    patients don't realise is that as nurses it is our aim to relieve pain & keep our patients comfortable. It is the doctors who prescribe and order their meds, & nurses have to follow those orders. We cant just go open up some medication because the patient says so, the pain has to be assessed, then we have to to get a hold of the doctor for approval to administer more. Occassionally we can give a basic analgesia to help, but if it's been only a short time since the last dose, it may not be safe

    In all fairness, the first thing the patient said to the first nurse was "I've been in pain all night and the last nurse did absolutely nothing. All she did was watch TV and take a nap," while with the second nurse the patient first said, "I'm in a lot of pain and no one cares." The second statement would be a lot easier to approach gently. Personally, I feel like with the first one, any kind of response would have led to a downward spiral. "I assure you she wasn't" sounds very cold and arrogant, and saying "oh, really? Oh my goodness I can't believe that happened I'm sorry" makes the patient who is already worried and anxious nobody is concerned for her even more anxious about the quality of service of the hospital staff. Or "yes she probably did I am sorry for her laziness" is also throwing a hardworking coworker under the bus. And when the second nurse said simultaneously as she walked in, "Hi, I'm the manager," which might have affected the way the patient engaged in the conversation. Just a personal thought!

    Some patients can be over dramatic, but at the same time, there are some doctors who honestly do no want to listen to their patients. Sometimes you have to advocate for yourself.

    I remember when I had to go to the hospital for two endoscopic procedures for the price of one...the day before then, I had a strict liquid diet, drinking Sprite, eating JELL-O, beef or chicken broth, etc., and thus I had not had any solids. And if you're going under anesthesia, they tell you not to eat or drink after midnight...before the procedure I was complaining about a headache because I had nothing to eat and drink, not to mention the procedure sheet said that days before the procedure you're not supposed to take any pain meds (Advil, Tylenol, Aleve, etc.) as they have blood thinners. I got so restless and angry over the headache...finally when the anesthesiologist came in and started my IV where they'd administer my anesthesia and such, he gave me some so-called "goofy juice" that made me calm until they took me into the room where I had the procedure done. Needless to say, even after I woke up from the anesthesia in PACU, I still had that headache. At least I was so groggy that I barely cared. When the nurse in PACU asked if anything was hurting me, I told her about the headache and she administered some medication through my IV.

    I always try to get the nurses laughing, and smiling. Even as a patient. Many years ago I figured out a way to avoid losing the call bell. Tied the cord to the upper side rail. Of four patients in the ward I was the only one who could reach their buzzer. Each time I rang for a nurse I would say "Ms ------ needs her nurse.". One night, after hearing "Shelley? You awake?? for the seventh time, and ringing the nurses station I began saying " This is call bell central. Ms-------------- is asking for her nurse." That got my nurse chuckling.

    Having a prior customer service job before becoming a nurse would be of great help when it comes to deal with people. Knowing how to answer back and what to say is very important, especially when you are dealing with sick people

    Actually, when you're in a crap ton of pain, anything that gives you a rush of endorphins...like sugar does, can ease the pain for a short period!
    Problem with sugar is, that longterm, it will intensify pain. Generally, people who suffer from pain should avoid sugar (although we're all different, so some ppl are exceptions).
    BUT, there are times, when the benefit of the relief that it gives, makes it VERY WORTHWHILE, in small doses and/or for short periods of time!!!

  • @oluwadamilapeter

    My mother was a nurse for 31 years and if ever had a problem with a doctor or nurse she taught me how to handle it. When I had my oldest son in the hospital the labor and delivery ward were all very nice. But when I got to the post partum ward they were nasty. They wouldn't give me a breast pump. They wanted me to breast feed when my milk hadn't come in yet to where I could breast feed. It's like dude I can't breast feed when my milk isn't in yet! I felt the let down as my mom called it but there was milk coming out so I asked for a pump. They refused Soni ended up having to bottle feed my son which I really didn't want to do in the first place. Then when I asked for pain medication because everyone knows childbirth is painful and even after you have a baby it still hurts the accused me of being a drug seeker. So I told my mom what happened and she got a hold of the charge nurse. Well let me tell you my mom tore her a new asshole lol. Let's just say she called her every name but a white woman lol.

      eric johnson cleary u feel stupid u didnt specify that its SOME nurses that are like that. accept ur mistake and my very correct rebuttal because u generalized. im not a nurse, its just disrespectful to nurses that u said that and ill roast ur ass for generalizing. accept ur mistake and move on instead of writing a god damn paragraph about how much money they make and they should be happy. clearly ur broke if u think money would solve all issues.

    • @ericjohnson6471
      @ericjohnson6471 9 років тому +1

      El Chapo money would solve lack of money issues... yes I do think that. do you think that floor cleaners/ people who work in the little coffee shop should make more money than security?? in a hospital with a huge mental health wing?? and if so how much more??
      you think security should get 11 bucks while floor cleaner gets 22 all because security is a private greedy company contracting them out?? what if that company actually received 22$ an hour per guard but only paid then 11..?
      pffft.. your out of your depth
      and as far as NURSES.. my comment was a direct reply to the dialogue in the video.. when I responded to you I said plenty.. which does not imply all.. fun fact though nurses DO watch shit and nap on night shift... did I say ALL?? no.. again you read it the way you wanted to.. some will also frequently sit around in a group of 4 not checking their patients talking about where they would like to go on vacation one day.
      clearly I don't feel stupid. sorry to disappoint you..
      I would point that finger right at you chapo. PLENTY can mean SOME but not all..
      good luck roasting my ass when you cant even read... I accept no mistake and I wrote you a paragraph just like you asked for.
      if you want another one I type 105 wpm so just let me know and it will be on its way
      CHEERS FUCKFACE

    • @trillestjebronlames
      @trillestjebronlames 9 років тому +1

      eric johnson lol congrats on your typing speed. too bad you dont know the difference between your and you're. so you should feel stupid about that.
      but more importantly you clearly are just talking shit about nurses because they make more money. ha! definition of a hater. go to school and educate yourself and level up on the pay scale instead of being envious that they make more money. youre the type to snitch to the administration and ask for a raise to be their personal snitch rather than levelling up yourself.
      why would you point that finger at me when you can barely hold a job as security? too bad your incredible typing skills wont help at your shitty job. they dont just throw money around dumbass. nurses went to school to get that job and salary. so quit being a crying bitch and level up NIGGA!!

    This lady isn't in pain! Try pain! I miscarried in 1972 .I was 6 months along. My husband was on the road driving truck so he was not with me. I went into severe pain, excessive bleeding, flushing etc. I drove to the hospital. They admitted me..no one spoke English, no pain meds. but coopeious amounts of blood. The nurses would appear and tell me to shut up..I was disturbing other patients. My bed filled with blood.
    Never changed the bedding. I survived but my son didn't. Should have filed suit!

    yah and when people are in pain now they just give you ibuprofen so i guess we should take away all pain management and have people at the nearest methadone clinic
    or just suffer through it

    • @redroseracer
      @redroseracer  6 років тому

      Vanessa Carroll there are different types of pain management for different types of pain. Narcotics can be given if the condition is severe enough to warrant admission to a hospital unit where a patient can be under observation. Remember that narcotics have serious side effects that can be dangerous and addictive leading people dependant on narcotics to require methadone to safely wean. Thanks for viewing!
