As a heroin user for 13 years...that state of mind is a set up for failure.. I refused to believe once an addict always an addict. I refused to go to meetings, sponsored, shrinks or head doctors. I stopped the methadone clinic I stopped the suboxine. And the dope. There's wasn't 1 day I missed in 13 years..I'm the definition of a full addict. I remember a doctor at the recovery or detox place asking me before admitting me how many cc's a day do I use...I said cc's wtf does that gotta to do with how much heroin I use. The ccs are the amount of water I tend to use with the drug. I said but at that time I was using a ounce a day. Every day for 6 months.. so my point is this. That should have killed me .. I made up my mind do I want life. Or do I want Hell . I chose life. And if I want to talk about using. Talk about triggers and think about the drug everyday for the rest of my life then I'll go to meetings and counciling etc. Once an addict always an addict is a lie. I'm not saying addiction isn't real. It is. But I refuse to believe I need to think about it and talk about it everyday of my life to give these head doctors and councilors jobs. I did 18 days in detox to manage withdrawal. After that I simply went on with my life. I set goals. I worked. I bought my first home and saved every dime for 1 full year to achieve my goal. I have been clean and free for 2 full years as of December. And guess what. I don't need to be around addicts or so called triggers. But my mind is strong. 11 months after getting clean I broke my ankle and shattered my heal. If that wasn't a test of will power. I let the doctors manage my pain with morphine and oxy I allowed it for 5 days after my surgery and quit then and there. And as an "addict" i had the perfect excuse to start using again. But i didnt. Im no longer an addict period.. i dont dwell on it or even think about it. I go weeks before it crosses my mind..I wouldn't allow myself to get comfortable in that pattern again. After breaking my ankle only 10 or 11 months into my recovery . it was because of breaking my leg in the 1st place 15 years ago that I got addicted to opioid. But to each his own. We have to want it more than we want the drug. It can't be forced upon us. Otherwise you'll need help to stay sober. But when ur mind is made up. It's a powerful thing I have overcome!!
