid gum disease.

@@ecofriendlyadventures5154 Thanks so much for your knowledgeable reply! That’s good to know. Currently I use fluoride toothpaste after flossing, and then I rinse with Listerine. And I go for dental cleanings twice a year. I’ve thought about trying out the tabs, as the foam from toothpaste makes me gag if I use too much at once. Means one tube lasts a long time, though, lol. Thanks again! Have a great day!

just because something is better doesn't mean it's perfect it's good to be critical, you need to be aware of consequences of your choices, maybe for someone it would be better choice to use toothpaste and use the remaining money (even if it's not a lot) for some charity

i think it totally skews the data when they're factoring in people leaving the water running the whole time they're brushing their teeth for? who in their right mind does that???? also factoring in the recycling of the glass jar?? for example, the bite brand- u get a glass jar one time and then the refills are sent in compostable packaging, so in the multiple years ive used it for, i haven't had to recycle anything after im done with it...whereas a toothpaste tube will exist for like ever?? i definitely still feel like tooth tabs are a much better option.
and funny your dentist said not to consume fluoride as, im sure you know, the water in the states has fluoride added into it lol. they're just poisoning us over here! thankfully my water filter removes the fluoride, but most people just drink it daily. if it really helped our teeth, wouldn't no americans have dental problems?

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  7 місяців тому +1

Yes I know that flouride is added to tap water, however the concentrations are vastly different, making consuming toothpaste quite detrimental, there are also some studies that suggest that using fluoride locally (toothpaste) is more effective than adding it to the water

It's mentally easy to stop at "less plastic = good for the environment" but why not keep the brain power going as far as we can to tease out these issues? I appreciate these deep dives so much as someone who has been trying different ways to be more sustainable but feeling skeptical about advertising and all the green washing out there!
