Giant Soap Bubbles at Night - Unearthly Colors

  • If you watch in anything less than HD you're missing out!
    Some incredible colors are captured in these giant soap bubbles. The reflections and lighting are from two 75W fluorescent light bulbs behind the camera. Notice how the colors reflected off the bubbles change as more and more are created in the same shot. This is best noticed with the first three bubbles made in the very start of the video. The first bubble has the most variety of color because the wand was soaking wet and could provide enough fluid for a thick bubble wall, the next bubble however had a thinner wall and reflected mostly green. The last bubble in the series was almost entirely limited to blue and a few hints of red. This is caused by a prism effect that changes as the bubbles become thinner and thinner. An interesting bit of bubble science.

    Great! Let me know how it goes! It works best when it's cool and humid, and it takes some practice so give it a little time and you'll have it figured out.

    I'm going to try it on smaller bubbles and see if it's noticeable. If it's a really nice effect I'll make a video, but I sort of doubt it will make much visible difference with how thin bubbles are.

    The colored reflections you see are how bubbles reflect white light.

    I've been thinking of trying it in a lit parking lot at night where there are likely to be other people around to see it. I could get some fun reactions.

    You should try to put some sort of liquid fluorescence in the bubble soap, like glow paint. That would be pretty bad ass

  • @ryanbailey6226

    Dude, I just discovered your page and am an instant fan. Question...have you tried the bubble formula with some of the fluorescing liquid added in and viewed with blacklights going? I know that'd be tough to video but I wondered if it'd be viewable to the naked eye. Anyway, enjoying your videos. Thank you!

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight  10 років тому +2

      A number of people have done that but only will small bubbles from what I've seen. I think it would take some pretty powerful black lights to make it work but it's worth a shot. It's too cold outside now for me to play with bubbles but I might try some other time.

    Nice bubbles. Btw, the explanation of the colors given in the video description is not correct. bubble colors are not the result of a prism effect (refraction) but of thin-film interference which results from light being reflected from both the front and back wall of the soap film. The slight difference in the distance that the two rays travel causes them to be out of phase and results in cancellation of some of the light's colors. This is why the order of the colors is much more complex than a rainbows. Worth looking up to see an illustrated explanation.

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight  7 років тому +1

      Very cool, I hadn't heard that before. Much more interesting that it's caused by interference

    I'm not sure if this is true but I read somewhere a while back, can't remember the source but if I find it I'll give it to you, that says that stronger "unpoppable" bubbles that can be made up to 1m in diameter can be made using a corn starch formula. If you want to try and create potentially stronger bubbles I'd recommend experimenting.

  • @VictorLepanto

    If you do this again you should have some on the camera pan to see how far the bubbles can last.
