I literally just turned fifteen!! Could you do a video about other books like that? Like foundational books you wish you'd read when you were fifteen? It just seems like such an interesting way of describing books and I'd love to see more.
So glad you've finally read My Brilliant Friend, always wanted to know what you thought of it. Hope you pick the next three up soon! Also glad to see an italian author get all the appreciation. Hugs from Italy🤗
Also, I'm reading The Bear and the Nightingale right now and from how you describe Daughter of the Forest, they seem to have some parallels... I've actually owned Daughter of the Forest longer and you are making me wish I had read it sooner 😄
Now that you have read the first book of the My Brilliant Friend series, you'll have to check out season one on HBO. It's in Italian and probably one of the best shows (if not the best show) I have ever seen. The acting, the story, the emotion... oh my goodness. There are no words.. it's absolutely stunning! And the later books / seasons are somehow even better!
Absolutely adored Kaikeyi. As an Indian growing up in India...she is universally known in a certain way by not just me but probably throughout the nation. Yeah, more than a billion people know her in one way. And the way the story is reimagined here...it is massive on so many levels.
I am such a sucker for retellings too. And, Daughter of the Forest has been one of my all time favorite books since I first read it soon after it was released. I'm rereading it now, in fact, this time as an audiobook. Highly recommend it; the narrator is wonderful. Interestingly, my love of retellings is what led me to the book in the first place. It's actually a retelling of The Six Swans from Grimm's Fairy Tales. So glad you enjoyed it so much! The rest of the series is also wonderful.
I’m so glad you enjoyed Daughter of the Forest! Since you enjoyed her writing, have you ever considered the Tamír Triad trilogy by Lynn Flewelling? She’s another wonderful female fantasy author. Her character and world building is really lovely and I was sad to leave her characters behind when I finished it.
I totally agree with Book of Night. Very much a meh. It didn’t start picking up or becoming interesting to me until about 70% (audiobook). I added a couple of your reads to my tbr. I just wrapped up 11 books in May.
Just finished the Cartographers. Great recommendation. The only version the library had was the LARGE PRINT. Reading it was really easy. Definitely a page turner.
YES Daughter of the Forest is one that I literally couldn't put down and read in a single day. And I came out of it with SO many emotions about all the characters and everything they'd gone through. One of the most moving books I've ever read.
I'm glad I'm not the only one, I thought Kaikeyi started quite slow too (I almost gave it up) but I ended up happy I persevered. Thought her breaking the fourth wall occasionally really gave you a unique insight into her as a character :)
Ah, deciding whether to read Book of Night is such a rollercoaster. I actually never had any intention to pick it up but the description in your VLOG sounded super cool (also, my current D&D character does shadow magic so I'm biased). I'm really disappointed now that the book itself is not that great, I'm not sure if I should read it now.
Book of Night was a 2.5 star for me. just didn’t find any elements particularly enticing, it wasn’t bad but just meh. I was waiting for that holly black atmosphere in her writing but I felt the writing here was just kind of flat ? maybe it’s the transition to new adult or the mostly entirely contemporary world, but I don’t know. I agree with what you said abt the marketing and saw a lot of people saying the same, it was said to be mix of Ninth House and Night Circus but to me it’s nowhere near those two, it just lacks the things that make those books great. I also didn’t really connect with Charlie (I get the flashbacks had a point but I felt totally dragged through them) which made it a little more difficult. I’ll also read book two because I really like holly black and I hope she’ll find ways to give this story the magic spice it’s missing
You just convinced me to finally pick up My Brilliant Friend this summer! Some of my recent favorites are Beartown by Fredrik Backman and Hamnet my Maggie O'Farrell 💛
I can't remember - have you read The Coldest Girl in ColdTown and/or The Darkest Part of the Forest? Because that's exactly what The Book of Night reminded me of. Almost less Urban Fantasy and more alternate universe, where there's very little explanation of the world or characters.
For someone who DID read DOTF as a 15yr old, this was such a foundational read for me and it's hard not to compare all new books to it. I just released a video of "where to start with Juliet Marillier" if you want to get ideas of what other JM books you might like
Kaykeyi sounds really interesting. Another interesting “retelling” is “The Mists of Avalon” by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It’s a retelling of the Arthurian legend but from the perspective of the women, especially Morgan le Fay (Morgana) who is often portrayed as an antagonist.
Here's what I read in may Billy summers by Stephen king Baggage by alan cumming his second memoir Among thieves The black coast by Mike Brooks The dragon reborn by Robert Jordan Twice shy by Sarah hogle My dark vanessa by kate Elizabeth Russell Norwegian wood by haruki murakami Satisfaction guaranteed The witch haven The friend zone by abby Jimenez Everything must go by camille pagen Beautiful world where are you by sally Rooney Bloodchild by Anna Stephens Act your age eve brown Age of swords by Michael j Sullivan Blind kiss by renee carlino
Try Elena ferrante “lying life of adults”. I enjoyed it much more then my brilliant friend. Also my brilliant friend is part of a quartet!! Also Elena ferrante book “the lost daughter” just became a movie too!
If you like her books please try sally Rooney! I loved normal people so much more. Both writers write about life and the mundane aspects and that’s why I love it.
I’ve never read anything by Holly Black so I found the book to be fine nothing great. I saw it more as a mystery then a fantasy. I will definitely pick up the next one. I felt the same way about the Atlas Six. It was okay, I just kept waiting for something to happen.
You are so kind and optimistic to keep reading a series where you gave the first book such a low rating. I can't even consider keeping on less the first is a 4-5 star, lol, I read slowly and my tbr (despite my kicking its butt lately) is still 180. I'm not even reading the sequel to Reybearer, even though I gave it 4 stars, because I know it'll be a show that'll take less commitment and while I really liked the first book and get why ppl go on about it, I was impatient for it to end. But maybe I'd be more forgiving and focused if I was a pro, lol! Unpaid reading has got to GRAB me
Wait Daughter of the Forest sounds exactly like Six Crimson Cranes - are they both based on the same legend? Literally the same trope of step-mother casting a spell on the brothers and king, princess losing her voice and going on a quest to get them back
As a chemical engineer, I’m always nervous to get into books that claim to have a “science” based magic system. What if they’re dumb? 😭 I really wanna like The Atlas Six but that little bit has got me nervous
So proud of you Regan for reading all the books all in May you did great and I believe in you will read a lot in June! Xoxo 😚 ✨✨🤍💓💞💝🌈🤎📚📚💜🖤💘💙💗💝📖💓📖💝📙📙✨🤍🧡🤍✨📙📙💖❣️❤️🔥❤️🔥❣️💖📙💗💝💘🖤🌈🤎🤎🌈🌈🌈💚📚💜🖤💘💙❤️❤️💙🌈🤎📚🖤💘💗💝🤍🧡✨💝💞💜💜🖤💘💗💖❣️❤️🔥❤️🔥❣️💖💖💖💗💗💛💛💛💙💙❤️

You're right, there's nothing more disappointing than having "MYEH" feelings about a book. I want STRONG opinions when I read something, not like, mild disappointment. Hahahaha.

My Brilliant friend is actually part of a quartet. You have 3 books left 😄 They are all so good.
Also, I'm reading The Bear and the Nightingale right now and from how you describe Daughter of the Forest, they seem to have some parallels... I've actually owned Daughter of the Forest longer and you are making me wish I had read it sooner 😄

Came here to say this!!
Yes… Already watched the first two seasons, but keeping the third one for when the fourth is released…
Absolutely adored Kaikeyi. As an Indian growing up in India...she is universally known in a certain way by not just me but probably throughout the nation. Yeah, more than a billion people know her in one way.
And the way the story is reimagined here...it is massive on so many levels.
I’m curious what you mean by that comment.
I’m so glad you loved Daughter of the Forest!! I did read it in middle school and it was absolutely a foundational read for me. I love it so much 💕
Very good review of Kaikeyi! Loved the book as well!

I keep hearing such amazing things about Daughter of the Forest, I really want to pick it up soon!

You can check out forest of enchantments it is a retelling of ramayana from sitas pov
I just order Kaikeyi. I have heard that the beginning is slow from others as well. Still really excited for it. Great wrap-up.
I love Daughter of the Forest so much!! It is so so good, it floored me
I'm glad I'm not the only one, I thought Kaikeyi started quite slow too (I almost gave it up) but I ended up happy I persevered. Thought her breaking the fourth wall occasionally really gave you a unique insight into her as a character :)
I really want to get Kaikeyi, just waiting for the paperback. Glad you had a good reading month!

I highly recommend the series adaptation of My Brillant Friend on HBO Max, if only to experience the story in Italian. They did an awesome job!
You just convinced me to finally pick up My Brilliant Friend this summer! Some of my recent favorites are Beartown by Fredrik Backman and Hamnet my Maggie O'Farrell 💛

I read the all volumes in SevenWaters and the first 4 volumes are phenomenal !
kaikeyi was so good
I had to pause your video Regan and go buy My Brilliant Friend, looking at the covers hope that the 3rd one didn't spoil anything lol. Thank you!!
Daughter of the forest sounds like it has the same plot is six Crimson cranes. Do you think they are similar?
There are 4 books in Elena Ferrante's series, so it's a tetralogy. ;)
I’ve had My Brilliant Friend on my tbr for so long. You’ve just bumped it to my next read. 🙂
For someone who DID read DOTF as a 15yr old, this was such a foundational read for me and it's hard not to compare all new books to it. I just released a video of "where to start with Juliet Marillier" if you want to get ideas of what other JM books you might like
Daughter Of The Forest sounds very similar to Six Crimson Cranes just a more adult version and different area of the world.
Such a concise and fascinating wrap up!
My favorite read from May was Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. It really hit my feels like I want appreciating
I was just looking at that book at the bookstore today! Would you recommend to someone who knows nothing about Arthurian legends?
@@BlinkFly Absolutely! I fell in love with the women in this book.

I’ve heard so many people say how disappointed they were in Book of Night. It’s supposed to be adult but they say it still reads like YA
i just discovered your channel but you look exactly like robin from stranger things! keep making videos girl, you have such a talent!
As a chemical engineer, I’m always nervous to get into books that claim to have a “science” based magic system. What if they’re dumb? 😭 I really wanna like The Atlas Six but that little bit has got me nervous

My brlliant friend is a four part book series, not a trilogy 💖
‘T H E L A D Y O F H E A V E N 2021’😊
please read the shiva trilogy bu amish. it's the BEST BOOK SERIES EVER ON EARTH i love it with my whole heart 💗 it's a retelling about lord shiva life but what if he was a human like us. it's set in historic timeline.
Book of Night sounds so good. Too bad it was a meh 😕
You're right, there's nothing more disappointing than having "MYEH" feelings about a book. I want STRONG opinions when I read something, not like, mild disappointment. Hahahaha.
I felt absolutely nothing for the characters or story while reading Book of Night. It weirdly felt more YA than The Cruel Prince. 2/5
honestly agree!!
Hi
Tan eik fai l am 22 years malaysia loph😉☺😏🐨🐹hi 💃🐨
Book of Night reallllly seemed like it was by a YA writer. Like she’s a teenager yelling curse words at the mall. Just didn’t transition well to adult writing, you know? Also like she thinks a book is adult just because it’s bogged down in mundanity and unnecessary detail.
its booving
