This is above 12 inch so no longer a true bookshelf. Under 12 inch, it could have been a competitor for LS50. At 2K USD, you will have to cross shop agains other bigger counterparts like R3 where this is going to loose both in the look and sound department. The 'bracing' inside kinda reminds me of Bose waveguide which lends a horn like effect to the sound which is good for acoustic heavy music.

@@jonathanreich6360 These reviews (reviews from others as well) I feel "really" appeal to those who love analyzing "the equipment side", followed then by those who might be looking to buy (which can be helpful in their decision). At 72 years old I've "finally" realized that the "grass is typically not greener on the other side", and from a cost basis standpoint, "apples to apples" chasing equipment often just provides a different, equally good change Horizontal, but not a big change Virtically. Bottom line, if you are happy with your system, save your money and enjoy the MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a pair of speakers that were very similar, about 15 to 20 years ago using the Jordan JX92S 4 inch full range driver. They were made by Ronnie Thackerey who had a small company called Carolina Audio. The bookshelf model looked a lot like this one with a folded transmission line and there was a floor standing as well. To me they sounded like a pair of Quad electrostatics but with better dynamics, sound staging and, bass. The driver's on these ones look amazing and I hope I get a chance to hear them someday.
What I did to solve the lazar problem on the highs with FR drivers: I mounded the FR driver at a 30 degree angle on top of the box. Built a cover with a wood top and black mesh sides (with an omny deflector cone inside). I plan to make a few like that. They are semi omni, just a bit brighter in front but no lazar stuff, just gentle pregressive roll off in the highs as you increase angle. But even from 90 degrees it's still only 10% less highs. Easy to still enjoy. And as you walk around the room there is barely much difference in highs. It's not for the faint hearted but if you are handy with wood, it's about the only real solution to the super directional highs. Better than any conventional speaker for highs spread!
Something for me to consider. I'm currently shopping for a whole new system. SS or Tube, mono or stereo, integrated or stand alone, bookshelf's or floor? Decisions decisions, but the information gathering is actually a nice voyage. Too many times in the past I've bought on impulse and regretted it. This time around I'm aiming for high-end but simple and not ultra expensive. I want to get great value for my money. These speakers are interesting and with a quality sub might be the ticket with something like a Zen TORII JR.
I believe the midrange clarity of a transmission line speaker - is partly due to the low(er) back pressure inside the cabinet. Since it is open, the driver is, I think, able to be more like an open baffle speaker.
@@Jayiyagi - right - a transmission line is the best bass solution, in my opinion. Because a TL gets so much bass out of a given driver, the quality of the bass is better - the lower mass of the driver, and the control of the TL, end up having (much?) lower distortion bass. *And* you get the excellent midrange from it.
Hi Neil, I understand you are professional designer I think your work was promoted on Sonora Design YT channel. What do you think of the narrow throat at the bottom end of that TL tube? I favour an ever widening tapered TL with more of a horn at the outlet? A la Voigt pipe. In my view they will muffle the backwave. Also the lack of taper promotes a limited range of frequency of the backwave.

Hi Jay, this is very interesting. I've been researching other speakers to replace my LS50 metas. I like them a lot, but I know there's more and better! I recently watched your review of the Totem Tribe Towers. I know, a different price category. But putting the price aside, how much better the TTTs are than the metas? Your input will be very appreciated!
I have some 3" coaxial speakers with tiny middle tweeters. Just a cap on tweeter. With a BSC filter they sound quite good, especially since they cost me only a small amount.
Hi Jay,would like to know little bit more in how do they compare to the moon mini,as they are both similar in price and would fit great in a small room. Cheers and thanks for the all work you’ve done here👌🤝
Besides the look, what is the advantage of these co km pared to a Kali IN-8 and woofer setup for even less money? More SPL, extension is both directions, more advanced port end, no worries about subtractive crossovers. Sensitivity doesn't make anything more dynamic, and power is cheap... Plus most music only has 15dB of dynamic range on average anyhow.
Jays thanks for your information, I always enjoy it, a lot. I'm just starting out with audiphilia, I recently bought the meta LS50. In the store they sounded amazing, but in my apartment... hmm I feel like they are not working at 100% capacity. I think it may be my amplifier (Marantz PM7000N) Very good in the middle, but in the high and low frequencies, frankly light. I know you've had the LS50 Meta for a long time. In your experience with which amplifier did you have the best experience?
It’s a tough question because these speakers are subjectively very different. OGY are very analytical and light on bass. They’re perfect for soft acoustic music with vocals. The KLH should sound warmer with bigger bass. The KLH are better for rock music and parties. I imagine that a lot of people would like the KLH more on bass alone. That’s like the #1 criteria for regular people. And the OGY expose bad recordings instantly because they’re so infuriatingly transparent.
I'm looking at the paradigm founder 120h or the Dynaudio confidence 30 (used demo) wich would you recommend the Dynaudio would cost 8000 $ more... thanks
Can these also be used as centre speaker along side left and and right LS 50 Meta’s and would you recommend that or would you recommend another centre that could go well with L/R LS 50 Meta. My other option is the Dali Opticon 2 stand mount and Dali Opticon Vocal Centre. Many thanks.
❤️Hello Jay hope you’re doing well. Are these better than the dali minuet se❤️ In creating a three-dimensional holographic image with a strong center focused image
Dali Menuet SE while high resolution was dark sounding, albeit holographic, good note weight, attack and smooth. Also a pig for power and heats up amps more than it should due to low dip to 3.5 ohms over a good part of lower mids. Move past 5 feet from the center plane of the speakers and you lose much of the charm it had nearfield. The Dali Opticon 1 MK1 gives up some resolution but retains more transparency and the ability to listen from further away. Also does well with movies while the Se did not. Also goes no lower than 4 ohms and my smaller amp doesn't have any heat issues. About 4 dB louder with same power output from amp. IMO and personal experience. Used both a Keces E40 and a Hegel h160 on both speakers. The Menuet sounded about the same, the Opticon sounds more lively on the Hegel but sounds great with either amp.
Hey! That’s overkill. You’ll blow your ears at 30% volume. I swear I have to lower the volume to 10% on my DAC and my Creek 4240 40W amp is at 50% volume. You can even power the OGY with a measly 10W of class D power (Tripath TA2024). But I don’t recommend it, the highs will be fatiguing and the bass will be light. I definitely recommend a warm and smooth amp.
Maximum respect for anyone's opinion in Naples they say "Ogni Scarrafone e bello a Mamma Suia". The BBC3/5 in the various versions produced have been on the market for many years and evidently their sound has become tired, but it seems to me that we are returning to the phonovalige . ... moreover there are beautiful versions of the Diatone and Goto one-way in Japan that no one is looking for, but they are much better ............ although personally I can't stand them for more than 10 minutes ..... If I want to hear with a one-way I use a dipole with Altec 420 driven with a single ended 845 and so much for your shoeboxes
Those Arendal subs are no joke, I wonder how they compare to the new Rsl speedwoofer 12? I have the 1961 1v and the 1961 bookshelves and I couldn't be happier(or could I?). Recently I've had my eyes on a pair of supermons but these Ogys are definitely on my list of must-haves.
I'm sure it'll be the equivalent of the 1961 1v. They're roughly the same size, same power, and both extend to 16hz. I thought about getting one, but having the Arendal, I just couldn't justify the purchase.
Jay I am big fan of fullrange drivers. Question for you. On a strickly "tonality" and presentation of the music using say the Vincent Audio SV-237 integrated. Would choose the OGY and subwoofer or Polk R700? Thanks for all your help in advance.
@@Jayiyagi outstanding Jay thank you for your prompt reply!! sorry for all the questions, but here the big one! Same question as above purely tonality; OGY and Subwoofer or Arendel 1723.
pretty hard choice. Depends on what you want. Arendal 1723 thx is going to give you a fullrange-ish response right off the bat without a sub. More impactful air movement and mid bass punch. Highs are going up to be sparkly but not as forward or distinctive as the OGY but it will be a more warmer meatier type of midrange in comparison. OGY is going to give you more pin point accuracy in imaging and wider/deeper soundstage. Very clear sounding like a panel speaker. Bass is going to be a lot more dependent on what sub you go with and how you set it up
@@Jayiyagi Oustanding Jay very detailed and useful information. The OGY is just so appealing as I have worked wideband and/or fullrange drives in-depth and what you said about eq is spot on. I found them very easy to eq less fuss with crossover distortion and phase issues. Hmmmmm to be honest The your project with CSS is at the top of my list.
@Jayiyagi Hope you are doing wonderful. Last year I got the AGD Audions after listening to your recommendation and last week I got the OGY. I already own a pair of Zu Audio Undertone 3 subs and believe me this combo is phenomenal. I believe I have found my end-game setup. Thanks to you!!
@@Jayiyagi It is actually correct, I do have the Focal's Utopia 3's and they have no crossovers, Maybe others do, but I was in their factory in France and they stated no crossovers to me on the speaker I purchased. I also own the Arendals 1723 THX that I purchased because of your review, and the Aida from Sonus Faber. Will call them. Et oui, je parle Francais.
I am not sure why they told you that at the factory. But from my understanding, the Focal Utopia 3 used OPC crossover where you can adjust the different frequencies to the room acoustics. It should be in your manual for the Focal Utopia 3. Unless we are talking about two different speakers, I am pretty sure...
Thumbs up and shout out to team full range! I built the Pensil 7ms DIY speakers recently (ms=mono suspension, special driver technology now copied by B&W). Was only GBP 200 for drivers and CNC cut wood. I have the same super deep and wide soundstage. Only one problem occurs with one Santana live recording where the very left congas on the track always play in my neighbour's living room (so wide & spacious is the soundstage). He can get quite annoyed at times about that...
Nice review - I figure, for my case, I'd have these for some 'mood 'listening. .. like a side system that does some music really well. .. I mean, .. after all .. I don't own only 1 pair of shoes either. =)
Very cool speakers. Kinda where im headed in terms of designs. I feel like they float the image in a beutiful way with these designs. Im going with a aperiodic transmision line design and a 8" drive with supertweeters. Should yeild a low 30's -30 frequency response. Ive had my eye on this company for a while too.
Jay it would be helpful if you provided a single frequency response measurement. With this speaker I would like to see how the lack of baffle step correction results in a rising response…I have never seen a single driver speaker without filtering not have this issue.
planning on doing that in the near future. Meanwhile they do have frequency response that is pretty impressive, you can contact them for it yourself but I almost measured these myself and got similar results
Adding a sub-woofer rubbishes the transmission line principle of the design. If a sub-woofer is necessary Ogy might as well house the same driver in a smaller cabinet such as the Neat Iota.
Crossovers do not shape the tone of a speaker/driver. The only thing a corssover can do is limit what frequencys are allowed to pass to each driver in a multi-driver system. The tone of a speaker is determined by it's design and the baffle it is installed in.
$500-600 using these drivers and cabinet construction will get them bankrupt, can't even get to the price your asking even for DIY projects unless you go with a much lesser single driver. Drivers are EMS LB5 and costs that much on their own. The transmission cabinet in birch plywood aside from R&D cost makes the price pretty reasonable.
@@Jayiyagi The drivers are under $400 a pair retail. When you buy wholesale lot more discount. I understand, these are low volume sales. Just thinking out loud how things are priced in the audiophile world.
@@Jayiyagi One more thing. SIERRA-2EX V2 PAIR with Raal Ribbon Tweeter and Seas Woofer and higher grade crossover and bamboo cabinets is selling for $1600+ USD. Also these are assembled in the USA.
@@leo11877 $400 is a pretty expensive driver. Building a transmission line cabinet that would work well with this driver took the company 3 years according to them, many iterations. Again, anyone is welcome to just buy the driver (they sell just the driver as well) and try to diy for less but this is a product where that work has been done for you. Price justification is always a challenge for products like this since all people see is a single driver thrown into a small cabinet.
@@Jayiyagi dunno, I guess camera angle deceived me, looked like something was "off". I got used to it when you watch directly into the camera that is recording you.
@Jayiyagi, you should try a Bose 901 Series VI (the made in Canada versions) paired with modern audiophile electronics. Incredible bass from the 14” equivalent surface area and benefit of crossoverless design, albeit with the outboard EQ. Main problem was that Bose always sold these with poor electronics or in showrooms with poor placement. The Canadian ones seem to be the best (there are made in USA and made in Mexico vintages of the Series 6)

I would love to hear your review of the OGY speakers paired with their B.O.B. base speakers. I hear they're fantastic!
They’re great for jazz, folk, classical -anything acoustic. Anything high energy like rock/r&B/edm/etc and they’re underwhelming.
@@AdamsOlympia Even with a sub?
I've only had cheap coaxial speakers, but the beaming drove me to drink ;)
Haha ;)
That is a beautiful little speaker
Nice 1500 there. I love them! ❤️☺️ There's a German company that makes lovely adonized reels.
Where is Two Gents? I haven't seen Him in quite some time.
When you said no crossover or filter, Danny popped in my head. Oh my he would have a field day with parts for this beautiful speaker!! LOL

Thought Jay sold the Kef LS50 for the Wireless version ?
Jay in your opinion if you could choose would you pick KLH model5 or these OGY?
It’s a tough question because these speakers are subjectively very different. OGY are very analytical and light on bass. They’re perfect for soft acoustic music with vocals. The KLH should sound warmer with bigger bass. The KLH are better for rock music and parties. I imagine that a lot of people would like the KLH more on bass alone. That’s like the #1 criteria for regular people. And the OGY expose bad recordings instantly because they’re so infuriatingly transparent.
I'd be curious as to how they sound with Thomas's Amp in Class A at 10 watts.
So, did you end up selling the KEF LS50 Metas and keeping the Ogy's or are you going to keep them both? 🙂
These speakers look happy
Like father of Hi-end British, the Lowther !
Simple no cross-over
Dungeon type reflex system.
You should check japanese Coral full range drivers 🤔🇫🇮
❤️Hello Jay hope you’re doing well. Are these better than the
dali minuet se❤️
In creating a three-dimensional holographic image with a strong center focused image
Personally I feel that these are better in that regard and more pure sounding
This was great . Look to see u in Florida. Ill check out your patreon account
Can a Sugden A48 power a set of these? My Dittons apparently will be in yhe shop for a longer than originally planned. 40w of Old English Solid State
I'm pretty sure 40W is enough to reach the limits of a 4" full range driver
Why don’t you have a Tandberg TD20A SE half track 7.5/15 ?
That's the coolest phaseplug I've ever seen, is that a transmission line ? Seen the deeper ported cabinet?
You should review CUBE AUDIO from Poland too
Jay, you have to try the new decware T6, sound great on ss. On tubes, I'll save all the audiophile catch words but , OMG!!!!!
Not sure about the RSL. Was going to get them in but RSL was still figuring out shipping when I last talked to them
I'm sure it'll be the equivalent of the 1961 1v. They're roughly the same size, same power, and both extend to 16hz. I thought about getting one, but having the Arendal, I just couldn't justify the purchase.
Business as usual! So how many speakers do you own and use? Freebies?
Jay I am big fan of fullrange drivers. Question for you. On a strickly "tonality" and presentation of the music using say the Vincent Audio SV-237 integrated. Would choose the OGY and subwoofer or Polk R700? Thanks for all your help in advance.
Tonality alone I’d hands down choose the OGY even without a subwoofer…
Dubious specs. IMD measurements?
Focal does not use Crossovers, each driver is build specifically for their own tonality.
I don't think that's factually correct. Focal does use crossovers and you can confirm that with a quick check on their website.
@@Jayiyagi I am sure you know better, maybe is my mistake>
I am not sure why they told you that at the factory. But from my understanding, the Focal Utopia 3 used OPC crossover where you can adjust the different frequencies to the room acoustics. It should be in your manual for the Focal Utopia 3. Unless we are talking about two different speakers, I am pretty sure...
@@Jayiyagi Thank you learn something new :) And you are correct.
Jay, as you continue your journey, how about the Dutch & Dutch 8c?
sounds good! I'll look into it. thanks for the suggestion
@@Jayiyagi Good deal, look forward to your thoughts down the road.
That one-eyed speaker is smiling at me.
Is it in the same price point as the KEF?
Approximately
Hey Jay, are you coming out to The Lonestar Audio fest?
Unfortunately no :(
Thumbs up and shout out to team full range!
No US distributor?
Jay it would be helpful if you provided a single frequency response measurement. With this speaker I would like to see how the lack of baffle step correction results in a rising response…I have never seen a single driver speaker without filtering not have this issue.
planning on doing that in the near future. Meanwhile they do have frequency response that is pretty impressive, you can contact them for it yourself but I almost measured these myself and got similar results
@@Jayiyagi awesome. My only request is that you don’t overly smooth the results like Robinson does. I think he uses 1/3rd smoothing. I like 1/6th
They look like the slot machine from the TWILIGHT ZONE.😂
Greetings from Poland. This Boyuurange is very beautiful.
Please tell us how much they cost. I can't find the price anywhere!
I show it in the video but it is also available on the first link in the descriptions and pinned comment.
Excessively wide soundstage = poor imaging? Similar to Philharmonic BMR Monitors.
Love Boonzi trees, my dad keeps sending them and I keep killing them🤦
The OGY seems supercool BUT the smiley face on front would drive me up the wall.
You think we should make a version without a smile ? :)
@@closeracoustics6154yes please 🙏
The Angry Ogy version perhaps?
What's ya going to do with those tiny drivers?
I don't get it? 🤷🏻♂️
he's planning on playing music
If they are small and only one driver and no crossover parts why are they still $2000? Should be around $500-600 range ;)
There is always a quadruple upmark on speakers like this. Nothing new
@@leo11877 $400 is a pretty expensive driver.
If the cabinet was yellow, it would look more like the single-goggled minion from the Rise of Gru than it already resembles
Lovely PS Vane Tubes
Have the feeling something happened to your autocue, or script itself.
What do you mean?
@@Jayiyagi dunno, I guess camera angle deceived me, looked like something was "off". I got used to it when you watch directly into the camera that is recording you.
Looks like the speaker is going to say..Bananaaaa ..
I heard ls50s and went is that it? Thats what everyones buying???
It’s actually a pretty well designed speaker. Whether it is your taste is a different matter
well what are you buying asshole?
Well, while I typically like to use a grill...there is no tweeter to entice people to poke at.
Which sub could these be paired with ???
The company recommended the Rel T5x to me.
Nice speakers
@Jayiyagi, you should try a Bose 901 Series VI (the made in Canada versions) paired with modern audiophile electronics. Incredible bass from the 14” equivalent surface area and benefit of crossoverless design, albeit with the outboard EQ. Main problem was that Bose always sold these with poor electronics or in showrooms with poor placement.
The Canadian ones seem to be the best (there are made in USA and made in Mexico vintages of the Series 6)
OGY reminds me of the LGK's.
I loved my Kef LS50 but single driver speakers just can’t give me the dynamics I’m looking for in my music.
Is it just me, or do they look like a Minion?
It’s not just you. If it was yellow… it’s almost perfect
I’m just calling them OG as the y is silent
LOL LS50 overhyped.
Paint them in yellow and they'll look like a minion.
