You can…it’s not the lifestyle most want to live. SSI National average is around 1800…your budget should be 1500-2500. This is fairly realistic for Expats. You want a community with guards, gardeners, a home with AC, and WiFi…, guys the minimum wage in the Philippines is between 350-500usd per month. Living on that means making choices that is difficult for most. Even 800-1k is difficult…
I strongly recommend an emergency fund with 5-10K usd that is not touched. Emergency plane ticket out of the Philippines…Emergency Medical…. Lots of reasons. Keep this in a US account. Limit the funds you have in county to 1500-3000 at a time.
You should be debt free in the US before going to the Philippines. Do not buy a bunch of stuff you don’t need. We are not in the county to show off.
Do not, I repeat, go to the Philippines broke…the Philippines is not your golden ticket out of poor financial decisions in the West.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting living in the Philippines is a golden ticket, but if disciplined you can improve your quality of life and spend much less than in the US. I know, we are doing it. The numbers you quote are great goals but in the US it took all my salary just to live, let alone save. Here my small SSI is enough for us to live and save some. You are also correct to say do not come here if you are broke, or with debt, there is no safety net here and no money can mean you will starve. Thanks for your comment and view.

@@phbornusnaturalized2342 People need to start 10 or more years planning for their move overseas…not just retirement which should start much earlier. Figure out where, how you want to live…it seems like a lot of guys it’s knee jerk. The emergency fund isn’t a goal, it’s a must have. There have been revolutions peoples power, martial law, more than a dozen attempted military coups, Islamic uprisings, communist rebels and a heck of a lot of natural disasters in the last 40 years. You should be in a position to abandon your Philippines dream and head back to the US at anytime. The tides of change can occur quickly in the country. I love the Philippines…I also know it’s history better than most expats. History repeats itself and I don’t want to be active participant…I want a fresh coconut and a clean beach to lay on…know when to pop smoke is all I am saying.

I was talking with Jes, and we agree we would still consider being here as apposed to there, because both of us would have to work there just to live. That’s not to say your points are not valid, they are, just not always attainable for everyone. But here we can enjoy retirement with no ordinary stress. The bottom could fall out for all those things you said.. But it might not just be local so even the US might not be a safe harbor. We can get back if the planes fly, but not planning on it for now. Thanks

@@phbornusnaturalized2342 Comparable housing , food , electric , gasoline , etc is more expensive in Philippines than the US. The only thing cheaper in the Philippines….apples to apples is labor , car insurance , some clothes , and have a girl friend . Yeah you can get cheaper rent but it’s not comparable to what you would get in the US. And maybe some local food is cheaper but many vegetables are more expensive in the Philippines than the US. Oh I forgot public transport is cheaper in Philippines

    • @phbornusnaturalized2342
      @phbornusnaturalized2342  Місяць тому +1

Well we are living cheaper here, able to save and then travel. Give to others who have needs. I don’t need girls I have a wife. Free to eat out, move about with public transport. I could not live on this level on my SSI only in the US, without supplementing with work. I like not reporting to work daily. I’m not so sure why you doubt what we say, we are here doing this. Yes we spend more than 800.00 a month but if you watch the video we make that clear. 800.00 is very basic and we can do that but we are fortunate to have more than that to work with. Thank you for your comments but not everyone has to live the same way or in the same place.

I'm sure the best thing about living in the philippines is finding a beautiful loving wife like yours to spend your life with.
But I think you should have enough income that you can save a little money each month for those surprise issues. You may have to pick your location to fit your budget so you can.
You are bound to live better there than you can in the US on a low income. But I think $1500 would be a safer bet for a "comfortable" living there.

Good inputs but low budget is only applicable to provinces in Philippines. Cheap to live in provinces but most provinces don’t have a good healthcare or hospitals are far or road are really bad or high risk of flood or low supply chain. If you live in city it will be 3 times of $800 or probably more per month if you are used to American Lifestyle. No traffic in provinces because its less people not much businesses. It might be cheap for daily
Living but healthcare will be more costly. I agree if you live in province you can save more and have more travel budget. Keep good savings for healthcare and for emergency situations.

Thanks for proving the $800 per month naysayers wrong. Of course, not too many Expats coming to the Philippines will have the luxury of having an already paid for home to move into upon arriving here. Thanks to the advance planning of your gwapa kaayo, genius, asawa - Mark. That shows that it really pays to marry an OFW worker. They are the cream of the crop as far I'm as I'm concerned. In my humble opinion, they are naturally very bright, loving, caring and patient people. Jes and my Sheena are good examples of that. By the way, Sheena saves us money by buying our clothes at okay okay stores. I'm not a fashion guru I don't dress to make fashion statement. As long as it fits, it's fine for me. Tip of the day: okay okay (a secondhand store) pronounced: oak eye oak eye.. File that in your memory bank, amigo.
Salamat for sharing. Both of you take good care. Keep on keeping on with the good work.
Thank you for sharing your very informative and educational videos.

I think i could live there on 800 a month. I built a ok block house for my mom in law. We lost her last year so the lot under the house was transferred to my wife. We didn't want my father in law have problems with his wifes brothers and sisters. So we have a place to live when I retire. But living in the province can be boring. I guess I would have to get some hobbies. 800 a month would be a simple life but if you get used to it that is ok.

Does that include decent insurance if something happens? I always advise a minimum budget of 120K PHP to cover insurance, traveling, nice food, and savings for two people. Add on a bit for each kid. It is not smart to go with that low budget. It is actually a dangerous advice. Doable? Yes... Should you? Absolutely not!

An interesting way of looking at cost of living over there. For 2. -- I'm alone and intend to remain that way. Quite content as is. -- Should allow for a realistic budget - given I don't cook much ? - - - I likely will add to this for visa costs and transportation and any other..... to - $1000. - - - A monthly savings of about $500 out of my SS would then be possible for any emergencies or accidents or travel or....... ?

You can live in PH for $200/mo if you want. Millions of Filipinos do it. I know many people love these "Live on $nnn per month" videos and I did too when first interested in moving to SE Asia. But after awhile I realized they were all nonsense. If you have an income of $1374/mo and no savings then you will spend $1374/mo. Your entire adult life was paycheck to paycheck. There's nothing magical about PH that will turn you into a financial wizard.
How these videos work is they skip a bunch of expenses like visas and "unexpected" things which happen nearly every month so they should be expected.
It's the same with food. "Look how amazingly cheap these bananas are!!!!" But I can buy better bananas here in Phoenix for the same price. Eggs, cheaper in Phoenix. Expat Tubers just say things are cheaper but never do any kind of comparison. Another fav is comparing a $200/mo "apartment" that's nasty looking, bugs and lizards out in the sticks to a condo in some major US city.
It's delusional, but delusional sells on social media so enjoy.

Mr. Water Bug. Not everyone can live anywhere on the surface of any source of water. Most of us do need basic necessities. For these basic necessities we spent 70.00 US Dollars than budgeted last month. We specify that this budget is bare and we spend more than this, on our wants, not necessities. This video gives those who are interested a starting point. We have featured several rentals that are more and less than the 10000 we use, none of them are low grade living spaces.
