🐶🐶 WOOF WOOF! NEW VIDEO! 🚨🚨 I've been on UA-cam for nearly 3 years and haven't reviewed a single X-Men book... UNTIL TODAY! And what better to start with than my introduction into the Mutant side of the Marvel Universe, but Whedon's take on the team has fallen out of favour lately, so how does The Astonishing X-Men hold up today? 📚 . I disagree that Cyclops wasn't used well later on. He brought the entire team out of their hallucination-induced stupor during the Hellfire Club arc, and he demonstrated both his tactical genius and heroic potential on the Breakworld by letting himself be captured and using it to his advantage.
I always loved how Emma and Kitty both debuted at the beginning of the Dark Phoenix Saga, their story was entwined from the beginning. Solid call back to have them as focal points of this new start. Also, this was easily my favorite Cyclops story…so amazing…so astonishing…
It’s one of the only X-Men books I’ve kept in my collection because of how easy to jump into it is not to mention consistent art throughout. Say what you will about Whedon but you can’t deny he’s one good writer. Nice to see you highlight this run it’s a good follow from grant Morrisons new x-men or a standalone in itself one of my favourites from the mutants
@MaddoggComics thanks, I have Wolverine by Daniel Way the complete collection Vol 1 - 4 & The Astonishing X-Men Vol 1 - 4 (Gifted, Dangerous, Torn, Unstoppable) which I have read more than a couple of times.
There's a Blu Ray of the entire Josh Whedon run of Astonishing X-men Motion Comic. The writing, the humor, the artwork, such an amazing run on an X-men comic.
Same here, sometimes people seem to forget you can enjoy more than one run haha! Gonna revisit New X-Men later this year, so will be fun to see how it compares now. Thanks for watching the video mate!
I just finished reading the Astonishing X-Men Modern Era Epic Collection Volume 1 and I couldn't put it down it was so good and so refreshing. I can't wait for them to release a volume 2 epic collection so I can keep my collection growing with fantastic stories etc.
Been thinking a lot about X-Men lately, I was going to stop after Claremont left. Then changed my mind going to go up to Onslaught. But I have been wondering what other post Onslaught/pre Bendis I should pick up. So really appreciate you reviewing this run.
Claremont era through Onslaught is my favorite X-Men as well and really the only truly notable X comic books. I've read a lot of other stuff and my favorites are Mark Millar Ultimate X-Men, Whedon and Ellis Astonishing, Age of X (NOT age of X-Man which is awful) and Grant Morrison New X-Men (although his run has possibly some of the biggest and stupidest plot holes I have seen, and introduces a bunch of weak, useless X people who should really be Morlocks.)
Thanks for the great review. No backlash here - I can mostly, and I say mostly, separate creators’ work from their subsequently emerging back stories. I might just disagree with the low score though! I left Marvel comics in about 1989 and picked up the trades of this run about 5 years ago to see what had been happening since. It brought me back and started my Omni collecting hobby. I thought Cassady’s art was amazing - a world apart from the “flat”pictures of the Bronze Age I had last seen. It elevated the story which seems to carry genuine importance and weight. Loved the character designs, the “sets” and the cinematic dynamism. Obviously have got the Omni since and cannot wait for a re-read. In a way it’s cost me an absolute fortune but I’m back with a hobby I love. Have always wondered though - what’s the post-Whedon/Cassady run like?
everyone claims Cyclops is the leader but got no love in the FOX films, but in many comics it seems like they also often bury him to often for him being the leader of the group (or one of the groups) and I'd like to watch and follow a comic event were he is clearly the leader for most of it.
I love astonishing, joss wanted to create a book that was in its own world allowed people to just read and not worry about what was going on in X-men blue X-men red uncanny xmen, exceptional xmen, all new xmen etc. whenever someone asks me to recommend a jumping in, I always recommend the first 4 volumes of this.
Astonishing X-Men brought me back into reading the X-Men again, not New X-Men. The mix of humor incorporated into the art, story line, and Kitty taking badass stage was fulfilling. Damn shame about Whedon, but the story was well done.
A friend recommended this run to me and having just finished it, I have no idea what he or others see in this. The characterization is often cirrus-thin and the plot is absurd.
“Decades ago…”. Crap, I’m old. My only nitpick with this run is how Emma Frost is drawn, like unattractive when Byrne’s version is so malevolently hot.
It was never great. It was good (which, unfortunately puts it in a pretty high tier of X-Men outside the Claremont era. As far as post 2000 X-Men I have 1) Mark Millar Ultimate 2) Whedon and Ellis Astonishing 3) Grant Morrison New X-Men in that order.)

Cyclops has maybe the best "to me, my x-men" ever in breakworld
You're completely correct, this book is what made Cyclops my favorite comic character.
I always loved how Emma and Kitty both debuted at the beginning of the Dark Phoenix Saga, their story was entwined from the beginning. Solid call back to have them as focal points of this new start. Also, this was easily my favorite Cyclops story…so amazing…so astonishing…
R.I.P. John Casseday 😢
His artwork gives the writing life. Rest in peace.
This was the first series I ever got into and will probably always be my favourite. It’s one I can re-read each year and still enjoy.
Just finished the first book, loved it!
It’s one of the only X-Men books I’ve kept in my collection because of how easy to jump into it is not to mention consistent art throughout.

I'm a DC guy for life. But I bought this and my goodness. Top 10 comic runs right now. I LOVE the character work in this run.
This,New Xmen and Hox/Pox are top tier X books!
This and Daniel Way's Wolverine is what got me back into comics.
Way's Wolverine gets waaaaay too much hate, so I'm glad to see a fellow fan! Hope you enjoyed the video!

Everyone seems to love the Morrison run, but this was the better version.

Just got myself a new a copy of it. I loved it a lot!

Story was so good.
So happy we are finally getting some Marvel Legends based on this Astonishing team.

How is this only 85%!? This is a 10/10! Modern classic!
Reading for the first time. At it’s really GOOD. Illustrations make you feel the characters emotions.
I really enjoyed this run, some great art and love Danger. Great vid 👍

Watching the show n it's great

John Cassaday was the hottest new artist after the crash thanks to Planetary.
This is one of those series I loved the art but the actual story I found kind of meh it was ok but not for me.
A friend recommended this run to me and having just finished it, I have no idea what he or others see in this. The characterization is often cirrus-thin and the plot is absurd.
Storywise the X-men were dragged through a lot of struggles during this time, but it were excellent stories up to AvX even
Too bad the omnibus isn't available...
Did you ever watch the cartoon movies?
“Decades ago…”. Crap, I’m old. My only nitpick with this run is how Emma Frost is drawn, like unattractive when Byrne’s version is so malevolently hot.
It is well worth reading, but does seem like Claremont fanfic at points.
❤❤❤❤

Brubaker, fraction and Carey have great runs too
