Night Ranger's drummer, Kelly Keagy, wrote this song about his sister Kristy, who is 10 years younger than him and was growing up fast. The band members thought he was saying "Sister Christian" and that became the title.
Motoring was what they used to call Cruising - driving around with friends.

Motoring meant when I was in my early 20s. They were great by the way in concert. But motoring meant like puberty. Where their ready for sex. Mama says it is a gift to give to the right guy. Great videos guys. I'm glad I found you 💕

@@ruthmeow4262 Kelly Keagy was born in 1952, his Sister was born in 1962....She would have been 20/21 when this song was recorded, and 21/22 when released. Maybe he wrote it a couple of years earlier when she was a Teenager? So we can rest assured she wasn't tortured by her classmates -- at least for this. And to add a little to the Motoring question.... Christy was one of the kids who cruised the main drag in Eugene, Oregon, the Keagys' hometown. Cruising in cars was known as motoring in some places. (for years I never knew what he was talking about)

"Motorin'" is what we use to call "Cruisin," basically just getting in a car and driving up and down a street or around a block. Back when it was really popular, you could have dozens in not a hundred or more cars involved. If you had a convertible, you would leave the top down or the doors unlocked, and people would just jump in and out of different cars, the speed was always very slow. It was considered a popular teenage activity and a way to meet people or hang out with friends.
I heard a story about how the song was written. Kelly Keagy, the band's drummer had finally gone home after spending a couple of years on the road and not seeing his family. He had a younger sister that he was protective of and when he saw her, he realized his "little sister" wasn't so little anymore, and the boys were coming around. He knew he could not be there for her and her birthday was coming up, so he wrote this song as both a birthday present and an apology for not being there.

Night Ranger's drummer, Kelly Keagy, wrote this song about his sister Kristy (this is the correct spelling, he tells us), who is 10 years younger than him and was growing up fast. "It's the big brother looking after his little sister when she's growing up - a simple, almost naïve kind of lyric," he said in a Songfacts interview. What if he was talking to all of the good "Christian" girls saving themselves for their husband? .... Then again, what if the song writer didn't mean that when he wrote it, but that's what thousands of fans thought the writer meant? THAT's what is important! Nice reaction, great band- Don't Tell Me You Love Me, Sentimental Street, Good Bye, When You Close Your Eyes, You Can Still Rock in America are all great songs. Jack Blades was in the group Damn Yankees you just covered. They have such good guitarists, Brad Gillis played with Ozzy for awhile and he was in Hearing Aid, a metal artist version of We Are the World.

i always interpreted "motoring" as spinning your wheels, not making progress, not knowing what you want to do with your life --- a song about a girl fresh out of high school, trying to find her place in the world, but not knowing which direction to take.

    Brad! Brad! Brad! Woohoo!
    You got it!!! Finally!!! Yes!!!
What you are describing with the word "motorin'" being catchy is called a hook. It's something... anything...in a song that sticks in your head, makes you remember it and most of all ..makes the song good. AC/DC songs are all FULL of hooks. Angus' riffs and Brian's lyrics

Lead singer and bassist Jack Blades revealed who inspired his bandmate Kelly Keagy’s lyrics.
“Kelly’s sister’s name is Christy and so he was writing a song about his little sister growing up in a small town in Oregon and cruising up and down the street on a Friday, Saturday night, you know, motoring, everything like that, but it was sister Christy. He’s singing ‘sister Christy oh the,’ and we all thought it was Christian.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU! So many folks seem to not understand that song lyrics don’t always have to be taken literally. That chorus is waaaay more about how it makes you FEEL than what the words actually mean

Great vid. The original title was "Sister Kristy," but the rest of the band thought Keagy was singing "Sister Christian," so that became the title. Keagy grew up in Eugene, Oregon, where "Motoring" was a term for driving around with your friends, often trying to pick up girls. If you like Night Ranger, you should listen to 'You can Still Rock in America'.

Lex's instinct is right. Singer has said the song is inspired by seeing his little sister Chrissy growing up and getting to that next stage in her life. Driving, getting serious with boys, etc. It's really so heartfelt and touching.

The song is about Keagy's little sister, Christy. Keagy wrote the song at his apartment, near Divisadero and California streets in San Francisco, after he had just returned from a visit to his hometown of Eugene, Oregon. He had been struck at how fast his teenaged sister, 10 years younger than he was, was growing up.[9]
"After we started playing it a lot, Jack turned to me and said, 'What exactly are you saying?'" Keagy recalled. "He thought the words were Sister Christian, instead of Sister Christy, so it just stuck."
