Didn't know about or played Wavy Navy, but i did play Insects in Space, think it was included on a magazine cover disk. And if we're talking obscure Space Invaders clones, "Better Dead than Alien" must be mentioned. A game that had a better title than the actual game itself ;)
Love this series of the lesser known C64 games. I've played both, variations of Space Invaders and Defender and both are brilliant to play. 94% though as you say is over the top in Zzap
Hewsom made some memorable games. I remember enjoying StormLord on the Amiga. Lovely pixel art. Alas, i thought it would be more Ghosts n Goblins type action instead of plodding puzzle platformer. Still pretty alright
Bandits was awesome! Spent so many hours playing this game. Never played Wavy Navy or naked woman (omg the boobs ... AHAHAHAHAHAHAA! Damn, that's hilarious :D), i mean insects in space, though. Wavy Navy actually looks like tons of fun!
I was just playing this on Apple II last week! Glad to see you covering it, I also tried the C64 version but for me, this is one of those rare instances where I found the Apple version to be more fun, I do prefer the Apple version over the C64 version. I hate the term but I actually think the game is somewhat overrated, its a lot of fun, I loved playing it as a kid back in the day.
I've never played the Apple II version properly so the C64 one is simply the version I know well , most Apple II to C64 conversions are pretty dire to be honest as they never really understood the massive differences between both systems .
@@BastichB64K yes I agree, I dont think they bothered too many times to improve on an Apple port. Well, we often got a soundtrack that we didnt have on the Apple II :)
Wavy Navy is fun, I did a feature on Sirius Software for The Retrogaming Times. It's character-based rather than using sprites, presumably reusing code from the Apple-II version. I am a HUGE fan of Insects in Space, developed by Sensible Software. The music by Martin Galway is fantastic, and the gameplay is heavily inspired by Stargate. I've logged one of the highest scores for it, over 600,000. Once you get into the groove, it's a fantastic shooter. ZZAP! rated it highly because it was effectively budget price for a great shoot 'em up (it's one of four games on the 4th Dimension compilation from Hewson.)
I figured it was still using Apple 2 code , all those old conversions seem to have been done in the same way , Conan suffers terribly because of that which is a shame
I played Wavy Navy quite a bit on the Apple II at school. And later on my C64.
Its a cool variation on the formula done in a fun way
Loved Wavy Navy as a kid. It was one of those games that none of my friends knew about.
Yeah it was kinda obscure on the C64 , its more known as an Apple II game .
I love Bandits, one of my favourites
Thats a great invaders clone , good choice to feature in this series also 👍👍
Deep cutz.. ❤🎉
Wavy Navy is great. I preferred it over Space Invaders.
Can't argue with that , it's an extremely fun variation

Yeah was never a fan of Better Dead Than Alien the title and 50's sc-fi cover art was a 1000 times better than the actual game 😂👍
Two games that i never knew or even have seen.
Still waiting for the ocean tai-pan game review. The battle on the sea, the trading.
Yeah fun couple of games , forgot about Tsi pan , would like to cover it at some point
Thanks for showing this great games. And amazing whats today possible with "Soul Force" on a C64.
Yeah the modern new wave C64 games are amazing

Its fun to highlight these off the radar games , they deserve the attention in the grand C64 gaming history

I loved the gfx and sound on the C64 for Stormlord but you're right the plodding nature of the game gets a bit tiresome
The jet sprites look like from 'save new york' game.
It does look very similar
That Bandits game reminds me of Spider Fighter.
Its very similar in style

Wavy Navy is very fun , definitely give it a try

I had insects in space but it's a bit too fast, never seen wavey navy before that looks great.
Wavy Navy is lots of fun , enjoy
