This is great. I mocked up a design earlier today but using bar neodymium magnets... and lo and behold you've done the exact same design! Thanks as I was puzzling over a few things like mounting the magnets in the routed holes!
Great video, I have a question. I wondered why you didn’t consider drilling holes deep enough with a foster bit glue magnets in and put an accenting plug to cover them something like walnut? I’m not sure it would have worked but just a thought. I really enjoyed the video, and being a retired chef I appreciate great knives.
This is one of the best videos i'v seen on how to do rack like this one, thank you. Just wondering how much wood did you have left between your magnet and a knife and what grade magnets did you use? Also why did you use different kind/size of magnets on the sides compared to the middle of the board.
Good questions - I left the thinnest amount of wood I felt safe doing. If it breaks thru you have to start over with new timber - so 4mm. Could have gone thinner but did not want the risk. I also used two sizes as I realised I needed more 'power' - rather than buying more, I used some I had bought previously, no other reason. 20, 12x6mm neodymium magnets - AUS$50. I could have done with 30 but it is a fine line between being strong enough to hold a knife and being too strong so you have to use one hand to hold the unit steady while pulling the knife with the other hand...
