What a year! NFS 3, Unreal, Baldur's Gate, Grim Fandango, Starcraft, Thief The Dark Project and Half Life. Holy cow, we were bombarded with masterpieces back in late 90s. I miss those days when games were a labor of love. By the way Thief: The Dark Project is a such a classic. One of the best PC games ever made.
I can't believe Unreal and Half-Life were released in the same year. And don't get me started on Starcraft. 1998 was a phenomenal year to be a PC gamer.
To be fair, Unreal was damn fine to look at but the gameplay fucking sucked. The combat was so ...... crap. Theres no other word for it. It just felt BAD. Very pretty though, especially on a fast PC with a VooDoo. But yeah, Starcraft.... jesus christ. What a fucking game.
zimThuet Yeah, it's saying that neither of them drew interest from the top 1% of gamers in FPS CPL, which of course gravitated towards Quake. Whats that? It still is true today? I wonder why...
zimThuet Quake is the closest we may ever come, juding by current standards and trends, to transcendance. You can compare quake with anything else. It is in it's own magical league.
@@TheVanillatech StarCraft Brood War is indeed one of the bests. Still looks good till this day, amazing graphic as for just 256 colours... But there is a one game missing - Oddworld Abe's Oddysee 👌
Commandos came out in 1998 as well! And I always thought Jedi Knight and Total Annihilation came out back then as well, but I checked it but these two came out late 1997. Well I played them in 1998 on my pentium 2 with 3dfx card that I bought myself in december 1997. Best purchase ever.
What the heck was that Tribes clip? That game, especially Tribes 2, had incredible and chaotic gameplay with spinfusor discs exploding everywhere, the CHING of a flag grab while like 50 people spammed WOOHOO and SHAZBOT in voice commands
I was about to get enraged that starcraft or baldur's gate wasn't first, but then half life appeared. Jeez. This year was good. Need for speed was amazing too. what a year 98 was
can anyone tell me please how i can get the full out of my windows 98 pc like whats the max of rams, hdd video card, sound card and internet thnx allot
Hiho dcoates14, sorry but i´m intressting that you go on your Owen think about the games ore on the Top Gaming List of the Jeahr ? Sorry for my Bad English, i´m from Germany, and i have dyslexia ;((
Dude my game is like a challenge i was looking it for almost 3 years i hope you can shine my path is a game like "commandos behind the enemy lines" but is gore is about mercenaries and always is on a scenary on water...

Half-Life actually became more popular later on with steam. At the time Unreal and Starcraft really were the breakthrough titles. Not bringing half life down, it would still definitely be top 10, but starcraft and unreal would be ahead of it.
I wouldn't have picked Tribes and I wouldn't have picked shogo. Starcraft was so good it single handedly killed the RTS genre; before it, there were many RTSs, after it, there were a few attempts to clone Starcraft and there were a few major series like red alert that hung around for a while, but they died pretty soon. That would have to be on the list somewhere. Fallout 2 was excellent. I'd put it second to Half-life. Unreal always felt a bit soulless and boring to me. I'd rather have Caesar III in it's place.
half life is also unplayable, half life is a run jump correctly or die game, how can you do run- squat-jump-squat in 0.2 sec, and i think it didnt have the map to know where you are. i couldnt play more than a half of 1st chapter.
It is your subjective opinion. In 98 you have Starcraft, Fallout 2, Half Life, Grim Fandago, Carmagedon, Battlezone, NFS III, Unreal, Age of Empires, Forsaken, FIFA, Railroad Tycoon, I would say they are much better games than Thief, since they gain and RETAIN more popularity than your favourite game of all times...
We are all expressing our opinions. In your opinion these games are better than Thief. There is no right or wrong answer. Why do I rate Thief so highly? It was one of the first stealth games created. It came out at a time when the games market was littered with first person shooters. The developers tried to do something different with Thief. If you try to play the game like a first person shooter you will die quickly. You need to keep out of sight from the enemy, stay in the shadows, keep quiet and plan your approach carefully. Going through the front door is rarely a good idea. You need to look for a back entrance. The atmosphere in the game is amazing. It gets very tense when a guard walks close by you and you're hoping he won't spot you. It was a very good year for games. I didn't choose the games for my list based on popularity. I chose them because they were my favourite.
Where is Missionforce Cyberstorm or Sevenance Blade of Darkenss still best fight system on PC. Half-Life, Thief, Starcraft, Baldur's Gate... I agree :)
I found Unreal very scary! Atmospheric! Still gives me the creeps now.
There was a time when video games where special. I don't know what's changed but after 2004 they lost that special feel.

The golden age of gaming. Starcraft, Half-Life, Thief, Unreal, Baldur's Gate, Fallout and many more. Unbelievable.

Half-Life does deserve No.1 spot.
and your life doesnt deserve to be here
Half-Life actually became more popular later on with steam. At the time Unreal and Starcraft really were the breakthrough titles. Not bringing half life down, it would still definitely be top 10, but starcraft and unreal would be ahead of it.

I wouldn't have picked Tribes and I wouldn't have picked shogo.

Fallout 2 was excellent. I'd put it second to Half-life.

Were Is metal gear?
No 1; baldur's gate IMO
If that is top 10 pc games from 1998 so i am a santa claus -.-
Heroes? Counter?
Not bad
REDGUARD!
The games are ok...but why you always put shooters at top 1?
I'm a huge RTS fan, but even I'll admit Half-life is the best game that came out in 1998
It's because first person shooters are my favourite game genre. What would your top 1 be for this year?
@@dcoates14 top 1 is hard, but I personally would also include anno 1602, commandos, redline racer, carmageddon 2

*facepalm* no fallout 2
Starcraft is one of the best games of all time.
I didn't even heard of Thief The Dark Project, I think it should not be in No.2 spot.
I agree. I really wanted to put Thief in the No 1 spot but a certain FPS game was also released this year.

I really disagree with this list... RE2, tomb raider 3, gex, Oddworld, fallout 2 and metal gear are better than half of the games on this list.
Where is Missionforce Cyberstorm or Sevenance Blade of Darkenss still best fight system on PC. And no Earthsiege 2
