Thanks! This'll help with my school project. One note, when you use the sandpaper to "grind" the wire, that's called stripping the wire, and you can use ordinary scissors for that, or the special tool for stripping wires.
I'm glad you enjoyed! As this a copper coded wire, scissors might work but I don't believe wire stripper would be very effective. Good luck on the project!
You can't build a receiver for this, electromagnet is the receiver here, it makes the the sound. There is no AM receiver for this, but you could use a microphone and build a receiver for microphone which is picking up the sound
this doesn't transmit anything,it is just a system used to open and close a circuit, but it doesn't do that,it's basically just an electromagnet attracting a paperclip, quite useless,i guess you can communicate from one room to another if you had long enough wires, but this thing has no way to distinguish between a dit and a dah,the two types of signals used to transmit morse code,so again, useless.
This telegram sounder is missing a critical element. A telegraph sounder makes a click sound when it is engaged and a clack sound when it is released. For a dit the time between the click and clack is short, and for a dah the time between the click and clack is about 3 times longer. Without the 'clack' part it is not possible to distinguish between a dit and dah. For example, how would you tell the difference between the letter 'e' (dit), and the letter 't' (dah). To fix this design, there should be something above the nail that the paperclip hits when you release the key and the sounder paperclip returns to its resting position. It needs to make a slightly different sound than the 'click'.
This isnt a telegraph though, this is just a electro magnet. For it to be a telegraph ot would need to create a spark gap. Please correct me if wrong but i think there may be some confusion into what's being made here. Cool video though
Here, the clicker wouldn`t jump back. Ich tried by attaching it to a thin thread, the clicker had to move sideways and slightly upwards, so gravity should have provided enough force to detach it after the electromagnetic field broke down - still didn`t work. Problem was: the nail had become permanently magnetized. Holding it over a candle didn`t help... still, the video gives one the idea of how it should work. Thanks :o)
I modified this so it would fit in a small tin of a certain mint and it was awesome I also made it wireless so me and my sister could use it at a play ground.
wireless?that's actually really hard to make,it took me nearly a month to make a telegraph that makes good RF signals, and even more to make a reciever, which was an electric bell that would use a small jar filled with iron shavings, which would let current flow if it would detect a frequency,it also has very limited range,i could get 100m if i'm lucky...
Hey thanks for the video but mine doesn't do the sound but it magnets, what do you think is the problem? Thank you Edit:Where is the sound coming from, from the paper clip or the magnet?
The copper wire wrapped around the iron screw works as a magnet, only when electricity runs through it, the sound is made when the copper coil attracts the paper clip and the two collide (But this design doesn't work off of sound as there are only 'dits' and no 'dahs' ('.' and '-' respectively) it works off of looking if the paper clip is attracted or not. Hopefully this answered your question.
@@WhatStuff i use a 13.5 battery, which can, using a transformer, produce arcs of up to 3 cm in the spark gap, although my setup is different than this,it is still quite similar to this one.

It works for me but the paper clip that is supposed o hit the electromagnet just sticks to it and doesn’t come off so it makes one sound nothing else why?
he uses enameled copper wire, you can use other metals such as brass,aluminum...etc. all the wire has to be enameled or else it will behave just like a tube not a wire.
If you are talking about the reciever, no, you must use copper wire, when it wrapped around a magnetic object and with electricity running through it- it helps it become a magnet, attracting the paper clip above it. Basically, you need that copper wire. You cannot replace the copper wire with the blue wire.
For learning primitive communication skills. It might allow someone to communicate secretly with another using Morse code which is nearly a lost skill.

T Delano you can use copper wire. Make sure the ends are striped so the silver is showing. I have also noticed when the base of the paperclip is to far away from the nail in the foam it wont work. try adusting the paper clip. Let me know. if that wont work i will send some more trouble shooting.
we are using a pure copper wire, 24g, and can't seem to get any silver to show through. Also, we have everything set in a 2x4 because I didn't have any foam board.
T Delano if the clicker is too far from the nail it will wiggle but it will not click. If its too close, it will just stick. Also make sure the second paperclip which is your key (switch) is completely connected. also if you dont use enough wire around the nail it might not work. it's crazy how scientists took so long to make a telegraph and nowadays you can make it in less than 10 min
