Hello Bridget! People are really thinking that the consistency would be a nightmare if they rolled down. Likely very very true. So they make it impossible to roll down and slightly tough to roll up too easily. Saves everyone aggravation. Likely a sound theory!
They don't roll back down because they are so soft, so they would break if you rolled them up too far! The softness is what allows them to melt on the lips.
I have the Mario Lip Serum and I love it. I always wanted the Em Cosmetics Lip Cushion but very difficult to get a hold of in Australia. But the Mario one is sold at Sephora Australia, and it has more product and less expensive (than the Charlotte Tilbury one too)
Interesting that Hourglass has revealed a product like this as well! Makes me wonder if perhaps many brands were waiting for mask restrictions to ease before releasing these shiny, lower wear time lip products. Absolutely. They’d make a giant mess if they rolled up more easily and went back down. It’s true. They barely work in a bullet as is. So true. Makes total sense. Yes. I’m wondering if they were waiting for mask mandates to lift too. I bet they were!

It really is beautiful and tempting but I just picked up the Merit lightweight lipstick in Cabo/Tower lip gloss in pistachio. I can’t justify another lip product when I have so many in my makeup collection. However I’m glad that you got it because it’s very flattering and it’ll be perfect for the spring/summer seasons.
Totally agreed. We can’t get through the products we already have, even the new ones, let alone more new ones!!!

I won't be picking these up, however, I did pick up two of the new TF lippies from his summer 2022 collection and they are beautiful. Getting them on sale is also a great thing as they are quite pricey especially in Canada...we pay more for everything. J. 🙂

How would you rank these compared to the Mario lip serum and Charlotte Tilbury hyaluronic happykiss? I own both of those and wonder if this is worth getting
Hello Mary! The Mario is the thickst and, for lack of a better word, goopiest. The Charlotte is the thinnest. This one is right in the middle. I can’t remember the price of the Charlotte but, it’s an educated guess that the hourglass version is the most expensive. This one is kind of that in between. It doesn’t stay on very long but neither do the other two. This one has the whole hourglass experience with the long golden container. If you have Charlotte and Mario already, as you note, you would really only need the hourglass if there is a particular shade that strikes your fancy. Or if you are an extreme Hourglass fan.
I did almost get one of these the other day but didn't. It looks so good on u tho so...? Omg that would be great if they showed up on Sephora in the next two days. ❤️

Great question! These are a bit more serum like than the Dior. The Dior is more of a shining lipstick. The HG is more like a tinted serum. Super super happy to compare side by side on Insta for you. Just let me know your screen name so I can tag you.
I am curious about this but I have to also share my latest discovery from the Sephora sale. I bought the Sephora Glossed Lip Gloss in Blessed. It was 7$ during the sale and 10$ regularly. The formula could be a dupe for Rare Beauty. Really good find at a great price! (not that I needed another lip product 🙄)
Hello Mary! I gotta tell you, I have found some of my best beauty buys just shopping the Sephora brand. For instance, they have an airbrush foundation that is a dupe for the Dior air flash foundation. A lot of their lip and eye products are fantastic and made by the same companies that make for the bigger brands.
Today I bought my first Hourglass lip gloss. It’s beautiful and has a slight cooling effect. Is it worth $32? Probably not but it’s Hourglass and I got 20% off. I will look at these when they come to Sephora.

I wonder if they make the mechanism that way for those because the formula won’t stand up to being rolled up and down. It may be too soft.
That’s got to be it. The product can’t handle it and, to be honest, the consumer would just ring the product. So yes that’s the consensus and I believe it’s true.

Good morning, these look gorgeous on you, not sure if they are worth $35, even drugstore has similar products, we all know that Hourglass has quality products and packaging but I hate to pay this much money for a product that does not last on the lips. Hello Cornelia! There’s that slight tingle which would mean it’s plumping (???) but I feel like, in reality, it’s the shine that seems plumping rather than the tingle enlarging the lips.

I think the reason these don’t roll back down it to keep you from rolling them to far up because they are so soft. The new Tarte ones come to mind, even just with a couple of clicks I feel they want to mush around. Honestly its a formula that a little too soft for a bullet…
Very very perceptive! Yes, with the Mario product, I am still confused as to how they put it into a bullet. It feels to me like it should be in a tube that squeezes. So you make an interesting point. If they roll up too far they’re going to get all sorts of returns because the lipstick will just make a complete mess. So it’s not that the mechanism doesn’t allow a rollback it’s that they assume the customer will have too much trouble with the product if they roll it up too far. I think that is indeed the explanation and you are clearly a genius!🥰
OMG, you are so quick with these new launches. I often do not know a product is even launching when you review it🤣☺️ Very pretty but nothing new. Gosh, I hate the fact those types of lippies are not retractable! They are a pass for me but I did pick up a couple Merit lippies during the sale. I have a couple of the CT lippies that are similar to the Hourglass and I don’t dislike them but I don’t need anymore of them.
Hey Tracie!! Yes. Totally agree. They’re a little late to the market with these. We all have a lot of lip glosses. These new really shiny formulas are very interesting. I have no idea why none of them retract. Honestly. It’s like one of the wonders of the world. There’s no way this technology does not exist. At that price point? How strange.

It just seems their line is a one trick pony and when they come out with other products they are too late to the market and too expensive. Seriously, what were they thinking with the obscenely overpriced skin care line and eyeshadows???

I thought of BB and wondered if these would be her thing or not! She will enjoy that we think of her when goopy is mentioned! I have to tell you, I am truly baffled. You know that I think the labs run beauty. What I mean is that whatever innovation they are currently touting is what every brand ends up buying and selling to us. And, for some reason, these serum, super shiny lip products do not retract. None of them do. And I wonder why that is. They all make the silly click click sound and none of them go back down. I thought of Charlotte and Mario off the top of my head but I believe there are more. When it’s this particular formula, it does not retract. Why? What am I missing here?

I refuse to buy products that roll up but not back down lol 😆 I’m a massive cynic and I feel like brands are trying to trick me into rolling up too much product and then having to use it because it won’t roll back down thereby making me have to purchase their non rolling down product more often!!
I hear that entirely Johanna. The only thing I actually respect about this is that their website tells you straight up that it does not roll back down. For Charlotte and Mario we kind of had to find out the hard way. That being said, you make an excellent point. And let me add: why does it not retract? Why is that technology not available? So bizarre.

@@johannahoneyman697 The consensus in comments seems to be that these type of products are so serum-like that, if the consumer were to accidentally roll them up too high, they would never go back down cleanly and would, instead, just melt everywhere. With the Mario product in particular, I always wondered how and why it was even in a lipstick tube to begin with when it seemed it should be in some sort of a squeeze tube instead!
My dream is to find a glossy red lip product that doesn’t smear outside of my lips after wearing it through the day. I’m a redhead and I think reds color wise work well for me but I can never get them to stay put. I even have a hard time with mattes! I’m curious about this product though! 💄
You’ve got me thinking, Stephanie. I wonder if this would work for you. Because it does kind of stay put. You saw the photo of me wearing it after a few hours. Kind of left a bit of a stain but didn’t really smear outside of the lip line. I wonder how this would be in red for you. And unfortunately, darn it, I didn’t pick up one of the red shades for us to know a little more.

This is an interesting product especially if, like me, as you say, you prefer gloss to lipstick. This is pretty much a hybrid lipstick and lipgloss. It is not as good as Pat McGrath lip gloss, but what is? Nothing! But as far as a glossy, balm like lipgloss/lipstick, this one is very good and I think you might enjoy it if you try it. And hourglass makes a very good product even though it is pricey.

The shine is divine. The colors you chose are divine. The clickity clickity not so much, BUT I was thinking about it. At first I thought: what the heck, man, if you are going to have such a cheap component, then charge less $$. But now I am thinking that it’s not so much a question of “cheapness,” but a question of the consistency of the product?? Maybe?? What I mean is: the balm is SOOO emollient that it’s almost liquid. There is no way to put liquid back in a component like that. Once it’s out, it’s out. Does this make any sense at all????? 🤪🤪 Do I have the budget?? Yes; and HG is pricey. Do I have room in my makeup space?? How I can put this delicately?? No. Do I care?? Also no. I really want to try one of these liquid-y shiny shiny shiny shiny formulas!!!!! Not sure if I mentioned they look shiny. 🤩🤩🤩🤩💖

I think you’ve really hit on it. If the product gets rolled up too far, it’s molten and just goes everywhere. If it’s rolled back down, it’s a mess. Mess for the consumer. Mess for there brand in consumer complaints. Mess all around. Make it unable to retract and the issue is eliminated. Now the clickity click I have no explanation for. Haha.

Hey Veronica! They do look like mascara. I love how they call it phantom. Like it’s in a phantom like tube. It’s a phantom because you think it’s mascara! Ha ha. Yes. That seems to be the consensus. That if the consumer were to roll the product up too high the stuff would just go everywhere because it’s almost too soft for a bullet to begin with. So the consensus is that they could make it roll up and back down but it would just get to be an absolute mess for the consumer that way.

I will start by saying it is beautiful & it may have been something I would have considered BUT I refuse to purchase anything that doesn't retract. This is high end beauty so I feel they could have spent the extra 2 cents rather than making a product that ends up being wasted.
Once again it appears to be a beautiful formula & probably has benefits but they killed the deal with the delivery.
The consensus seems to be that, if it rolled up too far and retracted, it would just make a huge mess. The product is so shiny that it’s shocking it’s in a lipstick at all rather than a tube. That’s got to be the explanation.
Wanted to warn people that although the formulation is lovely I got to the bottom of mine VERY quickly. Not worth the money imo
