You should have a key inside the fob. If you lift the driver door handle, you'll see a spot for said key. Put it in, turn it to the left, and your door will open.

Dude, there's actually an emergency release for the trunk. It's a cable loop hidden behind the front bumper cover, left side. That will give you access to the battery. Not sure you would be able to pop the trunk lid using the lever under the door without power.

We have a 98 with the same issue. The fuse trick doesn't work and there are no cables on either side

so you couldn't use the key in the door cylinder to unlock the door and get in?
Also for 1999, there is no jumper in the fuse box, that is on later years. The emergency hood release cable is in the right side behind the wheel well plastic.
Why would the alarm go off if the damn battery is dead?‽!
You should really learn about these cars before offering bad advice..

or you could read the manual and finds out that y can open the driver door with the key...what a tool lol
