- Volunteer firefighter Patrick Hardison, 41, of Senatobia, MS, was injured in September 2001 when the roof of a burning home collapsed on him during a rescue search. The accident left him with disfiguring burns across his entire face, head, neck, and upper torso.
After enduring more than 70 surgeries in Mississippi and elsewhere, Patrick was brought to the attention of Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez, the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and chair of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone.
On the morning of August 15, 2015, a team of more than 100 physicians, nurses, technical staff, and support staff, led by Dr. Rodriguez, completed a 26-hour surgery for Patrick's face transplant, the most extensive face transplant to date and the first in New York State.

this is kind of funny to me in a way i guess ready this comment since im spending my last two years of highschool learning to be a firefighter, but one thing about the job, you have to be crazy to do it

Wow the operation looks amazing. I saw the story on the women in France and now this man. He looks wonderful. The doctors did a great job and this man will now be able to have a better quality of life. I am very happy for him and his family. I cannot believe how great he looks and he has hair too. Looking straight on you cannot tell he had an operation. A great deal of thanks would have to be given to the donor family too. That took a lot of courage. I would like to see a follow up in a year to see how he is doing.

The doctors expect him to gain full use of his face so he can talk and everything within about a year. Great prognosis!

He has regained a lot of muscle control! He can talk, albeit with a strong impediment, but coherently. He can blink, twitch his eyebrows, do lots of things!! Isn't it amazing?!

My gosh! What an amazing blessing for this dedicated firefighter and servant from my home state of Mississippi and not far from my own Alma Mater whose t-shirt he's wearing towards the end. That mattered not as he could represent any school in the world for that matter. He survived all the trauma physically and mentally. As a fellow organ transplant recipient I can understand the feelings of joy. Yeah, I shed a few tears watching and listening to this.

What is very strange to is hearing Pat's voice as if nothing had happened. I've seen other people who have suffered severe facial injuries and they can't speak normally or maybe at all (case being Dallas Wiens or Underwood). It makes me see Pat's case from a different persepective.

The thing that would suck most would be knowing that every time he found hair in his food there would always be 100% chance that it was someone elses hair and not his own. Still, amazing results even with that slight inconvenience.
