So proud to see Jewels has traveled to all major ballet cities under the supervision of the Balanchine Trust. How many times I have seen Jewels in Lincoln Center in NY. It is truly a timeless masterpiece, as new and innovative now as it was in 1969 when it was created.
I am so in love with Theme and Variations that I used to be disappointed by this Polonaise. Now I realize that the music is so different that it requires different choreography, less flashy and more subtle, and I love it. And what a brilliant performance!
BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO
Lovely Tchaikovski, great dancers. I love these no story ballets where everybody gets to dance. Beautiful choreography. Also Like G.Bizet Symphony in C, 4 parts. Also very joyfull, lovely music. Also On YT, from several theatres. I love the Bolshoi with Svetlana Zhakarova AND other top Russian stars. Also all in white.
I like the way they dance it large-scale, clean, so the geometry is legible. The fugue is very exciting. the glee is in the dancing itself -- the way they step out, large, clean, sharp, with surprising variants on the polonaise step, and they do these so clearly you can see the wit.... The ballerina -- looks like Aurelie Dupont -- pulls the whole spectacle together beautifully.
I strongly disagree with NYCB purists who feel that only NYCB can stage a production of Balanchine's works worth seeing. I know lots of ballet fans who say the finest production of Concerto Baracco they've ever seen was done not by NYCB but by Dance Theater of Harlem. And why would that be so hard to believe? Great works of art are by definition open to different interpretations by skilled artists everywhere. It's kinda like saying that only those who worked directly with Shakespeare can know how to interpret his works.
The negative commentary is depressing. This segment brings me more joy than most ballet I've seen, and I'm grateful for the poster and all the dancers. Look for the joy in life!
I saw Jewels when Mr. B was running the company. For those of you who are not familiar with his teaching he had Muses and no Stars. At the moment there are a lot of good dancers in the company but no individuals. When I used to go to NYC Ballet 3 times a week it was with the anticipation of seeing one of my favorite dancers. I do that Now with the Royal Ballet and sometimes with ABT. Always with the Kirov.
Every bad comment has any importance for anybody. I just can say one thing, do it! Ppl who is writting tht kind of comments, has no idea of Balanchine´s ballet, really think before to make a comment.
Last July, 2017 Lincoln Center Festival celebrated the 50th anniversary of G. Balanchine`s Jewels with tree of world`s foremost ballet companies dancing all 3 ballets some evening, on some stage for a first time in history of ballet. From Paris was POB, from Moscow was Bolshoi and from New York Balanschine company NYCB. Was unique chance to compare 3 major ballet companies dancing Balanchine`s Jewels...and was not great. That was not Balanchine !!!
I think they are missing what the teachers, who had worked with balanchine when they where young, can give to the dancers in the nycb but they are in paris and not in nyc. It was beautiful tho
Many of the dancers who worked directly with Balanchine are working for the Balanchine Trust, which sends them out to different ballet companies often in Europe, to coach the dancers and make sure the Balanchine style and substance are kept pristine, as they were when Balanchine was alive.
Even though Balanchine's ballets are staged by people who work for the Balanchine Trust, this work can still look quite different on different companies. POB's version of Diamonds is one of the best performances recorded of all the world-class companies who perform it. I prefer their performance - and costumes - of this piece to that of NYCB. I also feel that Dance Theatre of Harlem danced Concerto Barocco better than NYCB. To those people who worship NYCB - The Church of Balanchine - this is sacrilege. But it's actually a testament to the quality of the choreography that it can shine brilliantly even when performed by a company that is wasn't created for.
Thank you Brian, they are like wooden soldiers, no connection between the prima ballerina and her partner, if you can watch Obraztsova dance it with the Bolshoi. Perfection. The NYC Ballet is not good.
"We hate/dislike/disrespect ect NYCB. Seems to be a growing theme in some circles... Again if you dislike Balanchine enough to dislike his ballets being danced the way he specifically wanted them danced why find videos featuring his choreography to watch them?
***** .....Everything you have ever written on yt concerning Balanchine says that you have no liking for his ballets and no regard for him as an artist in any way or any idea of his importance in ballet history. And you have shown nothing but utter and completely dislike, disrespect and disdain for NYCB, it dancers and its school in ANY era.... how can you possibly dispute this?
@88888Di88888 "Diamonds" is not about Russian technique, it's Balanchine technique through and through. And really, @nahid, NYCB is no good at dancing Balanchine? You should watch Suzanne Farrell in the pas de deux; you might learn something about what the ballet (and Balanchine) is really about.
Aishukhuspe Would you be able to do as good? And it is Paris Opera Ballet we talked about. I understand you might not like such and such dancers because of your taste but saying they werent good is very harsh!
@@eve-laureroux9523 yes, i agree with you, Eve-Laure, that comments about such great dancers not being good Is harsh or ignorant. They bring So much beauty, joy to this world with their art that nourishes our souls!
Yes, Michael Dabney, this ballet AND so many others bring a lot of joy, nourishment for our souls. I Also love G.Bizet Symphony in C, lovely music, another no story ballet, different theatres on YT have it, 4 parts. The Bolshoi Is lovely, with Svetlana Zhakarova AND other top Russian stars.

I never get tired of "Jewels." I never will.

Precision, French style and rehearsed
with the Balanchine trust.
Ballanchine: "See the music, hear the dance." So evident here with Tchaikovsky's 3rd. Brilliant.
Balanchine was sheer genius, his ballets cannot be matched in excitement, beauty and of course the dancing must be pristine, love it love it
шикарно. очень нравится геометрия перестроений. просто блеск❤
Best Diamonds ever!!!
these are probably my favorite costumes from all the diamonds on youtube
Yes very beautiful costumes.
They dance with such joy. It took me a while to appreciate Diamonds--now I love it.

Balanchine was giving tribute to the Russian style ballet precise, and gorgeous to behold

Precisión armonia disciplina son los parámetros para lograr un gran ballet. Hermoso y delicado.
Beautiful design with a light touch. So many companies, including our own Royal Ballet, get it wrong.

It's Agnes Letestu ..she's so glamorous in the pas de deux , her epaulment is wonderful ‼️

the core was really good!

Yes, these ballets bring so much joy, uplifting, Fill the soul with beauty!
Must be a rather joyless person!
I love the ballet , I dance myself

I want to write Music like this!
With a grasp of three as clear as Tchaikovsky!

And who are the principal dancers?
Eccellente!
No it's not Aurélie Dupont but Agnès Letestu, another brilliant étoile!
Agnes Letestu with Jean Guillame Bart
This video insert is POB DVD live recording 2005. Definitely one of the best interpretation of Balanchine`s Jewels, all 3 ballets by any standard.
As you well know, the Paris Opera dancers are the best in the world. They can do everything to the perfection, classic and modern.

Wow that's the first time I've ever seen anyone say that New York City Ballet couldn't dance Balanchine!!! :-\
You mean Emeralds are French , Rubies was America because of the Speed but I saw it dance better by Diana Vishnieva and other Kirov dancers.

Lacks style and feeling...they make it look like an army manoeuvre. Not what Mr Balanchine had in mind I'm afraid
The principal dancers werent good :/
