THE FIRST TWO TRAINS OF THE 2024 SEASON AT WASHFORD STATION WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY

- On a very cold and wet 23 March 2024. It was interesting to see what has been left at the station now that the S&D group have finally taken virtually all of their property to their new home. The WSR Heritage Trust has now purchased the Washford shed and the laid trackwork from them. It is intended to be a carriage restoration centre.
Nice one Mike. Good to see Washford Station getting attention. The WSR plc's PW Gang have done some 'spot sleepering' in the yard. The yard building is now occupied by the WSR Heritage Trust. The Signal Box has been receiving much needed urgent attention from the Company Carpenter; unfortunately there are great demands on his time so this will be a medium-term project.
*The Yard is out of bounds to the public*. When the S&D Trust occupied the site, the yard had vehicles in it (inc. The Signal you mentioned) these formed part of the S&D Museum Exhibition.
VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED - Please spread the word😃
Work began on Monday March 18 re-decorating the interior of Washford railway station. As a result, it was not possible to open the station building for the steam days on Saturday and Sunday March 23 and 24 (when this video was shot), although the volunteers did manage to spruce up the exterior (platform and lawns), and put up the newly refurbished running-in boards, despite the monsoon weather conditions throughout February. Washford is high up on the saddle between two valleys and is always rather bleak in poor weather. The painters and decorators are doing a great job and were desperately hoping to get everything done before Good Friday (the next steam day). Repair work has just begun on the little wooden signal box, hence the hole in the wall near the door. I suggest Mike comes back in April to video the brand new interior, all ready to celebrate this summer's 150th anniversary of the opening of the Watchet-to-Minehead extension.
Thanks for the update. I will be back!
Lovely to see you back at the railway again Mike. Very strange weather we seem to be having at the moment.
It sure is!
Mike, excellent "introductory" video showcasing excellent patronage on the first down later in the video, but prior to that, very poor numbers on the first up from Minehead.
I assume that March wouldn't exactly be seeing Butlins or other accommodation at Minehead anywhere near full, so Bishops Lydeard is the major passenger traffic generator.
Notwithstanding your comments about the S&D and Washford, the grass looked incredibly neat and 'English green' - the latter a colour we can't quite match in my distant abode.
I expect the bad weather put a lot of people off the idea on that first train.
Williton Station Carpark was full today (31/03/24), the trains also had reasonable loadings. Washford will never have a large foot fall, unlike Williton and Bishops Lydeard. for one thing there are limited parking facilities.
It is good to see the trains running. Thank you for your video Mike
Thank you Joanne. Good luck with your new phone.
Good shots of hail Mike! What atrocious weather! Someone has really spruced up Washford Station. It was looking so neat & tidy! And it had a pretty flower bed with dancing(in that wind) daffodils! When the sun shone it looked beautiful!
Welcome back. Great to see Admiral's corner back on the tracks although you kept us going over the winter with some tidbits. Looking forward to the new season. Hope you and Val are keeping well. As always many thanks.
We are enjoying doing what we can.
Good to see the WSR back in action and you as well Mike. I really appreciate all your videos, thank you. Washford looks nice and tidy.
Washford station looks dead and empty!!!
Hopefully things will improve there with time.@@TimHanney-to1su
@@TimHanney-to1su Perhaps you could put in few days as a volunteer. We are always looking for those people willing to help. Please contact Minehead Station.
A wonderful sound and sight for the ears and eyes. Very uplifting in this world of misery of late. The trains were full for the early start to the season Thanks for posting Mike
Yes it good to have some good news.
Great to see the trains running again Mike always miss them coming through Blue Anchor in the winter time. Hope you andVal post many more this year . Take care both of you
We certainly hope to!
Nice to see your videos returning for another season. We thoroughly enjoyed watching your exploits in Scotland and neighbouring islands ,Great to see you back, filming again, hope you're both well regards Gary and Julie
Sadly medical problems have stopped us from taking long journeys now.
I was at bishops Lydeard, lived to see the guest train there too
An interesting loco indeed!
Sad to see the decline of Washford and the lose of the Inn, use to be my favourite haunt on the line, the WSR really scored an home goal when they evicted the S&D trust.
It certainly seems an odd decision and sad that nobody it appears can make a success of running that inn.
that's rain? That is England you are filming from. Hope you and Val are well. Mans body needs attention and going under knife in about 3 months. Luckily no cancer
We hope all goes well.
The sunshine emerged for you to see the two steam engines. I haven't got much longer to wait for a certain Dapol Manor model to be delivered. You won't ever see the real 7822 again, but I have a new themed video with a GWR Manor twist to it in the wings: Manor on Monday: Mind your Manors. I've already created the trailer video, which will be uploaded Monday (beginning of next week). 7819 Hinton Manor is the engine in the trailer, but a certain sister of hers will steal the spotlight, just after Easter, all being well. You know who 7822 is, don't you?
Oh Yes!
Hi Mike, I was hoping to see you & Val at Williton this morning!... I took the Drone specifically to get the 2 Trains coming in at the same time, but the Weather put paid to that!, so ended up with some Handheld stuff instead. I'll probably try again tomorrow, though it's still going to be Windy. Here's a link to my UA-cam video at Williton & Minehead this morning... ua-cam.com/video/Sf6EcBbu8ng/v-deo.html
Good to see Percy. A lot will depend on the weather tomorrow, If I go out and video more.
I hoped the somerset and Dorset Trust would've ripped up the track and demolished the engine shed why should the west somerset railway benefit from the hard work of the SDRT you mentioned volunteers were needed to run the station but they had volunteers SDRT volunteers but the WSR threw them out. I will never visit the WSR again,
I think you need to get your facts correct.
As for the shed and track, it has been purchased for the WSR
I know it was purchased by the WSR!!! Run a railway? Those people responsible for kicking the SDRT out couldn't run a bath. Fact!!!!!
Yes l know track etc has been purchased by the WSR!!! Run a railway? Those responsible for kicking the SDRT out couldn't run a bath FACT!!!!
Apart from needing to go to Specsavers the WSR can do without your support.
I was a station/museum S&D volunteer at Washford Station for a number of years, I tolerated abuse, indifference and strange working conditions. Some committee members were interesting and supportive, others appeared to make life difficult. Eventually I walked.
I went back to Washford when the WSR reclaimed the building, more to help get the station on its feet. Unfortunately, ill health has forced me to take a back seat for now.
Disgraceful what has happened at Washford. It now looks like Barry scrap yard
Dai Woodham had mowed lawns in Barry? I do not recall that. The current small number of volunteers had nothing to do with situation at Washford, we intend to move on.
@@applecounty move on to bankruptcy! I see you’ve had to hire my locomotive 2807 to bring in the crowds. Still at least you have Thomas the Tank to bring in the cash
@@vernongoodey5096 ...and a useful loco it will prove to be when it arrives. The 'really useful' little blue engine does not appear on our railway, I believe the Mid-Hants has one though. We do have some troublesome trucks.
@@applecounty no WSR is a good place first time I went there will never forget as it was the day of the Chernobyl disaster! Used to always visit Stogumber. But as a traditionalist and worked for Westinghouse for 19 odd years still not sure about what the idea was with 9351. I’m a life member at Didcot but the locos they rebuild etc are at least GWR designs Saint, County etc
It wont soon when it gets its new use u.der way
