Lucy Lim Explains OSIRIS-REx, an Asteroid Sample Return, with Neil deGrasse Tyson
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Today, @NASA launches its most ambitious sample return mission since Apollo, OSIRIS-Rex, where they’ll collect an asteroid sample (after landing on it!) and bring it back to Earth.
How will they collect the sample? Will it knock the asteroid off its course? Is there a risk for radiation exposure to affect the sample? What does OSIRIS-REx even mean? Lucy Lim, an Assistant Project Scientist on OSIRIS-REx and Research Scientist at @NASA Goddard's Solar System Exploration Division in Maryland, answers all of these questions and more in this week’s Explainer with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice.

The dead look on Lucy's face when Chuck says "you are counting on the sun to basically do the job for you"
Yeah it kinda triggered somethin there
Ya i thought she lost connection or something and missed it. If Neil said it she would have laughed.
Na she was being bullied .....well it lands Jeremy in 2023 in less than 12 hrs so that should be cool
I always give Dr. Tyson's videos a like before I watch them just in case I might forget later. No other channel is on that level.
Same. I'm sure the content deserves it before I even watch it
Dude .... Kurzgesagt
Word... StarTalk, PBS Eons and No Life Shaq, LOL only ones for me!
Startalk explainers are usually awesome, this one unfortunately lacked a lot of the information i had hoped for. So, more details would have been nice.
I deadass do the same thing. Every fact he saids is an insult to science haters😂💯

"You are literally going to tap that asteroid."
Lol
thats how a meteorite got its name , a scientist spotted a rock that fell from outer space , pointed and then said, thats a meteor, right.
Two astronomers chilling, looking at the night sky when suddenly a meteor crashes.
A1: Meteor?
A2: Right. *nods*
Later in the space-geologist office: "Hey guys I was just on this show and...well... have we really thought about safety?"
Ikr!
Her face went like ⊙﹏⊙ at 14:00
@@kennethantonyjohn2708 lol you drew her very accurately😂😂
"What about the safety?"
**long pause**
Oh dear.
"It's 2020! What's the worst that could happen?"
Meteors are constantly falling on earth so

Wow.... thanks
For the information over the years and this is another addition to the collection of information that is "StarTalk".
Really thanks for making enjoyable things that just make me want to learn more.
Thanks, StarTalk and Lucy. I actually have Goddard memories from childhood. In the mid-50s, our Dad trained in Allergy / Immunology at UVA. One of the perks for Residents were Sunday Steak lunch privileges for immediate family, and we’d parade across campus once a week, for the feast. I always kept an eye out for cables, stretched out above, because I’ve been a fan of speculative fiction, forever. Weekends were when Goddard’s students would test their little experimental rockets, flying them overhead, tethered to the cables.
And OSIRIS REX lucked out, I think - the raspberry-blowing sampler sank much deeper into the surface, than originally planned!
9:46 Chuck: "You are literally gonna tap dat assteroid." 🤣
I literally laughed out loud
“Tap that assteroid” -Chuck Nice, 2020
"It's geology man." - Lucy Lim, 2020
it deserved so much more laughter lol
It's 1 A.M here And tomorrow is my Test & i want to sleep immediately but now I can't 🙏
Thank u very much Neil
Oop
Great..its not just me who set his alarm at 2:15 Am to watch nasa live...😉
@@Imsinghsudipto wait..so it will be live tomorrow?
I hope you did well on the test!!! Cheers!

6:19 for anyone wondering where this is at
That sounded very cool 😂
Bruh she sounded done when he didn’t know the difference between lava and magma
@@epicswirl TBH... I was a little shocked too. But in all honesty this guy knows crazy information & just never stumbled on that. It was quite a cool moment.
Astrogeology.
Mood shifted ever so slightly at the light-hearted sun doing their job line, which made it doubly funny.
I usually skip ads online, but I saw one yesterday and had to stop for a second. It was Chuck!
wait..chuck is in an ad???
You guys are so much fun to listen to! Thank you for sharing knowledge in a fun way with our family. We thoroughly enjoy all of your content. #startalk #scienceiscool #astrophysics #nasa
We need more hour long videos!! I love the explainers they are just too short!!
agreed
Correct
But it needs to be just chuck and neil
Neil tries to be a comedian. Chuck tries to be a physicist.
It's like freaky Friday. 😂
They are rubbing of on each other
You trying to be a physiologist 🤣🤣🤣
Don't ask me what that is🙄😂
@@campFTW physiology is the study of functions of living things, and parts. You're thinking of psychology, while trying to be a comedian
Neil knows how to explain things to create interest with facts and information. He speaks clearly
CHUCK down to earth honest concerns are the questions I have thanks Chuck!!!
Im very excited and awaiting the live stream to begin. Go NASA, Go Osiris Rex
Lucy Lim, you rock! Congrats on the mission success!
Explainer in chief ? Well said !
6:03 it should be referred to as a "Volca-bulary" lesson since you are talking about volcanoes 😅
13:54 she wasn't laughing
watched and read most of Mr. Tyson fir many, many years. Just fascinating. Wish Dad was still alive to see this. He would be thrilled, like I am.
I'm watching this 2 years later, and the sample arrived on Earth today.
this ep was so funny 4:36
L: when you look at our meteorites - the space rocks that come to us.
N: Come to us for FREE
L: Exactly! which is totally awesome; we love them!
Brought back successfully!
Neil De Grass Tyson "The chief explainer" 🙌
Hi, been listening to the podcast for only a few days, but boyyyyy is this great
I started binge watching since I found this 😂 the episodes with chuck are the best, and thankfully he is on a lot because he is the main co-host
Absolutely love star talk! I look forward to seeing notifications for a new video!
Chuck is amazing ... having him is delightful 🔥
Thank you for this!
Heard on another video that when the disc of 'Osiris Rex' touched the surface of bennu, instead of a reaction force as was expected from a hard surface, the arm actually got pressed into the asteroid by abt 1/2 meters, showing that it was sort of porous.
Can u determine by some ground penetrating radar or such that on a collision wth earth how much of it would be vaporized & how much would strike ground(angle of impact hence time within atmosphere considered) considering that its made of loosely held rocks.
Love it! 💕
That was funny, and informative!
"You are literally gonna tap dat asteroid"
"Yes"
legendary
Thanks Lucy!! You know your stuff!
Pretty sure Neil’s safety concern question made NASA call in an emergency meeting the next day.
Chuck was in top form! Such a shame his punchlines kept going over the guest’s head.
I thought that's what made it so funny 🤣
On space collection, do we have or should we have a net or collector in strategic places in space , to collect and return samples to earth
Great 'splainin, thx y'all. 👏🏽
Just watching right after the sample returned. Unbelievable. NASA❤
Do we have the footage?
I have to say...Chuck's fro is on point!
You are the explainer and chief :D
Magma and lava is like the fish in spanish, if the fish is still free in the water then fish in spanish is PEZ, but if is not free anymore then fish in spanish is PESCADO
Who else is here after watching Beau’s video on Bennu? One more day before Osiris-Rex is back!
Fascinating. ✌🏼🖤🌌
Another early finish from nightshift and this one pops up, awesome! ☕
"You are literally going to tap that asteroid."
Crickets
That was an amazing line!
Man, Chuck was on fire in this one XD
9:46 needs more recognition man. Wth 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Watched in a heartbeat!
Wow! Cool to be one the first 500 views!!! & I just RANDOMLY got on & checked to! It had been posted only 4mins ago too, so talk about lucky coincidence!!! =D How neat!
You guys are the TEAM....Could you do a show about the 26 near earth objects ?
How many others here heard Desi Arnez from "I Love Lucy" yelling, "Loose-y, you got some 'splaining to do!" It was relieving that Neil brought up The Andromeda Strain, because my imagination started to go off on a tanget about alien microbes awakening on Earth and other horrors in science fiction movies.
Neil has made me a Chuck Nice fan. I want to hang out with him.
Thank for the heads up🐾
Osiris Rex - Sounds like an Egyptian King Dinosaur 😂
"SG 6, have you found Osiris Rex?"
I get why you'd think Egyptian King..but where did you come up with dinosaur?
@@vapandrei T-“Rex”is a Dinosaur
@@scottewen2522 Already knew your answer, so sorry for the setup. Rex means King, Osiris evokes Egyptian.. so where is the tyrannosaur in that acronym?
5:30 Not so sure why he was so taken aback by the "changing the name just due to where it's located". C'mon Neil! Meteoroid, meteor, and meteorite are all the same exact rock, just with a different name depending on where it is. (As he later referenced.)
If the sun don't clean the dust , that Tide will.
Nice spot Chuck
5:15 Every fifth grader in chat be lie
MAGMA IS UNDER GROUND
Love the video! But a bit scared on the safety part (space bugs?!) XD but yeah what could possibly go wrong right lol?
Great sound quality
You know Neil said that about Aliens with a double meaning 😉
Facts
"And blow it a raspberry!" She one-uped Chucks beauty. I like her.
Just what I needed today!
Interesting chemistry... We should digitize its form and make various models and programming based on it.
Another amazing video. Maybe it's because it's late, but does she keep saying "Yo"? 😂 I thought it might be "ya know" but she says that clearly at other times 😁👍 Can't wait for the samples to return!!
So if you bring a piece of a meteor to the earth, does it become a meteorite?
it’s a meteor-of-course.
It will be in a capsule so it won't actually contact the surface of Earth. Unless someone drops it.
I guess I should have said "If you bring a piece of asteroid to the earth, does it become a meteor and then a meteorite?"
@@JimFortune I never though of that....
@@elcidgaming I don't think they took that into consideration when they came up with the words.
i think it has been posted in the news that NASA has touched down. great work, NASA!
I just saw Chuck in the commercial he couldn't talk about!!! It was a Tide pods commercial. lol
It's funny to hear Neil amazement about magma-lava naming convention while having like 10+ names for a rock traveling through space ;)
Tefra is the Greek word for ash.
*You should get Elon on the show*
Man I was waiting for this !
Looking forward the day we ride the asteroid outside of our galaxy and wait to return years later. Fascinating 🤨
9:47 Chuck, you naughty boy! 😂😂
yeah. and they will be blowing its raspberry 😆
Dr. Tyson,
Is it possible that the “fabric of space” is a superconducting superfluid? It would explain gravity as the fluid surrounds and repels the charged matter from all sides, and would explain why space is virtually frictionless. I’ve never heard of this hypothesis and I’m wondering if it is scientifically feasible.
Love the content!
Gotta ask the question:
you guys bringing back any viruses in that package?
hey, if you gonna tap that asteroid, you gotta protect yourself ... just sayin'
Though a non sequitur, I love the two pieces of art. Seems like totemic black and white swans.
Oh, it's going to be from near the surface, exposed to the vacuum of space and solar radiation. Ahh, I see, I see. So what you're saying is... ALIEN TARDIGRADE INVASION INCOMING!!!
Ahahahah i was thinking that too im like weell its not a garentie is it guys
"What about safety"
her: 👁👄👁
this is such an incredible mission
I love how serious Lucy got when Chuck asked. So, your hoping the Sun will do your job for you? Her jovial demeanor went right out the window! lol
Dr. Tyson Thank You!!
Last time I was this early the solar system was still forming
Last time I downvoted an “early” comment this quick was.....about 3 minutes ago.
Thanks for giving 🙏🇩🇰👍
Did I hear correctly? Some meteorites are ”igneous?. So they came from a volcano... From another planet?
Well technically yes but no. You see these asteroids have been around for millions or billions of years. So these are basically results of large collisions that happened in times when the earth or mars was being formed. These rocks must have been part of the molten earth that were thrown into orbit and have stayed there.
The reason that these would not be outputs of actual volcanoes would be because they would require a tremendous amount of energy to escape a planets pull which generally volcanic eruptions do not provide.
I feel like this is the start of a Spider-Man origin movie
More like Venom
everybody knows you don't drink Pebbles from a glass, you EAT Pebbles from a bowl!!
Yo!! 😊🤙
What I heard was, "anything that has managed to survive the environment of the surface of the asteroid deserves to infect the planet" 8D
Do they make acronyms first or the shortforms first..i really doubt it
"Safety flashbacks"
Scientist: So, we are building this new ship to collect the asteroid sample? It looks like only the skeleton is completed
NASA Boss: skele...yes, why dont we name it The Skeld
Scientist: where would we temporarily store the asteroid sample before redistribution, Sir?
NASA Boss: we will temporary set up Mira HQ nearby dropzone
Neil: Have you guys thought about safety?
Lucy: Nothing can survive under all the space radiation. (Geez... its not as if we are gonna to unleash some alien imposter race that can mimic humans n bring them back to Earth, but now that Neil mentioned it, shall i call an emergency meeting? NAY)
Chuck is definitely high...just thought y'all needed to know
