The best preamp ever made
These are my favorite types of gear videos. Just a musician having fun kicking ass with awesome tools.
Kid in a candy store
I'm just here for the lego pirate ship!
That thing was a BEAST to build
Love the Whitesnake!
Great playing!!!
Thanks a lot!
Love is in the heart of a Mesa 🤘🤘🤘
Best preamp ever.
Glad I got one of these for little money. Nowadays you won’t find one under 1100$. My favorite preamp ( and the quad which I also have) but you’ll have to spend some time to dial it in. My studio pre is the main profile on my Kemper as well
IMO one of the best sounding preamps ever created! I will never sell mine! I combine it with a Rocktron Valvesonic Plexi thru a 60's stereo tube poweramp!
It's the gold standard!
Whitesnake 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
PRS CE into a Boogie Studio preamp with Quadraverb GT in effects loop, using speaker sim in the GT and using the speaker emulated outs of the preamp was the first direct rig I ever used -- stacking the cab sims gave them a steep enough roll-off to be pretty usable.
Hi Leon! Gotta love a musician that smiles when they play! Thanks for sharing brother and Be Well All!
I’ve been enjoying my studio pre a lot lately, made a playing only video with it too. It’s super versatile once you figure out the interactive balancing act.
Yeah it's done! Oh and what a tone! 👍
Last thing i'll spect was a crunchy/cleanish tone and it's soooooo good. Love It. Amazing play too
The "rhythm" channel does the Fendery thing so well
@@LeonTodd but It's like a crunch mode in the same channel or only with the gain knob?
Your guitar faces show how great is the studio preamp! I love mine!!!
Pretty sure it wouldn't sound half as sweet without that lego set on the top
I think that's where I'm going wrong with mine
Get some of that barracuda sizzle in there
I got one it is a KEEPER piece of gear .....fantastic Mark Series piece .....Killer tones mate \-/
Fire.
I lucked into one of these for $300 in the mid 2000s when I was in high school. Absolute beast and one of those pieces of kit that will "tell on you". Made me have to tighten up my playing because any mistake came through clear as day.
Need to pull that thing out of storage next time I'm at my dad's house. Forgot how good these were.
It's very close to the preamp from a Mesa Mark IIC+ which is arguably the most desirable high gain amp ever - fire the beast up!
@@LeonTodd oh most definitely, I ran mine through the power section of my dad's old Peavey VT Classic 410 open back with a Rivera 212 closed back. Huge sound with that open back/closed back combo. Could run the same rig with jazz band at school then take it to my buddies garage and play metal after class haha
I bought one around the same time; I wanna say early 2004 or late 2003 for around the same price. I wanna say I was running it into the power amp section of my dual rectifier at the time. I was in a thrash metal band playing in drop C, looking for a super tight and aggressive rythm tone. The Studio pre did a good job, but I sold both that and my dual rec once I acquired a VHT/Fryette Pittbull UL.
@@SluggerStark yeah, I bought a modded dual rectifier a few years back but honestly, the mark series sound of the studio pre just "does" it for me more.
It's still in storage at my dad's along with a Rivera S120 lol
@@Terribleguitarist89 That is awesome you kept yours. Hang on to it!
I bought my dual, because at the time, that was the grail amp for punk rock and metal. Or so I thought. Either way, I was doing so much to that dual to get the "sound in my head" ya know? Boosting the front end and running an eq through the loop. The VHT was completely the "sound in my head" for that time, as was the Mark series stuff. If I had known back then what I really wanted, I likely would have picked up a Mk4 instead of the recto. Funny thing though: now I kinda have a new appreciation for recto and what they are and can do. The new multi-watt ones are all kinds of awesome!!
Insane how much you can tweak that thing
Wicked!! And now the Axe-Fx 😁🤘
Keep rocking Leon!!!! amazing tone! thanks for share it.
Great opening jam Leon! Love the pirate ship. "Where did all the gold de blooms go?. Rock on sir!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Rack gear rules !!!###
That PRS + Mesa combo is killer Leon! Sooo good! Keep rocking man
Life affirming instruments!
I have one that we modded to 2C+ circuit. Smoothes out the hairiness of the gain and just sounds fantastic. Only caveat is it leaves a lot of gain on the clean channel. I can’t get as clean as yours now but what a tone!
Leon n da house home skillets!!
Hmmm Maybe Leon is using some of his ad sense money for lego's! I approve :D
Hey Leon, I like your playing!!
Hey, thanks!
Great way to start my morning, got coffee, after your video, I'll go knock out some of those chorizo, potato and egg breakfast tacos.😬😁👍👍👍
Breakfast tacos make life worth living
Ain't no-o loooooove... to Battery. Dude...🤘🏻
Sounds killer! I think we spoke briefly about these on TGP (Fatbagg). Love it, as always.
I've been on the hunt for a studio 22+ for years. Probably have to settle for a 6506mh instead.
Well worth hunting for ... I heard one live years back; bought one the next week 👊🏼👌🏼
Leon, do you know? I just ordered one off Reverb, as to lighten the load when gigging. Not crazy about taking both my Germinos to gigs, so.......... for my clean sounds which are washed in parallel Roland Digital Delays I do an Allan Holdsworth type setup for the clean sheens, the Studio Preamp will do the trick. One of my Germino's handle the soloing, rock crunchy stuff... can't live without the response of a pushed Plexi. So I am excited little bruv.
That's gonna be a great rig!
Leon Todd great job man =)
Glad you enjoyed it!
I had that and the triaxis on the same time, I liked the studio a lot better. Live it was a bit more vibrant but I would do the triaxis for metal because it was colder more sterile and it had presets...
The studio preamp was as weird as a boogie can be, one day it worked and one it didn't so much however it sounded great.
A cool secret was not to use the solid state buffered a and b stereo outs with their pots but take the effects loop out. Much more open sound. Sweeter and richer on the top end somehow.
The clean side pushed and with a pedal does a great plexi in a box impression if needs be. It's a great box, just one sound at a time as a focus.
I'm advertising using it via that fx loop trick, so much easier to use IMO. Great piece of gear, scratches the mark series itch for me.
LEON!!!
Funny how it can sound like a marshall as well! It doesnt restrict to that typical super scooped tone mesa boogie has in general.
Their rectifiers might default to that, and try scooped sound might be how a lot of people use the mark series but they are way more versatile than that. The studio pre is basically a mark series preamp.
@@seanmackay6739 ohhh thanks
Yeah the Recto's are totally different beasts to the Marks. T-Rex vs Velociraptor

Oh my friend and kind sir I saw this vid and my heart smiled. Needed this at this early hour with my coffee since I’m not feeling well. Arthritis is kicking my ass! I’ll be ok though after this rain and humid weather is over! ❤️✌️👍 That preamp rocks man! Loving those tunes your playing! Brings back fond memories! Were you going thru your Marshall cab and sm 57 or straight into the interface with and IR?
I own one of these because I bought it years ago after it had a name and it was cheaper. Honestly, i don't like the sound that much. It's got a lot of rasp to it, but I'm sure I could dial it in if my domestic situation wasn't.....non loud guitar conducive. I'm going to unload mine if anyone's in Seattle. I wonder what a good Les Paul sounds like through it. I would need to get it looked at. Maybe I won't sell it. Takes work to buy cool things.
Which do you like the most. Mark IV or the Studio Preamp. I know you like both!! But I’m thinking the preamp is not cheap. Just get the Mark IV.
Channel 2 on the IV gives it an edge of the studio IMO
*Our beloved ADA MP-1
I see our blinking behind you. It's saying "Use me too".
Soooon!
And the retail value of a Studio Preamp just went up by another 20 lpercent....
I hope so...have had one since '87, and am looking to move it...along with a MB Fifty/Fifty preamp.
Doesn't sound like most other mesa tones at all. It kinda reminds me of a weird Hafler preamp from the 90's. Is there power tube saturation happening here or maybe one of the post gain stage tubes are clipping. Sounds cool whatever it is.
Add 9 - IIc+ 290 = Boogielicious
You can take that to the bank kids
License to print money
Thrash kicks in , Video fades out....... you bastard...... 😆
I need to do a tallica tone vid with this
100%
As usual great video. Thank you very much for the content and the good times.
Isn't this preamp the one Kurt Cobain used or am I wrong? It would be cool having your insight on Grunge and those guitar sounds and gear.
Correct, DS-1 into a studio pre!
Hello Leon can you share the settings for the John Sykes tone you are using with the studio Preamp?
LT! Sweet as usual Mate, Whats she plugged into?
Axe Fx Metallica video!
Leon, when you sit down to do a video, what determines which guitar you choose to play? If you had to choose, Mesa Boogie Pre or ADA MP-1?
Nice video, refreshing to hear no speaking.
This or the triaxis?
When you use the silent recording out do you add only an IR in your daw or olso the power amp section?
What was the signal path on this recording?
Hi. how will this amp sound with the recording outs straight to a focusrite interface, you think?
I was a bit "mmmmeh" in the beginning but turned out to be a "Ouuuuuh" 😁🔥🔥🔥
We used it on it's own through line out for this EP. Best thing in the world. frowningrelique.bandcamp.com/releases

The only saving grace is once all this idiocy comes to an end there are going to be some musicians headed to the studios that are going to be some finely tuned weapons with all the practice.
