hikaru beating one of the top 3 players in japan in one of the game’s worst matchups is such an incredible testament to his skill as a competitor
It isn't really "one of the worst matchups" if you can grab them at 50 anywhere on stage and they're probably dead. Basically, both characters should be dead if they get hit
@@CookieGal- 50? Maybe 100... But that is true for like a every character vs DK Plus you gotta hit them to get them to that point. It is not a incredibly awful matchup but it is pretty bad
It is true that he is really good but it is also best of three. Why best of three?
Play this matchup all the time as aegis, it's not even close to being one of the games worst matchups. While if the aegis plays perfectly dk can't do much, dk controls the ground with dtilt, ftilt, and his very good grab. If you get hit by dtilt at 50-60, if it trips(which it has a 47% chance to), you die. If he gets a grab at 65ish percent to 75ish you die. In no way am I saying this matchup is winning or even even for dk, but he has tools to kill aegis at early percents unlike other characters like low tiers such as ganon
It's really not that bad, -1 for donkey Kong, but aegis doesn't have a lot of cheese, and donkey Kong is made of it, so it's like neutral is hell for dk and disadvantage is hell, but he can randomly kill aegis super early, which they aren't doing to him. This set pretty much encapsulates all of what I said.
Commentators were questioning the DK pick at the start of the set, but Hikaru showed them lol - his DK is no slouch

Yea dk versus swordies is hard because they bully him for the fatness really badly, there's a few good things swordies generally have weak punish games so that's okay and his tilts have no hand hit boxes so he actually has about the same range on the ground as most swordies but that's honestly more of an advantage against characters with smaller hitboxes
He played really qell but shuton was doing some questionable stuff, he should not have lost this

A good DK can mix up recovery surprisingly well tbh
@@thatdude3977 definitely well enough to avoid Ray of Punishment or down air off stage, down air at ledge on reaction to the Up B recovery starting should be a different story though
Was really hard to see him go for d-tilts to get extensions on the ledge trap when he had ample time to jump off and dair. I though he was conditioning but it looks like the DK pick just tilted him.
@TeaRzOfTheFalleN i dont think ive ever seen pyra down tilt connect on a 2frame attempt, and ive seen alot of mkleo, cosmos, old sparg0 games, i just feel like the dair spike is way more consistent.
There's nothing more hype in smash than DK.

I was glad hikaru won but shuton had no reason to lose this literally so many spike opportunities were there and shuton used down tilt of all things. Plus it's AEGIS against DK how do you lose that match up
tbf, dtilt is good against heavies on ledgetraps... but mythra dtilt is not what you want to use. Pyra dtilt into forward air is securing the kill

And he was correct seeing the result of this match, he managed to win and at the end of the day, winning is the only thing that matters right ?
@@fourniervictor9354 This is exactly the reason why hikaru pulled it off. DK is one of the most momentum heavy characters in the game. Once he gets in with weak hit dash attack, unless you have a really good reversal option he gets a free pass to mash out a second option, which catches people off guard and opens them up. Down tilt is also a godsend in neutral because of how often it can trip, leading into a grab.
Therein lies the problem with DK though; since he is a very "all or nothing" character, all you have to do is pretty much space him out and prevent him from getting in, which is why he's atrocious against sword characters.

Hikaru played very well this set, but also...Honestly, Aegis just isn't that good of a character. She's too predictable. She's the most generic swordie possible, just with speed and strength being split in two. I think in a couple months this character's use rate will drop down significantly.
Shuton did not play this matchup that well honestly. This character is really good, particularly against a character like donkey kong. There is no reason he should have lost this. Should have tried to punish him more of stage and maybe he should have just stayed mythra more if he was not going to ledge trap.

But the thing is, mythra has possibly the best neutral in the entire game, even with how predictable she is. It doesn’t matter if you know what she’s doing if it’s unpublishable. Sooner or later you will slip up

Lol I knew shuton was going to lose the set within a minute of first stock when he showed he had no idea how to secure a guaranteed edgeguard kill and later went for dash attack instead of securing the stock at 1:05. He plays aegis like he just picked them up a few days ago. The wins he got this game were just character carries.

Aegis is the only top tier character who can die pretty easily just because of a mis input or a good edgeguard

I think a region in Texas had some dlc free tournaments. Pretty dumb in my opinion but each their own.
@@chachawho435 tbh dlc characters have shown to consistently be op (Bayo in smash 4, Steve, Pythra, probably another I dont know much about bc I play melee)
