Hi Jasmine! I recently found ur videos and i really like them! I want to learn Japanese, and Korean but I don't want to overwhelm myself with learning 2 languages that I know nothing of. I'm also 12 years old so I think it would be best to learn one language since I will eventually go back to school after summer vacation! Which language out of the 2 would be best to learn, or which is easier?
I just graduated from SOAS, I studied Japanese! Watching your Vlogs is really nostalgic :D
How was the course? Did the university focus more on oral speaking or writing? Was there a huge emphasise on learning kanji or learning hiragana and Katakana? Did you take a year abroad as part of your course? You don’t have to answer all these questions.
I’m also thinking of applying to SOAS as well in year 13. 😊😊😊

ive only been studying japanese for a month, but so far i think i find that its good to learn vocab more than kanji cuz:
- i found that if i tried to focus on a single kanji, and tried to know, besides the meaning, almost all its pronunciations, i get more confused on how i would read a vocab word
- i also noticed that for some kanjis used in, for example, n5 vocabs, its not included in n5 kanjis. so its like, knowing all n5 kanjis but then when it came to n5 vocabs, there would be some words that uses kanji that wasnt in the kanjis uve studied (hopefully that made sense hehe,,)
- if the kanji has an unusual reading in a vocab word, you wouldnt know it by only knowing the kanji
- and you would atleast immediately know how a word will sound like and what it implies without racking your brain on what sound the kanji alone in it will use and how it affects the word
of course i know its still very important to study kanji, but like what others have said, one shouldnt focus too much on kanji. and that atleast for me so far, just knowing the meaning, its most common pronunciations and maybe how its used (as well as the writing pattern) is enough for it, moreso when youre only talking about that individual kanji itself.
but that is only my opinion and once again ive only been studying seriously for a whole month so who knows if that changesᕙ (° ~͜ʖ~ °) ᕗ
and on that note, thank you for the wonderful video!! i just want to mention that you are one of my motivations for studying japanese and that i always look out for every single video(ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*.✧
