What awesome quality of sending. It isn't just the quality of the key but the skill of the
sender. Not telling anyone something we all hear. Beauty to the ear.

My Grandfather was a Chief Radio Operation on a sub during WWII. He is gone now, but even up until he was in his 80's, he could translate Morse Code, (not machine generated of course) just like a translator could translate the spoken word. I tried learning code years ago but couldn't get past 5 WPM. I am again trying it and learning it better than I did back when I was younger. I have a straight key, paddle and yes, in honor of my Grandfather, I found a vintage, and in very good condition a J-38 Key as well. I practice using all of them.

Look at joining the Long Island CW Club. They have all kinds of classes to learn cw and increase speed on ZOOM. It is FANTASTIC! You will not be disappointed! They even have classes to get one licensed from technician clear through extra class if desired. It is self paced so absolutely no pressure. You will not find a more supportive group of men and women. They even have course tailored for kids. Check it out. 73 KC0FDG

I can understand one thing every time. CQ, I can't understand C or Q but CQ is like hearing my own name in english. CW would be a lot of fun because I like to do things without voice. I run digital, but only FT-8 right now. I want to do more QSO type stuff but I haven't learned that yet. I'm going to today.

Morse code is not something manual, it becomes something of a language when you learn it, it'll be as automatic as riding a bicycle.

Hi, how are things? Bit of an odd question - do you know what I'd need to do to make a telegraph key compatible with a (eurorack modular) synthesizer? They have 3.5mm jack inputs, oscillators, etc. Just trying to figure out what I need to do to trigger a signal using an older model telegraph key like the one in your video (which is gorgeous, by the way! Fair play!)

Your radio will have a side tone when you operate the key, it is not transmitting what you are sending, you have to key the transmitter to transmit

How huge was the margin of error communicating this way?
    For instance I heard --.- .-. .-.. ..--.. = qrl?
    But -- .- .-. .-.. ..--.. would mean marl?
when I saw the other video where that guy was typing twice the speed I wonder how anyone could have followed him.

For me sending it is not as hard as trying to copy it. Sending it you are spelling out the word along the way. copying code especially from another straight key and beyond your familiar speed... I don't know. I can copy letters at 5wpm from W1AW, I'm completely lost at 13wpm regardless of where it came from. I can send at 13wpm as far as practicing goes, just can't copy, I use a retired cellphone with an onboard app and dial the RIT on the radio until the phone can decode it. I use the same program to decode W1AW at 13wpm, lock the speed in, then use it to proof myself. I'll grab a random piece of junk mail and just key away.
I'm not using the key right, I don't know what it is, I can't key over half an hour without something cramping.
I copied OE5FBL Karl. I'd like to work Austria too some day. So far my only DX contact is V31AX in Belize, but that's 10W on 40m SSB. Have yet to make my first CW contact.

Sending is far easier. Back when code was required for an amateur radio license, they never bothered testing if you could send. You just had to pass the receiving test. They assumed you could send.
