It's time for JR9's NXT Round up for a show that was somehow even worse than last week with only a single positive. Positives: Tony D retained the Heritage Cup in 6th round vs Nathan Frazer. The match did a good job showcasing both as their clash of styles worked well. Tony D especially is showing he can back up his brilliant character work in the ring & Frazer obviously very strong in the ring. Negatives: Tag turmoil started the show & it was the usual lame & redundant booking to crown #1 Contenders. New Catch Republic eliminated every team until Chase U entered where Ridge Holland would cheat & push Andre out the way of a Bate dive allowing Andre to capitalise & pin Bate via Crossbody. So once again Chase U cheats even though it makes no sense as just 3 mo the ago they kicked Jacy out for cheating but now Ridge has come & is doing the same & they are fine with it. It makes zero sense & is inconsistent writing which highlights HBK can't remember what he's booked in the past. Just awful plus even worse was the fact 3/5 teams in the turmoil were MR teams which illustrates just how bad the NXT division is at the moment. Wes Lee then beat Joe Goffey simplistically & Oba Femi appeared on platform & said he'd see him at Heatwave. Talk about pointless & still don't understand Wes getting another shot at the title when Oba literally beat him & Coffey at Battleground a month ago in Dominant fashion. Rok-C then beat Karmen Petrovic in a few mins via Pop rocks. Lola confronted her after the match & Rok-C tried to attack her again but Lola countered & took her down with a vicious back fist. Lola stole the title & took it Ava demanding a title match which was granted for Heatwave. Quite a few issues with this one putting Karmen in a match vs Rok-C instead of a Jobber was stupid & shows one of HBK's biggest issues. He uses the ladies more but their actual booking sucks for the most since outside of Rok-C everyone is basically 50-50 booked. Like they'll get a few wins but then lose so many more a month later, meaning they can't build proper momentum. It is also why Rok-C has basically no credibile challengers until Giulia arrives. Karmen just shouldn't have been in this match & should be being built up in separate matches where she wins. Also Lola vs Rok-C doesn't intrigue me due to it being Heel vs Heel & it just has 0 story either & there's only 1 week left so none can be made either. It does just feel like a filler match due to Giulia being unable to make it which looks to have been the original plan. They gotta get Giulia soon as they are running out of ideas with Rok-C's reign. Tavion Heights beat Damon Kemp to join No Quarter catch crew as if anyone cares, that group has 3 of the most uncharismatic talents I've ever seen just don't get why they continue to steal TV weekly it's so bad. Sol Ruca then beat Arianna Grace to become #1 Contender to Kelani at Heatwave in a horrendous match. Both put in terrible performances & Sol for the 1st time botched the Sol Snatcher & it looked awful as she had to bail to apron after going for it & did it like 10 seconds later. Just shocking & also got a big issue with Kelani vs Sol at Heatwave it's face vs face & how we got there made 0 sense. Since the only reason Sol got a title match is because Kelani asked Ava to defend against her as she never complains & is nice. Like honestly that makes a mockery of every other wrestler in the division since it's tells everyone that wins don't matter it's just if your a nice person. The Ladies North American title is pretty much a participation trophy at this point. Main Event saw Shawn Spears Pin your world champion in like 7 mins after Brooks Jensen who has a terrible gimmick of supposedly being fired & security keeps kicking him out each week whilst Vic never acknowledges who it is. Hit Trick with the hood of announce table like a cartoon leading to Spears win. This led to Ava making a fatal 4 way at Heatwave for the title Trick vs Je'von vs Spears vs Page. The way she explained why is horrendous as Je'von "won" the battle Royal last week throwing Spears out last but didn't really since Page wasn't eliminated, then Page beat Je'von in the main event last week but then Spears beat Je'von week before Battle royal & Trick last night. Talk about a convoluted way just to make a fatal 4 way & it still has no story either, plus you've just had your World Champ lose for no reason on a random Tuesday night. The Trick reign has sucked. Also this Brooks Jensen thing his to stop he's pretty just the wish version of Jack Perry's scapegoat gimmick. It feels way too similar but at the same time much worse. Brooks Jensen simply isn't interesting enough to do a story like this with. Just drop it already HBK. Overall: Another terrible NXT that was so boring & had nothing captivating outside of Tony D's Heritage Cup match. HBK is lost heading into Heatwave which has a dreadful card. Oba vs Wes North American title, Rok-C vs Lola women's title, Chase U vs Axiom/Frazer Tag titles, Kelani vs Sol North American Women's title & Trick vs Je'von vs Spears vs Page NXT title none of those matches are PPV worthy & none of them have an actual built story. This is the least interested I've been heading into a NXT PLE in a long time. Only hope is Giulia confronts Rok-C post match vs Lola. As if it doesn't happen can't see the show having any talking points & for a Toronto show that is unacceptable. HBK needs to actually put effort back into creating a product with storylines after Heatwave as this isn't it even with the better ratings. The Ladies especially need proper booking as right now it's has no structure & it kinda has felt that way since Mandy's reign ended. Just all over the place with inconsistent booking for most talents. HBK must do better as he's shown in the past he can book well but right now the shows are feeling that the stale Black & Gold ones that ultimately forced them into rebounding to 2.0 & that's not a good sign. Must get back on track ASAP.
