Renault Clio Airbag Light Fix

  • I have fixed the airbag light on renault clios a number of times, and have found the two main reasons to be either the pretensioner plug under the passenger seat to be loose, or else the airbag ecu gets covered in whatever drink is sitting in the cupholder which in a clio is in a great place right above the airbag ecu.
    There is many other reasons why the airbag light might come on, i have only looked at two.

    Thanks so much, spent over £100 at garages and have got nowhere with it. 10 mins and it's done for free!

    You are worth your weight in gold. My Kangoo had this fault, which was the only reason it failed the MOT. I took it to a local garage who told me that a fault on the vans engine management system meant their diagnostic equipment would not talk to the vehicles system which meant my next step was the dealers & a whole bunch of money & stress. So I decided to check out Y.T. & found your video, as soon as I wiggled the connection you indicate the fault disappeared. I can't thank you enough. :)

    Thanks a mil for this helpful video.
    My lights came on about 3 weeks ago and have been doing their on/off thing ever since.
    My 2006 Mk2 Clio was having its 2 yearly Irish NCT test on Friday and the guy failed it on this point. I asked him why he failed it when there was no passenger seat airbag fitted. He couldn't answer.
    Of course he couldn't, he wasn't a mechanic, just a poxy test jockey. Being a mechanic of 25 years I gave a good account of myself before leaving the centre.
    On Saturday morning I reached under the passenger seat and jiggled the loom. Bingo, the lights haven't surfaced since.
    I returned today (Monday) and had my visual retest done in 2 minutes, got my cert and if the lights come back on they can fuck themselves for another 2 years.
    Once again, many thanks.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  9 років тому

      Great to hear you got through the test, i did not know the NCT was every other year. As for the light coming on even if there is no airbag mounted in the passenger seat, the pretensioner for the passenger seatbelt is found on all models of clio and the wires can get loose for it, they all run through the same system as the airbags with the pretensioners detonating around the same time.

    • @theedscape8002
      @theedscape8002 9 років тому

      Yeah the NCT is every 2 years from 4 years old to 10 years old. Then it's every year.

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV i replaced my drivers window regulator because old one snapped. It now works but now the passenger window has stopped working. There is no relay clicking too. But drivers window still works i tried passenger side switch snd still no working.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  5 років тому

      @@Mixbag
      Has it stopped as a direct result of the work done on the driver's side, or phrased another way has the fault with the passenger side window only presented itself following the completion of the work on the driver's side door?
      I have a separate video on the Clio electric windows have a look through the Clio playlist on this channel. Although its possible that something may have been disturbed on the connector to stop the passenger side window from working. As the other video will show providing power directly to the motor can be used to identify if the motor is faulty, or if it's the wiring going to the motor.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  11 років тому

    Your welcome glad to be of help.
    As for the lights, do you mean the reverse light wont come on or all the rear lights?
    Things to check are; bulbs, fuses, connectors and earthing points associated with the rear lights.
    But the reverse switch is located on the gearbox, i cant remember 100% but its on the bellhousing somewhere, under the air filter box on the 16v engine.
    Im not sure right now, if you cant find it let me know ill look at my car, or a manual and see what it says.

      It was only an old car that was going to be scrapped anyhow. Quite an old video i would not record a dirty car again like in these early videos as they got too many negative comments assuming i was the one who caused it to be that way.

  • @Sandeep2463
    @Sandeep2463 3 роки тому +1

    Hi, Thankyou for the video. My renault clio had the same problem. The car was rejected in the vehicle inspection due to it. Basically it was due to the loose wires under the driver seat so when I pushed the wire inside that white plastic socket, the air bag light went off. Do you know if this is enough to pass the inspection or the symbol needs to be removed by the machine which is used to check the electrical system (the ones which they use in inspection centers) of the car?

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  11 років тому

    Other than the airbag ecu the only other electrical thing in that region is the obd socket (found by lifing out the ash tray).
    The immobiliser reciever is around the key barrel, what condition is the key itself in?

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  12 років тому +1

    The airbag light comes on for a variety of reasons and in the video i only look at one reason, although i find it to be the most common reason.
    The grey and black plugs are separate, grey is for the seatbelt pretensioner, black is for the seat airbag
    in the video i cut the wires going into the grey plug on the passenger seat and soldered each pair of wires together @1:16 you can see me cutting the wires; the pink wire is connected to the brown. and the orange wire is connected to the blue.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  11 років тому

    I agree, i initially fixed my 406's airbag light using scott locks and they are terrible, 3 months later they failed bringing the airbag light back on, and i had also used them for parking sensors and the metal connector inside them actually rusted. Solder with heat shrink tubing is the most reliable way to join wires.

  • @alexjb1989

    Thank you for the reply. Is this something that I should just replace myself (is it easy) or does it make more sense to take it to a garage with a CLIP machine first?
    Thanks again

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  11 років тому

    The time my ecu was faulty it came up as a fault code no communication with the airbag ecu or something to that effect.
    I picked up a replacement ecu in the scrapyard for £10 but the car was there because the engine had blown it wasnt involved in a crash.
    What sort of diagnostics machine was used, was it a renault clip one or universal one?
    Can you lift up the cup holder to see if there is any moisture in there, the previous owner may have dropped a drink?

    That sounds like the steering wheel airbag, on the clio the airbag and igniter are one unit, the steering wheel centre comes out and that part is what should be replaced.
    Has the car been bumped into anything to trigger the airbag?

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 років тому

    When you say meter states do you mean diagnostics machine?
    If it has specified the passenger seat then its most likely the black plug as i have shown in this video, cut one pair of wires and solder one pair at a time so they dont get mixed around

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 років тому

    Is there a difference in the two wheels?
    You would need to check if the connections on the back are the same, but even then I'm not sure if the airbag modules are the same or if they are compatible with each other since I've never been in one of the larger engined clios.
    Its best to check renault forums first to see if this can be done

    Thanks that would be the clock spring you are describing.
    I did have that problem once on the 406 when i bought a used indicator stalk (ie com2000), on it the indicator stalk, wiper stalk and the clock spring are all one part.
    They can also break when the car has had the steering rack disconnected if the joint isnt put back on straight the wheel can be slightly off to one side so turning it on full lock can snap the clock spring.

    great video , i would just like to add ,if your clio has the service and airbag light on ,as well as the indicators stopped cancelling and you notice a bit of a clik coming from the steering wheel column when you turn the wheel ,your problems could be the airbag thingy in the centre of the stalk column has broken and needs replacing

    Hi Peugeot. Thanks for the video. My car has got airbag light on constantly and failed MOT test recently. In my case, my car is a bit diff. to your demonstration one. It has the seat airbag, that means the red plug has its own use. That leads me to two questions: (1) Not sure which plug (red for seat airbag, and grey for seatbelt pretensioner) has caused the light on. (2) In your case, you cut and soldered the parallel wires. But does it mean the pretensioner would fail in case of car crash?

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 років тому

    By the way you described it your car has a few plugs under the seat, do you have side airbags in the seat?
    If the plugs are loose (you cant tell exactly what one without a diagnostics machine) then cut one pair of wires that are parallel to eachother in the plug ie the one going in and one going out, do one pair at a time for the affected plug.

    Is there a chance that this could be caused by blown airbag fuse?I mean the service and airbag lights.Because we tried the trick with the plug under the passenger seat(in fact an electrician at a Renault dealership did it)but the lights didn't go off.At another Renault dealership told us that all 4 airbags are failed and should be replaced whilst at a couple of garages told us that the clockspring(behind the steering wheel)is worn out and we need to replace it.

    Hello,
    I've got a Clio DCi 51 plate. Airbag and serv light on. Had my MOT today and they plugged it into a diagnostic tool (charged me £48 for that alone) and told me that there's a fault with both driver and passenger side airbags, but they said this was likely due to a faulty ECU. I'm guessing I may have a similar problem to what you've got in the second half of your video, but I've never split any drinks down there. Any suggestions before I start ripping the console off?

    Thanks for the reply. That's very kind of you. But still, not quite sure about the plug. I appreciate the fact that the plug could go faulty and stop the wires from connecting right. But if cutting & reconnenting the parallel wires could also do the same job when crash happens, then there's no point of deploying the plug in the first place.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV

    The impact sensor on the car, have you changed it?
    There would be a front impact sensor somewhere in the front bumper and one in the B pillar near where the seatbelt reel is
    If they haven't been replaced then they are still sending crash data to the ecu, a diagnostics machine will say exactly what sensor is detecting an impact

    The impact sensors once they sense an impact they need to be changed, my cousin tried to get second hand sensors from the scrap yard but none worked new ones for the dealer were the only solution unfortunately.
    Did you replace the ecu with a new or used one, its possible the donor car has crash data in it, but you can send the ecu away to have its crash data erased some companies do that service, although if you can find one in a scrapyard car that hasnt been hit its usually cheaper.

    hi
    one plug is for the seatbelt pretensioner (grey) and one is for the airbag (black), on the more basic clios they only have pretensioners.
    Are you talking about the connector which appears at 1:02?
    Any chance you could get the car plugged into a diagnostics machine to see what fault code it brings up?
    Or alternativley send me a private message and a picture of the wiring under the seat so that i can see whats going on.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 років тому

    The purpose of the plug is to connect the wires for the pretensioner and seat airbag up with the airbag wiring loom in the car, because of how cars are made plugs are used because this is the quickest way on the assembly line to make the connection. The plug does nothing more than connect a series of wires together, so it can be removed and replaced with soldered connections if it is giving trouble. The soldered connection (if soldered well) is much more reliable than the plugs.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 років тому

    There is a clamp that holds the battery in place, on the clio its just a bit of cast aluminium shaped so it grabs the lower edge of the battery, and is held in place with a bolt. You could get one out of a car in a scrapyard. Or alternatively try a DIY approach, get two threaded bars, bend one end so they catch on something below where the battery sits, put them on either side of the battery and get a flat bit of metal to bolt onto the two bars holding the battery down.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  11 років тому

    Possibly get an airbag module/ecu from a car that does not have seat airbags, but that may pose a problem as the cars main ECU or UCH (Unite Centrale Habitacle, or ecu for non engine stuff) may not work with an ecu from a car of different specs, its worth trying renault forums to see if its possible to put an airbag module from a car with no seat airbags into a car that had seat airbags.
    Unless, is the seats you put in airbag equipped seats that have broken sockets by any chance?

    If soldering the wires for the pretensioner doesnt solve it, then yes try the black plug aswell.
    Although i normally find the grey plug to give trouble first, the black one has cable ties on either side to hold the wires tight to the plug, the grey one does not and therefore the wires can get loose easier.

      It may indeed remove the warning light although im not 100% sure it will ensure a functional airbag in the event of a crash. However it probably resulted in an economic saving which is in itself something that may satisfy the definition of an effective repair on an older car.

    Ah right cheers, no it's not had a bump. On diagnostic tool looking at the actual values I can see power to the passenger side and not to the drivers side, I'll try checking the connectors and the wire then just replace it? Reckon a 2nd hand one will be ok to put on?

    My serv light comes on intermittently. Could the under seat be the issue? I've fixed it before, but kept the clip in place, and it did go off for some time, but came back on after a few months. Maybe I should try this way.

      This way means you can be sure its not loose connectors. Failing that plug a diagnostics machine in and see what it says.

    Hi.
    The reverse light won't come on when I put the reverse gear. Sometimes it does, others it doesn't. So I believe it is related with that reverse switch you talked.
    I tried to look under the gear level, but there is a with plastic around it. It does not seem trivial to take it off :( Can you please let me know where I can find that switch? My car as a 1.5 dci engine.
    Thanks again for your help!

    Do you mean the passenger airbag deactivation light, or the general airbag fault light?
    an airbag light (which normally appears with the SERV light) means there is a fault with the airbag system, it might not go off in an accident.
    Have you checked the passenger airbag deactivation switch is still pointing to the on position

    Hi buddy, great video. Do you know what I should do? I hit a curb and the Drivers seat airbag went off. I then replaced the drivers seat and a the ecu with ones from a scrapyard clio (it had not had the airbags go off) but the light Service light and the airbag light is still on the dash. The garage put the seat in, but don't know why the lights wont go out. Any help you could offer would be fantastic. My MOT is soon and I know it wont pass!

    Yea good video helped thanks. Need my crash data erased but thats like30-40 quid with postage cheaper and easier to get another ecu then?
    Got new seat so i believe its a straight swap now?

    Its definatley not near the gearstick or in the cabin, its either around the bellhousing in the engine bay, but i remember from other renaults that its in round behind the passenger side wheel, go to where the driveshaft meets the gearbox, you will see the switch in there, i think its a fairly big socket 24mm.

    Hi I have one with the airbag system iv tried cleaning both the connector (dunno how well as some I couldn't disconnect) and the Ecu still the same??

      Al jones How are the wires under the seat? If there is moisture round the ECU it could have got into it and damaged it, you would need to get the car plugged into a fault code reader to see what its saying

    Conductive yep, but thats good because when the connection is rusty or dirty it isnt conductive, the wd40 restores that conductivity, you could blow it away with an airline if your worried about the pins shorting through the wd40, nonethless thanks for the comment, and good luck with the soldering

      Hi there
      First step, plug in diagnostic equipment and see what the exact fault is

    How do u ensure soldier doesn't come off if this happened would airbag go off

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV
    @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 років тому

    The diagnostic equipment helps to identify which plug is causing the fault, but in most cases if I'm fixing an airbag light for someone i just do both plugs under the passenger and drivers seat without using the diagnostic stuff. It takes a bit more time doing them all, but after it you can rule out a bad connection. When i cut and soldered the parallel wires i just made the wires connect again (the plugs go faulty and stop the wires from connecting right), thus in a crash it should work

  • @Lippy8555
    @Lippy8555 11 років тому

    I've plugged mine into a diagnostic kit and the fault code reads something like "driver side airbag short circuit". Does anyone know what the cause of this could be?

    The drinks holder bit pops out of place, i never cut it out.
    If you then see the airbag ecu covered in any spilt drink, then you can take the rest of the trim surrounding the area out of the way, which is also held in place with a few clips, and having the drinks holder out of the way makes it easier to get the centre console out.

    Any more than just short?
    Check the wiring under the seat, is there evidence of any previous attempt to repair this, especially wires not insulated properly.
