Renault Clio 1.2 Airbag And Service Light On [Causes And Fixes]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 сер 2018
- Our Renault Clio 1.2 has the common airbag-service light issue and although there are a few videos on UA-cam showing different causes and fixes, none of them show the other possible problems so in this video we look at how to check what issue you may have.

A brilliant video.
After spending hundreds of pounds on airbag modules, I watched your video and sorted the Airbag light in 30 mins.
Thank you.
Fantastic!
@@retrorestore It is amazing what electrical contact cleaner can do !
Thanks again for all you good works.
Another common airbag and serv fault rarely discussed on UA-cam is the rotational connector behind the steering wheel for the driver air bag. It's also called a squib or clockspring. It wears out and one wire breaks giving an 'open circuit' fault. Its a cheap replacement too from an ebay secondhand dealer.
Thanks I've subscribed straight away i just bought a clio 1 5dci got that fault air bag and service will check thanks your amazing 10/10 ,Neil
It pays to get the right equipment . As you were saying its pure guess work. Great advice and look forward to part 2
Am surprised you don't have more subscribers as all your videos are very detailed unlike some youtubers who edit out the important bits.
Great video! I love the way you explained those sensors under the seat, this is a problem I need to fix on my Clio.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for making this video. First time I've had this light off in 11 years of owning a clio. Replaced the crash sensor.
Thanks to your video, my daughters clio has passed its mot, no warning lights no problems cheers mate!
This video has been a god send, thank you so much for posting it.
You're very welcome
I am impressed with the clarity of the explanation. I tried the binnacle connection first-no joy. But wiggling the grey connector under the seat sorted the warning lamps. That saved going to the next step of buying a side impact sensor. Thanks!
Nice one, well done
Had the same problem on my nissan kubistar service light and airbag just checked the connection under driver seat as soon as I gave it a good squeeze the lights went straight out. Cheers for the great video very helpful🙂
Well done Martin keep up the great work
another great video martin keep them coming
Great summary of the different fixes, cheers mate hoping this helps with my kangoo!
Glad it helped
This did the trick for me. Thanks mate!
Thanks old son, gotta kangoo some garage tried to blag me for full replacement coming up mot, seen your vid am impressed and very pleased you saved me at least 500qd,thank you very much
Glad I could help
Good video this thanks pal. Answered a lot of questions for me when my airbag & service lights came on recently.
Glad it helped
The cable behind the wheel was loose and your tips fixed my problem, thank you very much sir!
Well done bud.
Well done matey. You've just saved me heaps on expensive parts. Your video really helped me out and sorted out the problem. Nice one matey :)
Well done bud. Goo savings too I bet
@@retrorestore Yep. Sure was. I went through everything and it did turn out to be the connection under the seat and all I had to do was spray a bit of WD40 and lights went straight out when I reconnected the two terminals. What I liked about your video was that you showed everything that could cause the problem so all I needed to do was go through them one at a time until the lights went out. Mate you saved me a lot of time and money... Many thanks.. :)
Thanks for the vid Martin.
french electrics im help my brother with his 307 is annoying to be at best i use elimination like you and the reader ebay or breakers is great value great video again martin m8
Hi Martin had the same on my 2003 Clio, tried them checks but mate had one of those testers, yup passenger side censor went down the scrappy got it for £10 all sorted that was 3 years ago love your Vids PS got a 54 plate 2005 love these little cars. Your tutorials are priceless thanks.
Thanks for sharing
Good video well done, for a diy'r with limited tools and equipment that was good
Nice one.. some good fault finding there. Those sensors are a pain, especially front and rear ones that live outside the car.
Just an update lad, new to this driving and car fixing. A wiggle of the clips Under the front passenger seat sorted my issue many thanks
Glad it helped
Just wanted say thanks. Turns out it I had to do with just disconnect and clean the connector and problem fixed. Thanks
Thanks for this video. I had the same problem and tried the first option. Wriggled the connector underneath the passenger seat and gave it a little tap and it solved the problem. Both Service lights and Airbag lights have cleared.
Thanks
Excellent!
Enjoyed this. Here I am with 9500 quid worth of diagnostic tools and you speak of that little launch uni as the proper stuff. ha ha well it solved your issue and to be honest, it looks alright.
Thanks for the educational video.
Im a mobile mechanic, auto electrician, auto locksmith.
Excellent diagnosis.
Brilliant, the under the seat method worked for me, cheers mate
No problem 👍
Thank you very much for sharing!
Great video mate you can also use a resistor in the place of the senses to see which one has gone
Yes Leon but I didn't have any to hand.
Nice bit of diagnostic kit that. Worth the cost if you have different types of cars on the drive too 👍
Very useful video thanks!
Big help this: thanks. My daughter’s Clio had the same dash error lights. I’d narrowed it down to the connectors under the seat, but didn’t know about the dash binnacle or the pre-tensioners. Disconnected battery, waited for a couple of hours and liberally sprayed SWITCH cleaner, not WD40, and fired her up. All sorted 😎👍
Nice one bud. Well done.
Fixed my airbag issue. Nice one
Hi Martin, you've made my evening! My son has this car (06 model) and we've done exactly the same as you and wiggled the grey connector etc to no effect. We hadn't heard of the connector you found (that was faulty) so that has to be it! And yes that has to be worth 15 notes on eBay. Cheers buddy! If that works we will be over the moon as otherwise it's his ideal first car.
Quite agree with other comments on here regarding French car electronics - I had a C4GP and all the warning lights came on one day even though the car was still driveable. It turned out that the front screen rain ducts (tubes carrying rainwater away from the windscreen and supposedly dumping the water on the road) actually had caps on the end that presumably were designed to open when water built up behind them - wtf?????? Over time the crud from the road meant that the end caps collected a sufficient amount of dirt to stop them opening - with the result that they did fail to open and the water built up behind them and eventually overflowed into the engine bay causing electrical mayhem! Thankfully it all dried out and we were lucky. I did however take those end caps off (right underneath the engine, 2 of them) and loads of foul water poured out - French overthinking there... why put a cap on a tube that has to get rid of the water?
Anyway, sorry for the long comment, but thanks again as I'm sure your diagnosis could be the problem for our Clio. Cheers! Mike from Sandhurst.
I hope so Mike, A diagnostic code reader would point you to it as well but good luck with it bud.
Cheers
Martin
Good info Martin.
thank you for the replies...
Gonna get one of them cpr thins as well, dint need one this time your vid was good enough but it sounds good for the rest of the wiring should I get future probs🎉
Very informative.
great vid Martin had the same issue's with a clio and a megane I had many years ago ,put me off french cars lol. atb Steve
The same issues with the airbag lights and plugs etc are common on most cars not just Renaults.
Good video Martin. I wonder how much Renault would’ve charged to fix that job. A few hundred quid I reckon.
Thanks a bunch. Fixed mine by wigeling that connector at the back of steering wheel.
Excellent!
Nice video friend, thanks
Very good teacher. Thanks.
You are welcome!
AMAZING fix. 30 quid on ebay now. was i lucky picking the left side, is there also the same part on the right side
Life saver🤝
Wiggle it worked. Brilliant
Top man👍
Helped me out thanks a lot !!
Glad it helped!
Great video. Very clearly presented and good fault finding.
Is the Clio 3 2008 prone to similar issues?
Not sure bud.
My clio is 16 years old, leaking sunroof, airbag light on, heater motor blew, fan belt went, drivers door doesn't close right. I have no fixed all these things myself in my driveway with no experience working on cars at all.. threw in an oil change and 2 droplinks.. flew threw mot. Happy as Larry.
Yep daughters Mk3 is 13 yrs old. It's a lovely car to drive. It has its niggles and the worst thing was it melted out a relay for the headlights. But it was no great job to fix. The engines is fantastic though - registered an emission level only at the 3rd decimal place on the last MOT
The old intro back on your video 😁👍
Great vid Martin 👍 good diagnostics.A handy tool for airbag diagnostics is a srs emulator it basically emulates airbag resistance idle for testing airbags, pretensioners, clock springs
Nice one Jamie.
Superb
great video martin . that car again! lol
Excellent video!BTW I would like to ask you something.
A friend of mines owns a 2002 year model. He has the same problem.A few years ago he went to a Renault dealership and they cut-and then resoldered-the wires under the passenger seat but still no luck.Service and airbag lights are still on.About a week ago he took it to another Renault dealership and they told him that all 4 airbags have a problem and they need to be replaced. Is it possible?I highly doubt it because it's a little bit weird to have 4 faulty airbags at the same time .Is there any chance that the lights are on because of a blown fuse(airbag fuse)? He hasn't inspected the fuse yet. Also, the task you do at 2:35,is it safe to do it like you do or is it better to remove the negative cable from the battery(you didn't remove it because I can see the immobilizer light flashing)? Finally, considering that the "trick" with the passenger seat sensor didn't work out,if we check out the fuse and it's not blown and we push the cable like you did at 2:35 but the problem still exists, will a new squib resolve the problem once for all?Sorry for my long message!!!
I used 2 resistors (3,9 Ohm, 5 W) to short-circuit the Yellow plug behind the wheel. It worked 🤟
Nice work!
How to do this please ??
Thanks mate, I bought one of them kits. Quite expensive but found out I got fault DF241 - Passenger's seat base/lap belt circuit. I will take a look under the seat tomorrow and see if I find any loose wires. :) I guess the kit can be used in the future haha
Nice one!
999thenewman, I agree. I would never buy a French car, I'm a Vauxhall man myself. Great vid as per usual Martin, handy to know all these diagnostic issues 👍
James Thorley Haha, Vauxhalls now technically French
@@priteshchampaneri4706 😂
Wish you could of given the part number, great video btw
The CRP129 is OK to read basic codes and can be picked up for less than a hundred quid. For best value in their range I would opt for the CRP touch pro. Full android touch screen op system and has .. almost .. dealer level diagnostics on most cars. Can be bought for a tad under 300 quid but worth every penny. Quick note about sensors .. buy the best you can afford, OEM if possible. You can get burned with cheap aftermarket stuff and end up loading up the parts cannon unnecessarily.
Shared Martin 😎😎😎
What fault code do you get from the under passenger seat connector problem? I got DF075 (Passenger Front Air Bag Curcuit 1, open circuit) along with airbag warning light on ..
I would get another one for sure. But I would also take that "defective" one apart to see what makes it tick.
Thanks to tou I solved my driver airbag issue !! Fu***ng connector behind the steering wheel …
Great video, will cheaper diagnostic tools still read the fault codes for airbags?
Generally no but they all differ
How much was that obd scanner Martin? & does it work on all makes? Another great video. Thanks 👍
Its pretty dear at around £200 but I was sent it to review it but not had the time yet.
Good job. Not sure if you guys can get a diagnostic device called BluDriver. It's a scanner where you plug in a small block to the engine light port under the dash board. You then sync it to your mobile phone using a Bluetooth connection and read the codes on your phone. The software is free to download to your phone off the 'net. It works great and you can read and/or clear the codes right on the phone. It's pretty slick! The whole thing cost me $100 USD.
Not heard of that one Jack, good info though.
You can get them from aliexpress now for under $1. (Elm327 copy)
awesome video!! Where your accent from, mate?
SW London.
you should swap that sensor with the drivers one and make sure the fault changes to drivers just to be sure
No need, the tester confirmed that sensor.
Thank u so. much sir abs light off now
Martin, Great fault finding a 15 pound fix i wonder what this would cost with a renault dealer lol, Cheers Dave.
I hate to think Dave, All main dealers you can say goodbye to £100 per hour.
I had similar success diagnosing a miss fire on a Alfa 156 using a Bluetooth obd II reader and an app on my Android tablet and I ain't no car mechanic. The diagnostics plus the coil pack cost about twenty quid from ebay. 😀
That was a one off for me though as I don't usually do this sort of stuff. It might be worth the investment for Martin's diagnostics reader if you do this thing a lot.
I'm not up on modern cars computer systems but you are right Steve, you need a diagnostic tool to read the codes instead of just changing out parts as a lot of people do.
I had Renault once, would cry myself to sleep at night.Replaced a sensor every other week then came to my senses.
Funny we have used Renault Kangoo and Clio vans for years with NO problems with them. I have a 2008 Kangoo Expression DCi car version last of the first generation and never had any problem with that either apart from the airbag light which I know to be the plug under the drivers seat as all I do is press it back together and the light goes out until the next pothole knocks it back on. In the three years I have had this Kangoo it has sailed through the MOT every time only needing a number plate bulb in one MOT and a headlight bulb in the MOT it has just gone through.
I heard a Kangoo had passed an mot but thought it was a legend or myth.
poor william woods is trigged because of a car brand thats not very good the last good renault was the 5 and the 21 the rest is utter shite
My Volvo s40 has the Renault Diesel engine it was brilliant 250 thousand miles on it and still loads more to give. :). The Renault dci is a class engine.
I have had two both shit you would think I would learn the first time
Great work. That would have cost 100s for a garage to sort. Prob have young lad on it just replacing everything.
Exactly Dave
yes same problem with mine renault, just reached 61k mileage
Brightly clear i will investigate seams to be the tensioner open circuit for me
@retrorestore - have you ever seen a 'no computer' - 'computer voltage too high' fault on that reader? I have an icarsoft rtv1.0 which im using on my 2000 megane
Not seen that James.
I love your channel my Clio 2003 1.2 has the service light on but not airbag light 🙄
You can pickup a cheap obdII tester to read the fault code and take it from there Esme.
Thank you 😊
Very nicely presented, however i am more interested in the trotter van project. What’s happening to it?
I keep getting disturbed with these jobs lol
Hi! My Clio 2 had the same problem of the 2 warning lights, service and airbag then they turned off all alone.
Yesterday I was parking my car and I heared a clack noise coming from the steering wheel, like something inside the steering cover was making contact.
This morning went up the 2 lights again.
It must be that contact you showed! I have to check it!
Thank you!
I checked it and it was probably that connector not properly on its place. After pushing any connector back, the noise during the turning of the steering wheel came off and the 2 lights went off as well.
I was very worried my steering was broken in a badly way.
Fortunately it was just a cable interference. Thank again! Cheers
Shocking electrics on Renaults probably the worst out there 🙄, no pun intended 🙃
Absolute DRIVEL! The problems this Clio is having is EXACTLY the same problems most cars have with the airbag lights/plugs - not just a Renault problem. This is a FOURTEEN year old car and for that age of car it has done excellent to have needed so little to get it through the MOT. As I have commented above Renaults are the most reliable of the European manufacturers plus they do not sell more vans in Europe than anyone else for nothing - if they were unreliable or crap that wouldnt be the case. We have used Renault Kangoo and Clio vans for a long time now and they are very reliable. I also own a 2008 Renault Kangoo Expression car and that is very reliable as well and all it has needed to pass the last couple of MOTs is a bulb each time. I'll take my Kangoo over what ever you have anytime even if it is a Ferrari.
@@williamwoods8022 Are you triggered
@@williamwoods8022 time of the month is it? 🤣
I think the sensor is an inertia sensor. It detects side impact I believe. Great video Martin that Launch looks like a great tool how affordable is it?
around £200 Steve, there are cheaper options out there.
retrorestore Cheers Martin I do have a cheap one but this looks really good and Launch is a known make in diagnostic tools I think they are pretty good as far as I know. Cheers. Steve
Nice Mart.
Baz.
Cheers Baz
The Peugeot 306s have problems with the door looms, its a design flaw in the loom. The loom physically snaps where the loom comes out of the bulk head to the plug into the door. It was more common on the old mk1 306s and I think mk2 306s, All you have to do is extend the wires, and replace blown fuses. Just another heads up if anyone has problems with door electrics,
Nice one bud. Cheers
Martin
I had a 306, a good test to see if the door loom could be the problem is to check the door speaker is working when the car/ignition is on and the door is open
I had a 2002 Renault Clio, the airbag light would come on first thing in the morning and would go away after a while. The code was something like 'power supply voltage low' turns out it was the battery and alternator causing the fault believe it or not
Hi Martin ' great video, can you tell me how much that code reader was please, thanks
Its pretty dear at around £200 but I was sent it to review it but not had the time yet.
wow that's lucky wish someone would send me one :) I'll look out for the review
@@canalboating if you have an Android tablet you can buy a cheap bluetooth reader and try using that. There are plenty of apps for it. The one I used was called torque (I think).
hey. i have the same problem. Do I need a diagnostic tool to let the light go out after the bug is fixed or does the Airbag light reset automatically? thank you good video.
It should go out when you replace the sensor bud
Great video. BUT you forgot to mention the part name and part code. I can't find it eBay.
Just type in "Clio MK2 Airbag Impact Sensor"
martin could you please tell me, where you got your scanner from, and what price, i did see something saying 129? ,also what do you think of it, give us another video using it....have a good day
I will do a video on it, To be honest, I was sent it to review it but that was months ago and not had the time but I will do it soon.
I'll look forward to that review too, hope Isuzu is found within it's menu.
That's the Launch CRP 129 it's one of their entry level handheld diagnostics tools, their not that expensive but their good value for the price, It's also worth checking out the Autel MD802 if your interested in buying a scanner (around £200)
👍
What diagnostic device did you use? I've used two different OBD diagnostic readers now and neither will read the fault.
I think it was my Launch CRP123X
Did you know if this came up with a 180 code? Mines say passenger seatbelt pre tensioner and passenger side crash sensor
Then you have two faults to fix or bypass.
Serious question was the lights on when whent through mot as wouldn't it fail if airbag light on
No bud
hi sir i have clio 1.2L has service light and air bag light on ,but couldn't fix any mechanic ,i tried to put bypass but still on , my question is ,passenger and driver side impact/crash sensor r both same part code numer or different , i havnot change passenger side sensor which u tell us in vedeo but looks like it already changed,
I don't know if they are the same but I would suggest you plug in a scanner and it will tell you what sensor needs changing.
my clio has an airbag fault. I hear door clicking noises and door unlocks itself when im driving and airbag light comes on. If i pull a thick bunch of wires wrapped in a coil under my drivers seat the light goes out. any ideas whats wrong. its a mark 3 1.2 16v clio. garage had a look and it says intermittent fault on computer.
Sounds like a poor connection under the seat bud. get some contact cleaner spray and unplug them and clean them.
Hi martin, i have the same problem with my renault clio, could you comment the item number for that sensor please :)
Yes eBay item number:223008947013
We're did you get your senor from 👍
Haven't got it yet.
Slightly off topic -
But....is the bite point really high on Renaults, specifically MK3 Clio??
It shouldn't be.
If I cut out all the connectors and solder them, would i also need to delete the fault code to make the light finally go out?
i think the light went out on its own
@@retrorestore thank you. then my problem must be somewhere else. maybe also the sensor.
