Being prepared for the season (and comfort) is an adult thing and personally satisfying. I follow a shirt cycle so I generally wear them in order. This means many shirts wear-out at the same time (a bad thing) but then I also don't keep items I no longer like (a good thing). Trousers are coordinated with shirts. Hope this idea helps viewers who like more structure in this part of life. Everyone - find a good tailor - taste is personal but not fit.
You do such a great job with your interior design, but I'd love to give a gentle suggestion - a blue duvet or blue throw on your bed would tie everything together ao nicely. I really hope I don't sound like a troll.

Loved this, would like to see more like it! I especially appreciate that you mention the names of the stores where you bought them. I'm on a weight loss odyssey, so continually purging but also looking for good opportunities to upgrade.

I find myself moving in the opposite direction. I dig patterned shirts-not over the top, mind you-but designs with interest, texture, and color play. I like them under solid knits, shackets, or blazers. My patterns of choice are paisley, geometrics, windowpanes, and, yes, florals. As I am not wearing neckties all that much anymore, I have concentrated on the shirt as the focal point of many ensembles.
But, hey, that's just me.

You have a great sence of style which suits me well too , but keep the yellow. Its a great fit and it can work when you want to switch up your look occassionally or push your boundaries very slightly. It does not look gaudy or tacky

With the Cherry shirt, you can spill BBQ on it at the picnic and no one will ever know. Haha. Actually, I thought the Cherry stood out in the video. It's a keeper, for sure. And I liked the yellow polo too.

GUILTY, I need to purge and clean out my closet, I haven’t done this in a few years. I find it difficult to let go of perfectly good clothes but it will get done soon. Thanks for the reminder and inspiration….👍

John, this is one of your best and most helpful videos to me! Great idea - you taking us through your thought process of deciding what to keep and what to toss helps inform me as I will do the same shortly in my closest. Like you, I used to wear patterns, but I have gravitated to more solids the last couple of years. I’m more about wearing different textures. Thanks again John! Live well!

Every year you should upgrade your closet.
Now you can go out and get some new stuff. I purged some stuff that didn't fit good anymore myself either too big or shrunk over time. Cheaper quality items
I really need to do this. Stuff I haven't worn, or no longer fits, needs to go, or be packed away... No I really did this about 20 months ago. But it's been a weird time since then... Time to do it again.
Even tho this was about purging, there were some great ideas in there, as always, thank you. I think a few of the 'go aways' might've made the cut if you were wearing dark pants.

I’m not sure where you live. But if you have a bulk dry cleaner that charges like $3.00 per piece. If you take your clothes for a pick me up. Take it to the dry cleaner, the return like New again. Another tip if you wash your clothes always air dry on hanger…

I just went through and did a spring cleaning of my wardrobe of stuff i never wear as well felt good to get rid of extra crap ha
I've been doing it recently, and have moved away from patterns completely. It's liberating to have a complete clearout, but you do have to be ruthless.

To fix that awesome shirt that doesn't have the gauntlet button, fold the sleeve at the cuff, then repeat and fold it again. A perfect length usually and is the only way I've cuffed sleeves since I found that about 20+ years ago now. Don't toss it on that account until you try this first!
I already did this a few weeks ago. Got the winter stuff (mostly) put away, put the spring/summer stuff out... and gave away several things that I don't wear and seem dated. I also did the same thing you did when it came to certain patterns. They just seemed out of style.

Since I retired I've got a whole lot of formal clothes I probably should get rid of. But I'd decided years ago just not to buy excessively fashionable clothes because I knew I'd only wear them for a year and then get rid of them. And I never had that much money I could afford to do that. Some things I had to get rid of - when I was a youth I was a 31 waist. I went to get a pair of new trousers. I told the guy I was 31 but the guy looked and then measured me. I asked him what it was. He said "You don't want to know." As it turns out I was 34, and some of that was due to increased exercise. But all my 31 inch stuff just had to go. I'd been idly wondering why I had to cram myself into it.😁

Let me start by saying that I really liked most of what you wore on this video. John…you’re getting rid of the yellow shirt!? Noooo! I think it looks fantastic on you. I also loved the blue gingham. It’s one of my favorites. Do you ever sell some of what you have previously worn?
To be honest, I have a difficult time going through my closet. I did it…once. I made a minuscule dent in my wardrobe; not nearly enough. If you were to grade me, I would have received a D-.

I recently donated a bunch of clothes and shoes. I'm gonna try to stick to just buy what I need instead of filling the entire closet. The yellow shirt looks pretty good by the way, wear it if you like it.

Already bought several new warm weather items. Trying to broaden my style a bit beyond the same things youve seen in fashion videos of the last few years. I feel I have a wardrobe that fits those videos already and its gotten a tad boring. Adding back in some shirts with imagery on it.
I got a summer button down with classic American tattoo images on it. I know, I know... but I think it actually looks fun and sexy tbh.
Also got two pairs of minimal sneakers (blue and black), and am tempted to finally see how I'd look in penny loafers. Thats one item ive shyed away from.
Oh and I got a black button down with pink inner lining around the collar that has tropical images peaking out. I don't usually like pink, but this really pops and looks nice.
You probably think I've gone crazy 😂. I swear i watch your fashion vids. 😂

I really enjoyed this video I thought it was fun. I’m lucky in that my 26 yr old son is the same size as me so I give him clothes that l no longer reach for. And they seem to appreciate it.

Recently I found that Jcrew pants fit me really well so I’ve up dated my wardrobe via Poshmark and he’s been getting all my H&M jeans and khakis
I never try things on during a purge. I'm just setting myself up for failure. That second shirt did fit you great though lol. Olivia will be expecting your call.

Overall you could improve your wardrobe by reducing those shirts to 25% and buying higher quality. It’s kind of a LOT of variety for varieties sake but most of very low quality materials, look and feel. To each there own but swapping out let’s say 5 express shirts for a few high quality oxfords would be a game changer.

I kind of liked that second shirt. Unfortunate about the fabric, because the pattern and fit was nice.
I need to do a spring cleaning of my closet as well. Have a bunch of things that have questionable patterns, are too big, or that just don’t get worn even though they’re perfectly decent pieces.
My bigger issue is shoes. Before covid, I was in the office 5 days a week, in suits or slacks/sport coat. Post-Covid world, that’s down to 1-2 days a week at most. I have a ton of Allen Edmonds dress shoes that just don’t get worn. Ugh. Hate to get rid of them because hey who knows maybe day I end up in an office all the time again? But they’re taking up a ton of closet real estate.
My wife just finished her closet clean out so she’s bugging me to get on with mine 😅

Yes, I did. But I also realize that I’ve had those items for several years, and think I’m pretty much done with them. Especially the ones with patterns. I’m kind of moving away from busy patterns these days.

I'm not going to lie, some of those floral pattern shirts look a lot like the wallpaper designs that were in parents house growing up. To be frank, I'd ditch a lot of those floral designed shirts and hold onto a couple of the stripped or plaid shirts. On a positive note, great idea about getting your spring purge/cleaning started. I will likely need to do the same very shortly.

No, not exactly. Yes, they do have a lot of pieces for the younger crowd, but they also have stuff that can work for older guys.
Dont know why people were hating on the yellow shirt...I liked it and the blue one too. I too myself have gotten away from pattern shirts and more into solid colours, more elegant to me. May be an age related thing....LOL

I like your new direction. The patterns gotta go. They might work better for a 21 year old. At my age I ask, "would Bond wear it".kinda silly but he stays to classic stuff that works mostly.

I think shirts with vertical lines don’t look the best on you. I think your torso does not accept vertical lines well. Solids and patterns look good on you
