The problem is Ron Okumura identifies himself as American. As long as he remains principle of the school there will be no changing of the name, even if the majority of the school wants the name change. I think supporters of the campaign may likely to have a broader conversation with a different principle. Ron Okumura is clearly one sided.
Principal Okamura's position of "hearing both sides of the argument" is simply ignorant. A valid argument assume multiple sides to a story. There are simply facts in this case. Hawai'i was illegally annexed by the US. End of discussion. Change the name.
So how do you explain this...if you keep the statute and you keep the name to use it as teaching tool to educate students about the history of what President McKinleyʻs role was in the illegal annexation of Hawai‘i. What happens when students disagree with what he did and develop emotions and opinions about him that may be negative. Would they still want to be recognized as a graduate of a school named after a man they think negatively about? Would the statue be a symbol of pride that unites students and makes them feel a sense of ownership of their alma mater when they look upon it with the knowledge that they have now learned? Would it be a symbol of pride. People say cancel culture, I say it is cultural enlightenment. When you know something is wrong, you must make it right. That is what our keiki should be learning. This is how we find peace.
The people who cared knew about it. Those who don’t care about it don’t listen. Truth is a powerful tool to educate. Please open your mind to that truth.
Then if nobody cares then why fight to keep it. If the name means nothing then let’s at least let it stand for a name that does mean something. I rather it mean something.
If we change one we change all. Cannot pick and choose schools. All names got some kind of dirt on them but when will it all end? There are many outstanding alumni who's represented Hawaii and the US in a manner totally opposite of William McKinley. One of the main purpose of our education system is to mold outstanding individuals in society. This name had none and will not have any effect on this purpose. Instead of changing the names, let's start with the curriculum being taught in our education system by ensuring it reflect not some but all truth of history.

Unfortunately changing names doesn't change the current situation especially with the navy polluting the largest water resource in Hawaii
It's a start.
Yes! Change the name. Why would you want to be associated with such SHAME! Why?
The school should have never been named after him. Never.
What is a brand worth when it's acquired from the suffering of a whole race of people.
I'm guessing Israel doesn't have a school named Hilter High School. Just guessing not.
YES! The name should be changed. And the Statue should be removed. Who gave the name changers the right to change it before?
to change is for the better for the future generations. Warriors, time stamp the result. Only a new generation would change for any kind of result.
Am I the only one who never thought a thing if someone said they’re a McKinley grad besides the fact their alma mater worships a racist imperialist?
Just change it back to Honolulu high, they already made the decision to change it before, doesn't seem that hard to change it back

name means nothing. no one even knew this until it became a topic. just ignore and leave it alone. nobody cares.

So continuing to be ignorant is ok to you. Cant say no one cares.

People do care. It's just you that doesn't care. I'm guessing Israel doesn't have a school named Hilter High School. Just guessing.
